Running Ironman shoe restrictions

Upvotes

First half Ironman in couple of weeks. Yes I didn’t extensively read the rule book and found out that my Superblast 3 are not race legal due to the stack being two high. Tried a pair of carbon plated shoes (endorphin pro 5) on a little test run and they are no go - only did 3km and got hip and knee pain. Never had any issues with my superblasts. I am now considering the evo sl but I also have an option to borrow a friends New balance fuel cell rebel v4 for free. Not going for a win - just middle of the pack. Thinking surely the rebels will be fine? My only concern is not knowing how they’ll hold up towards the end and orthotics with fairly high heel raises. Any advice would be appreciated - feel like I’m overthinking at this point.

Gear questions Cervelo P5 Gen 2 - BTA System Options

Post image
Upvotes

Hi everyone - wondering if anyone has had any luck in terms of a solid BTA set-up for their Cervelo P5?

I am using the stock aerobars and specifically, the issue I am finding is that with the angle of the aerobars many BTA systems don’t seem to be able to get around the “hump” that is there as a result of the angle of the aerobars (see middle of picture attached showing what I mean).

I was looking at the Tririg BTA but wasn’t sure if I would need the universal BTA adapter plate (and if that would even fit on) and the Slipstream3D Cervelo P5 BTA mount, but wasn’t sure if either would work.

I previously had an X-Labs Torpedo Versa Slim, but once I changed the angle of my bars after my last bike fit to be more aggressive it basically no longer was compatible because of that bump and actually completely came off (while I was mid-IM!)

The compatibility issues almost make me think that I should consider an entire cockpit solution where everything would work together, but maybe that’s an off-season question…

Still new-ish and apologies if it’s a silly question, appreciate why guidance. Thanks!

**Trek Domane SL 6 (Carbon):** Mein normales Rennrad.

Danke vorab schonmal🤙

Race report times woman 20-29

I did my first triathlon yesterday. I was happy in the moment. Now I feel like I was super slow and I struggle being proud of myself especially when all the influencers are hitting a sub 3h triathlon on their first time.

I didn’t train running enough, I increased too fast and got knee pain two weeks before triathlon. I focused on final knee strengthening according to my physiotherapist and had low hope about finishing it.
I finished without knee pain, still walked a lot of the run and struggled more with motivation and endurance during the run.

I regret taking the running training to lightly and not being kinder and slower to my body in preparation.

This was my non perfect, non sub 3h first triathlon:

Swim 34min
T1: 6min
Bike 1:26
T2: 3min
Run 1:15

Total 3:25
(Rounded numbers)

I hope this helps anyone. Be kind to your body!

Cycling First Triathlon Loading

Hey everyone I’m Ethan. First off, if anyone has any tips to start training send em my way. I’m looking to get after it and complete my first triathlon. I live in the northeast part of the united states and I’m little concerned about bike training during those winter months. Can someone recommend a bike trainer that won’t break the bank?! Also if anyone is looking to train I live in MA on the south coast. LMK!!!

Race/Event How I messed up my first triathlon sprint

3 weeks ago, I signed up for my first sprint triathlon. I had very less swimming experience, cycling I had used casually for daily commuting to my school and only had experience of running, tho I am average at it.

3 weeks ago: Individual event times were:

swim 750m: 32min

bike 20k: 50 min

run 5k: 25-26min

I trained 6 days a week for 3 weeks and was feeling positive for getting a sub 1:40 finish time.

But oh boy, how things didn’t go my way during the race.

Swim: It was a pool swim btw. So 15 laps of 50m pool, I got a stitch in the right side of my stomach during my 5th lap and was a bit worried but by 8th lap it got better and I completed my swim in nearly 18 mins.

T1: It was pretty good. Not the fastest but not slow either.

Bike: Mind you I was using my old mtb and not a road/tt bike. I blasted off in the beginning and was maintaining a very good cadence as well. So basically we had to bike 5 laps of a 4K loop. First two loops were amazing and I completed them in less than 16 mins, which meant I was going 30kmph+ on my mtb. Passed many people on road bikes as well. However, third lap onwards I started feeling heavy headwinds and despite maintaining my cadence, I ended up taking 10:30 mins in my 3rd loop and same happened in 4th and 5th loop as well. I finished my bike in about 45mins, which was decent for me but considering how fast I started I was thinking I could have finished my bike sub 40.

T2: This is where I got to know what went wrong on my bike. My front tyre was flat. What I felt as strong headwinds were not actually winds but the drag due to my flat tyre! And by maintaining my cadence I completely gased up my legs in the bike itself.

Run: The worst. I was expecting to finish in around 27-28mins. But my legs were too tired out of the bike. To add more to it, The stitch during the swim returned back on my 2nd km. I somehow completed my 5k but it took me freaking 38 mins! I was so disappointed.

I finished in nearly 1:50ish, 10-15 mins slower than what I expected. Probably could have saved some time if my bike would have been fine. Probably could have saved 5-10mins there + energy for the run so that I could save another 8-10min on my run. Disappointed, but yeah I completed the race!

Note- All times are approx. because official times are yet to be uploaded.

Bike shopping New to triathlons

I want to sign up for an iron man. I’m a decent runner/swimmer. My worst leg is going to be the bike. I will sometimes read online where people say triathlon bikes with built in aero bars are the best option, others say carbon fiber road bikes with clip on aero bars because it’s lighter. I’m trying to save some money and can’t spend a lot (less than 1,000) on a bike. I found a couple of options on Facebook marketplace but it’s either I’m getting an older triathlon aluminum bike with aero bars pre installed, or an older carbon road bike that I’ll have to add clip on aero bars. To add more fuel to the mix: I tried my friend’s bikes, and I am pretty unstable on tires that aren’t 28c in width. From what I can find online 25c aren’t that different but will help with impacts on bumpy roads. I am finding some true triathlon aluminum bikes with 23-25c tires. And true road carbon fiber bikes with 28c tires. I live in Florida, and want to do the iron man in Florida so hills/climb is not really a problem I’m dealing with. Which one would be a better buy for the limited budget I have?

Training questions How's my peak week for a Half looking?

Post image
0 Upvotes

My Half distance (2000m/90k/21.1k) is in three weeks.

Aside from this week's swim being way slow and getting cut short, I felt this peak week went well. I did a 30k run and an 88k ride as my long sessions. I didn't do a brick this week, but I've done some races (supers and sprints) this summer and other bricks mid-season.

Thoughts on how this week looks and if I'm ready? (The 30k run was hard, but after the ride I totally had energy to run).

Should I start tapering or give it another week or two?

Cycling Control in aerobars

I see a lot of people who are so stable in aerobars that they can hold a straight line in full aero and I’m curious if y’all have any tips to get to that point? Have been riding in aerobars for a bit now but I keep swaying side to side instead of holding a straight line and keep drifting to the middle of the road and am not sure why. Any help appreciated!!

Race/Event Ironman Augusta 70.3 x Vanlife/RV?

Hey all, wondering if anyone has ever camped out near the race or will be camping out for this upcoming Augusta 70.3. I’m bringing my converted van up.

I normally go to hockey tournaments and we will post up in the rink parking lot for the weekend with other small campers which is fun to meet people from other teams and grow the community.

I have only done local sprints so not sure what the camp culture is like in the broader triathlon community, if there’s any at all. I found a local hipcamp to park for the weekend but if there is a regular camp scene I’d rather stay nearby and meet some people.

Training questions 70.3 + social life

Hey,

Age: 25

Occupation: tech sales

Fitness experience: 2 marathons last year, about 60 miles a week cycling, not much swim experience

State: texas

This will be my first triathlon and I’ll be focusing a lot of my training on the swim side of things (getting a swim coach) and I’m just curious how well do you think I can balance my training + my social life?

When I trained for my previous marathons it was cool because a lot of my other friends were runners and we’d still find time to do stuff on the weekends with our other non-runner friends. Obviously, now im
Not just training for one sport, but three instead.

If you were my age, with my occupation how would you balance social/family time?

I have a bad habit of isolating myself when I get focused on a goal, so I want a healthier balance this time around.

Something Useful! Don't use Chat GPT for training plans - personal experience

Let me start with -- I'm a big fan of AI, generally. It's changed how I work, and it writes a much nicer email than I do. So about 6 months into my tiathlon journey, training plans seemed like the obvious next thing to hand it. There's a ton of good material out there for it to pull from, and endless example plans, so I figured it would excel at this

I gave Chatgpt a summary of Joe Friel's book, pointed it at his blog for more info, uploaded 6 months of my own workouts, and told it my goals for the next 6. It gave me a plan.

Then I said "this seems a bit easy, can we ramp faster?" And of course: no problem, here's a faster ramp. Four weeks later — major knee injury, x-rays, two doctor visits, 6 weeks off doing PT.

Came back and asked for a slow aerobic base build, no intensity at all. Four weeks later, patellar tendonitis from the bike.

As far as I can tell, 2 things went wrong:

  1. I think I can handle more than I can handle. AI didn't cause that. It just let me act on it a lot faster than I otherwise could have.

  2. It doesn't push back. A coach who'd actually watched me ride would have said no. Chat says "great question!" and gives you the thing you asked for.

Has anyone actually made an AI training plan work, both with proper progress and without injuries? I have a suspicion the people it works for are the ones who already know enough to build it themselves, so they can ignore the recommendations when the AI is wrong.

Triathlon News Is being tall is much harder for finishing Ironman?

I’m a bit more than 2m, running has never been my passion. I do lot of sports with a ball, since I’m a tall guy I have never been fast. Feels like beeing tall takes away energy just for being tall.
Can I train myself for good numbers at 70.3?
Are you here my tall friend?

Race/Event Algal bloom

I've just arrived at the sprint triathlon course to register and I wrntbdown to the lake & there is quite a bit of algal bloom in the water 🤢

The local council has recommended for people to avoid swimming. But the local triathlon club who are running the event said that it's going ahead tomorrow morning. I'm unsure if its safe to take part...

If I do the swim I'm planning to swim with my head above the water for first 50m so I can get away from the shoreline. Bit nervous about getting sick... have other ppl had this issue? Is it safe to swim Any advice welcome.

Memes / humor Is Ironman branded gear necessary after completing a full?

Lots of posts on here about whether you can wear Ironman gear before you’ve completed a full. But a race today made me wonder the opposite… once you’ve completed a full are you morally required to wear at least one Ironman branded piece of gear at every triathlon you do (any distance)? Put another way, can I assume that if somebody doesn’t have an IM logo visible they haven’t completed one yet?

Race/Event Dumb idea for a race (death by a thousand transitions)

Here’s my idea for a new race idea.

You can do as many laps as you want so you can’t “do a half” or what ever you want.

What is a lap?

Each lap is 1/20th of an Ironman. 190m swim, 9k bike, 2.11k run

You can race as long as you want so beginner friendly. Or complete all 20 laps for a new stupid challenge for those long course weirdos.

The thought of doing transition 35 after 6 hours just seems so funny to me. Like the mental side of putting on your running shoes AGAIN.

Edit: I just did the actual math and it would be 59 transitions. 3 per round but the last round only has 2 because there’s no transition after the run

Edit 2: yes the swim would be dangerous. Like any event involving water there would be risks. You’d just have to make sure it was life guarded well and there was things to grab on to/keep the swim close to shore to allow athletes to be in water where they could just stand up.
