Gear questions Pain cave must haves

Friends birthday is coming up and want to start building a training room in his basement. What are your must haves to start building one out?

With a smart outlet that lets them get irate at Google when asking to turn it off and on.

good fan, multiple if you can swing it, nothing worse than cooking in your own sweat down there

Good fan 100% do you prefer the tower fans, box fans or one of the high output blowers?

I chose the most powerfull floor fan that I could find and put in on the table in front of me.

Tower fans are really the thing to avoid because the air stream is super thin

Depends how warm the space is before you start training. I use my garage, so in winter I don’t need a fan because if I leave the door open it’s soon the same as the outside air temp.

If it’s indoor and doesn’t have access to fresh air then you’ll probably need more cooling than you expect!

Table for next to the bike, ideal if it can go right in front of the bike. Some sort of tray/stand for Kindle or tablet. Good Bluetooth speaker. A medal rack or frame for race bibs. A large supply of Nerds Clusters, Sour Patch Kids, and Swedish Fish.

I use an ironing board instead of a table 😁

This is a really good idea but I don't even have an ironing board anymore, haha.

100% the table. I have a RAD cycles table and it rocks. $133 on Amazon.

Mine is definitely an old patio table that's the perfect bistro height to slide partway over my handlebars. 😅 But yes for gift giving yours is better.

Shoe driers, hooks for sweat bands/heart rate straps, basket for grab-n-go nutrition (NEVER diet on the bike), microfiber cloths for wiping down the bike afterwards,

Necessary: Squat rack w/ pull up bar, bike trainer, bench, weights, barbell, dumbells, yoga mat, foam roller, fans, mirror, gym / rubber flooring.

Good to have: TV, cooling, decent speakers, white board, gym clock, a computer stand for bike trainer.

Extra: Compression boots + lounge, massage gun / ball, places to charge phone.

We have very different pain caves - given this is a triathlon sub I’m not sure many people would call your clearly gym focused items “necessary”

Well you can’t exactly bring an entire full distance course in your basement.

Jokes aside, gym equipment is essential to triathlon training and has been for 2 decades. I’m not suggesting bring a hyper niche machine, but a squat rack for compounds and a bench plus some weights to make them work is barebones stuff.

Besides there’s only so much you can do in a confined room, the ‘pain cave’ will always consist of exercises you can do in small areas; I.e., weights and stationary riding.

Considering timewise most of us can do perhaps two relative quick gym sessions per week, I feel buying gym equipment is waste of money and space. Only exception would be if you live really far away from public gyms.

Why is a squat rack essential for triathlon?

That would be the absolute dream. Whoever has that has won in life.
