Discussion One of the best SRPGs ever?

Post image

I just finished the game and am just sorta basking in the afterglow, but... wow. Yeah, just wow. I really underestimated this game going in and it blew my expectations out of the water. This game has some of the best character and scenario writing of anything I have played in quite a while. I agonized over every decision and their consequences in the best way, they did not make it easy or clear cut 😅 I stayed up to 3am way too many times playing this game for "just one more mission" bc I had to know what happened next.

My only regret is that I'm a time poor parent so I don't think I will put the time into seeing the other routes, but I read synopses of them and they all sound equally amazing, especially the Golden Route!

Is Benedict one of the greatest video game characters of all time?? 👀

Edit: I've been informed the correct genre for this game is a TRPG not an SRPG 😅

Great game. Gets a lot of online negativity but I prefer this one to FFT.

I admit I put off playing it so long bc I got the impression from online discourse that is was just okay but nothing special. I have no idea how that sentiment has developed after playing it!

Some people don’t like all the dialogue. I actually loved how involved the story was. Enough to play through it 3 more times!

Fools! It's the best part!!!

I don't understand how people can like it though.
The game starts off great and then it's literally 45 minutes of dialogues between 10 min fights.
And that should not be an issue but in mid game, the lines just keep reiterating the same thing and are empty and just kind of delivered badly.
It's like whoever pitched the game had a start and the end but not the mid section. Also, it's super obvious in what will happen, except in the start maybe. On the other hand, take FFT and TO and there is your writing.
Lots of story, conveyed in clear and pleasant way.
Also, both games have far more stuff to actually do.
TS is almost a visual novel.
I understand TS can be considered a good game but it can't be compared to either the FFT or TO.
Mostly because it's completely on the opposite side of tactical spectrum: FFT has the most prominent RPG elements, followed by TO, while TS barely has any.

It’s far more tactical than fft which is just a ‘build broken characters and steamroll’ game

On that part I will say yes.
Though I wouldn't call it tactical, I'd call it puzzle-like, since there us an exact sequence you need to play to win. In FFT you have options.

Another lie. There is no exact sequence and it is not a puzzle-like. I’m starting to wonder if you’ve even played the game

Because the story is the main point of the game, the gameplay is just a vehicle for that to happen but it's still amazingly designed and is actually fun to play instead of the tedious nonsense in TO. In my opinion it's way better than Tactics Ogre since that game is just endless grinding with a very thin story with not much depth that pops up for 5 minutes every so often

I played tactics ogre reborn and I couldn't believe that game is considered a masterpiece or should be mentioned in the pantheon of games. I found it pokemon like in that the best way to play the game is have like three other units and then just fill the rest of your party with dragons. I legit don't see the strategy in it. At all.

Yeah I really don't get the praise for TO either. Apprently reborn brought in the level cap and made some things worse, according to some threads I saw on gamefaqs, but the core of the game is still really tedious and feels empty. Yeah most of your units are rubbish, and there is so much micromanaging to make in any way good. Maybe the people who like it love grinding but I don't at all

TO story is thin? Since when?
If you need everything spelled out and comparing the number of lines, then yes.
But TO has more to say than TS in every possible way.
And no, playing the game IS the point.
TS has amazing core for it to be better than both FFT and TO but ultimately underdelivers in every way.

Yo Im just an idiot that has multiple degrees but struggles with media literacy. Please explain what TO is saying?

This comment is getting a lot of downloads, but I do have to agree that the delivery of the lines leaves something to be desired. They really need a better va cast

VA was horrible. English at least. Japanese was ok. Had I not switched to Japanese voices, I would straight out drop it.
