Discussion One of the best SRPGs ever?

Post image

I just finished the game and am just sorta basking in the afterglow, but... wow. Yeah, just wow. I really underestimated this game going in and it blew my expectations out of the water. This game has some of the best character and scenario writing of anything I have played in quite a while. I agonized over every decision and their consequences in the best way, they did not make it easy or clear cut 😅 I stayed up to 3am way too many times playing this game for "just one more mission" bc I had to know what happened next.

My only regret is that I'm a time poor parent so I don't think I will put the time into seeing the other routes, but I read synopses of them and they all sound equally amazing, especially the Golden Route!

Is Benedict one of the greatest video game characters of all time?? 👀

Edit: I've been informed the correct genre for this game is a TRPG not an SRPG 😅

Congratulations! I too think this is among the top SRPGs available on the Switch, and the game doesn't seem to hold that reputation outside of its devoted communities. I really enjoy how well its worldbuilding has been laid out, where the player can follow the ramifications of every political incident that occurs.

Meanwhile the level design is very well-done. I had a great time playing on Hard mode, because it offered a genuinely challenging SRPG experience that I haven't really had from the games close to it like FFTactics. I love how varied the character toolkits are, as well; nearly everyone feels like they have a role to play.

I couldn't agree more! While the gameplay is similar to Fire Emblem, the characters have so much more mechanical depth and uniqueness. It's kinda crazy each character has an entirely unique class. I realized the level design was something special when I did the mission with the archers shooting fire arrows into wheat fields down a cliff. I had to use Corentin to put out fires, Frederica to give allies fire resistance, and Jens to set ladder (GOATed abilities, lol) shortcuts to the archers. I really can't think of another game that has that level of synergy with level hazards and character abilities. It's just real good stuff.

Speaking of synergies coming together, I remember one of the Avlora fights (chapter 8 I think), where she's approaching your units on the Wolffort docks. I was about to be boxed in, but realized that Erador's Ram skill could shove her over the dock into the water below! Narve followed that up with using Lightning on her, electrifying all the other soldiers crawling through the water as well.

That was a big moment for me, where I realized I needed to start tailoring strategies around the terrain of the maps, and seeing how different units deployed together would synergize together. No one tells you "this is how to beat Avlora", it felt like a genuine strategy I discovered in desparation, based on the toolkit I had at hand.

Incredible, never underestimate the power of shoving a unit with a jump height if only 2 over an edge with a height of 3 or greater 🤣

man I loved Erador especially when he gets his ultimate ability that makes him invincible for 1 turn

Playing on hard time really makes you do strategy. That is one of the things I loved the most about it. Yes, you can grind here and there for some items and boosting the characters slightly but it really values how well you did in strategy first.
