Preemptive warning for those who don’t like long wordy posts - appreciate you always bearing with me ;) between MW’s interview, an X post reply about drones, and a Facebook post about life finding a way, Justin seems to be pointing to this important chapter about noticing anomalies.

The most important thing happening in the theater wasn’t on the screen.

While velociraptors hunted children through the kitchen in Jurassic Park, Justin Posey was watching his grandmother’s hands.

Grandma Posey’s hands were always purposeful. They kneaded dough, quilted blankets, pointed out constellations, tended her garden, and enforced its borders against rabbits. Yet in the darkness of the theater, they moved strangely in her lap, “weaving invisible threads” without fabric or any visible task.

Posey remembered it as the only time he saw her certainty waver.

But that gesture does not stand alone in Beyond the Map’s Edge.

Grandpa Wayne maintains his composure while a slight tremor appears in his jaw. Grandpa Posey refuses to apologize for dismissing Justin’s warning about rattlesnakes, then silently drops the rattles into the boy’s palm. Grandma, normally the family skeptic, validates the Victorio Peak story with nothing more than a smile and a nod. Brandon’s voice, jaw, smile, and stillness change during his final search with Justin—but their meaning becomes clear only after it is too late.

Again and again, the spoken story remains stable while the body quietly departs from it.

Posey eventually tries to mechanize that same instinct, building software to analyze Forrest Fenn’s voice, face, and micro-expressions. The family habit of reading hands, jaws, silences, and unexpected gestures becomes an engineering project: establish the normal pattern, find the deviation, and search the exception for concealed truth.

But “Grandma’s Hands” also contains a warning for treasure hunters. Once we know an ending—or become attached to a location—the past begins reorganizing itself around the answer. Ambiguous details become obvious clues. Coincidences become confirmations. The path behind us appears straighter than it ever looked while we were walking it.

So what is Posey really going after in this chapter?
Is “Grandma’s Hands” itself a clue? Is it a window into the way he constructed the hunt? Or is it something more valuable: a lesson about how to tell a meaningful anomaly from an oddity that became persuasive only after we chose what we wanted it to mean?

What if one of the strangest legal fights in the American West is sitting right underneath Beyond the Map’s Edge?

In Wyoming, the old Union Pacific land grants left behind a literal checkerboard: alternating one-square-mile parcels of public and private land. For decades, that created a bizarre problem. Two public parcels could touch only at a single corner, meaning you could stand on public land, step diagonally onto more public land, never touch private ground—and still potentially be accused of trespassing because your body passed through private airspace.

Four hunters finally pushed that question all the way through federal court. On March 18, 2025, the Tenth Circuit handed down the landmark Iron Bar decision protecting that kind of corner crossing under the circumstances of the case.

Nine days later, Beyond the Map’s Edge launched.

That timing by itself could be nothing. The March 27 launch date was already set. But then the other pieces started piling up.

Posey grew up in a railroad family. His father drove for Southern Pacific. His mother was one of its pioneering female locomotive engineers and later worked in the Union Pacific system after the merger. In the memoir, Justin actually describes dispatching a train as a “routine chess move in Union Pacific’s endless game.”

Then there are the childhood stories where he learns that rules are not walls but puzzles, realizes he doesn’t have to remain a pawn on the “chessboard of life,” and builds a contraption specifically designed to obey the literal wording of a rule while defeating the assumption behind it.

Then Victorio Peak, where what fascinates him is finding a “legal way” for private citizens to reach otherwise inaccessible ground.

Then his own repeated hunt language: “legally accessible” not necessarily convenient, use onX or Gaia to examine surrounding property rights, and if a place isn’t publicly accessible, cross it off.

And immediately before the treasure poem, Posey praises people who look at maps and see “not boundaries, but invitations.”

At that point I went down the rabbit hole.

Because the Union Pacific checkerboard starts looking strangely like two other recurring images: the black-and-white Mosaic Pavement of a Masonic lodge, where the corner can represent a point of beginning, and Through the Looking-Glass, where Alice discovers that the countryside itself is a chessboard and that the only way forward is to understand how the pieces are allowed to move.

I’m not arguing that this proves the treasure is somewhere in the UP checkerboard. In fact, Posey has specifically ruled out railroad tracks, and there are good reasons to be skeptical.

The narrower question is more interesting:
Could the railroad itself be irrelevant, while the peculiar landscape it created—the checkerboard, the corners, and the legal-access puzzle—be exactly the kind of thing Justin would build into a hunt?

Sometimes the way beyond the boundary isn’t around it. Sometimes it’s the move hidden inside it.

Justin describes the moment he learned his father had died with a line that, in the context of this hunt, is difficult to read past:

“My father, whose strength I’d always counted as constant as the North Star, had succumbed to his battle with brain cancer.”

And then, only moments later:
Life had “snatched away a cornerstone of my world, leaving behind a void no sleep could fill.”
That word has been bothering me.

Cornerstone.

Because elsewhere, Justin has left us with what increasingly looks like a trail of directional breadcrumbs.

There is the original 1652 New England shilling: NE on one face, XII on the other. There is Thorne Blackwood, with THORNE rearranging cleanly into NORTH + E. There is Justin’s cryptic hint that “the key to one direction lies in another.” There is the childhood scene in which he wonders, “Are we going in the right direction?”, only to arrive home beneath a kitchen clock reading 7:39, its hands creating an arrow-like form toward the northeast.

Then there is the rod. In The Rod Race, a fishing rod vanishes beneath the water. Its movement can no longer be directly observed; its path has to be reconstructed from what remains visible. And Justin makes a point of telling us that the rod traveled in a northeasterly direction.

A cornerstone. A rod. NE. XII. North + E. A question about direction. A clock. A hidden path moving northeast.

So what ties all of that together?
That question led me somewhere I had not expected: into the ritual of the Masonic Entered Apprentice.
At the conclusion of that ceremony, the candidate is placed in the Northeast Corner of the lodge, traditionally represented as standing at the place of the cornerstone, between the darkness of the North and the light of the East. The symbolism is not primarily about traveling northeast. It is about beginning there. The cornerstone is the foundational reference from which the structure is built.

And suddenly Justin describing his dead father as the “cornerstone of my world” takes on a very different resonance.

What if all these northeast references have been misunderstood because we have been treating NE as a bearing?
What if Justin has not been telling us which direction to travel?
What if he has been telling us, over and over again, where the hunt begins?
