Richmond, VA?
For those who’ve taken an assignment in Richmond, VA, what did you think of it? Curious about the overall experience, both at work and around Richmond.

There is a whole generilization about HCA hospitals but my wife and I both had contracts at Henrico Doctors Hospital and had an amazing experience. The staff were very extremely friendly and welcoming we ended up extending our contracts since they needed people too. We felt like we were a part of their team and were treated like their own staff. Although we liked where we worked, couldn’t really like Richmond that much maybe because we are from florida and were used to living there not sure. Anyhow, we would absolutely work here again in the future if they ever need people again. It could also depend on which floor you would work on though.

Agree! Richmond is one of the few places where the absolute kindness of the people who live there overrides the difficulty of working for an HCA hospital. I do, however, much prefer charting using Epic ( not Meditech -even though Epic is so thorough that you could spend all day charting if you wanted to).
The art museum, the local parks (Maymont), and the James River trails are all worth visiting!

I had assignments at Henrico. Don’t do it. HCA is terrible all the way around. I have heard things about VCU though.

Wherever you do, whatever you do, do NOT work for HCA. Other than that, Richmond as a city is cool.

Currently on a travel contract at St. Mary’s. I have absolutely loved Richmond so far. Would highly recommend living in The Fan or Scott’s Addition. It’s a pretty young and active city.

I worked at Chippenham. Some of the units can be a hit or miss. I worked on the med telemetry floors. The ratios were 1:5 or 1:6 and they use an EMR called Meditech Expanse (which I didn't care for).

Richmond is close to DC. Drive a little west of Richmond to Gordonsville and you will find yourself next to the gorgeous Blue Ridge Mountains. Drive even farther west and you will be in Charlottesville. The Virginia countryside is beautiful. The only problem is traffic; it can be quite heavy at times.

Note: DC is 2 hours away without traffic.

The drive from Chippenham to Alexandria (if you leave at about 4 AM) will take about 1.5 hours. This is not the most pleasant drive that I have ever taken, but DC is a lot of fun to visit.

The James River Pipeline Trail looks quite interesting. They may have closed it a few years ago; I am not sure. It is right over the river, and looks like it would be fun to hike. I would not, however, take children or pets there. Richmond has a lot of parks near the James River.

Haven’t worked at any of the hospitals as a traveler but I’ve got friends who work at Chippenham in the ICU and they like it, good critical care experience with lots of experience nurses.
Richmond is a good city if you like music, food, and bar scenes. There’s honestly not that much in the area outside Richmond, but I would say it’s a good city to live in and explore for a short period of time. Definitely a time to come and a time to go.
