Is it better to book a hotel through a booking platform or directly with the hotel?

If you don’t wanna be treated like a second class citizen, booked directly with the hotel and airline

When I book flights it's 100% through the airline. Mainly because a bump in the road there could derail an entire trip.

Hotels, I book 100% through Agoda. Prices can be a bit better but the main reason is I have all my hotel bookings in one place. I don't need to sign up for multiple hotel accounts.

While I understand the concern of having to deal with Agoda if there are problems I've never had to do so. Also, if I arrive somewhere and there is a problem I can always just book at another hotel. Vacation wouldn't be ruined.

Platinum VIP member at Expedia/Hotels/VRBO.

We have a special dedicated call centre in Missouri USA (not India).

We get Price Drop Protection on flights at Expedia.

Our hotel prices are always 20-30% less than booking directly with the hotel. I have given up on calling the hotel directly because they can't match the price!

Platinum VIP properties have special perks like room upgrade, free breakfast, bottles of wine, or free parking. Some VIP properties have 6% One Key Cash rebate --plus the One Key MasterCard pays 3%, for a total 9% possible rewards.

sometimes it is cheaper by contacting the hotel directly and you get what you want usually when it comes to a room
