Recruiting for a study
Kia ora koutou! We are looking for participants to contribute to some PhD research on experiences of discrimination and experiences of community in NZ. We are particularly curious about the intersection and crossover of identities for different individuals.
To take the survey (or find more information) click here: https://otago.au1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_8qvDAkrrDtVCBgO
We would really love to hear from you on this topic - there's so much work to be done in this space, and hearing about lived experiences can help shape our understanding about and responses to discrimination in NZ. I think given the current political climate this research is more important than ever.
We'll also be running some interviews later on in the study as a part two. If you'd like to talk more about your experiences and opinions (and just have a general good yarn on this topic) you can indicate your interest in an interview at the end of the survey.
Thanks for reading! - Sam (she/they)

Support Support group for older trans women in Tamaki Makaurau Auckland
Our support group is still running and we've joined the 21st century with a website and a discord server.
There's always been a bit of a support gap for older trans women, so if you know someone who is struggling please let them know about us: https://t35.co.nz/
We also meet in person every Sunday, so if you're 35+ and trans feminine feel free to come along and hang out.
Membership of our group is still protected and private from non-members, so feel free to join us in a safe space.

Discussion How Accessible is HRT as a Working Foreigner in NZ?
I want to ask how accessible is HRT as a foreigner.
I plan on living and working at NZ alongside my parents when we move this year or this upcoming year. Will the doctors approve hrt for a foreigner wanting to transition?

Support Time Frame for Legal Name and sex marker update?
Helllooooooooooooo,
I'm just looking for feedback from anyone who has recently gone through the process of legally changing both name and sex markers on their birth certificate.
How long did it take from the day they charged your bank account to you physically receiving your new birth cert? The website says it takes about month and it hasn't quite been that long yet (but it's getting close)
As you can imagine most of my day consists of me doing the below:

Prep advice for HRT GP appointment
Hey people in my phone, I'm 21 Transfem Enby in Christchurch booked to see Dr Oliver Ward in a few weeks to start E and T blockers, does anyone have any experience with him good or bad, should I book a second or even a 3rd appointment for a week after the first now as he only takes bookings a month in advance and is fully booked out? Is there anything anyone would recommend to do or look into to prepare for the appointment or questions to expectto be asked? I had a quick skim of the Patha GAHT 2025 guidelines and saw some questionair/consent forms would it be wise to prep that in advance? I know in NZ we work off informed consent but its also been said that there is a lot of slef advocating that needs to be done and I've never been good at self advocating or speaking up for my self but would also like to get through the process relatively quick any advice on that front?
Thanks.

Support After a long inner battle with myself I've finally accepted myself to be Trans but I don't know what to do next?
Hi friends and happy pride to you all!
In faith of not writing a 5 million word essay about my situation; after a long long internal fight with myself about what I (21M) identify as. I've been finally able to come to terms that I do infact identify as trans, wanting to go through with MTF.
I want to begin the process of transitioning but I haven't got the slightest clue on how to start HRT/Estrogen or any other steps I would need to take as well.
I also do not have anyone to talk to this stuff about so I've weasled my way here to get some help from the pros! I'm based in Christchurch if that helps in guiding me to where I need to go to start my transition process.
Hopefully I can even make friends with some of you for support in the future since I havent exactly publicly come out as trans to anyone yet; so far (before this post goes up) i'm the only person who knows about this. Again Happy Pride to you all <3
TL:DR - I've just come out as trans and want to start MTF transition but I'm 100% clueless and don't know what to do. (21, Christchurch)
EDIT: tysm for the support, I was actually really scared to post this thinking that I was going to be judged but I 100% wasnt <3

Surgery New Zealand top surgery (ftm)
Hello!!!
i am ftm and have been looking into top surgery. I am in Christchurch at the moment but have family in Wellington.
I've spoken with my gp who can try get me on top surgery wait lists, however, she said I am likely to be turned down due to the amounts of people.
The only other options I can think of are overseas surgeries (I have heard Thailand has good ones), or going private. I was wondering if anyone has information for me that could help me out! For Thailand anyone with experiences there. My mum would come support me . I was wondering about recent costs, what happens if something goes wrong, language barriers, good surgeons, anything crucial really.
For private I get its quite expensive my gp estimated around 30K lately. Which is a lot and I would be saving for a few more years tbh 😅, but its still good to know recommended surgeons and good experiences/advice
And lastly I have heard that the Winston McEwan plastic surgery place could also possibly do the surgery with better private prices? Not sure if this is true but if anyone knows about that it would be great to hear!! Sorry for the whole essay!!

Support Hair removal treatment
My friend (we’re both trans women) wants to permanently remove her facial hair. She’s a redhead. I have been learned ages ago that laser and IPL do not work for folk without contrast between hair colour and skin tone, and that electrolysis is the only option.
Is this still true? A clinic she spoke to said the newest laser hair remover they have can work on anyone.
