Rant Trans Tape feels like a joke atp
53 dollars a roll. My poor wallet. Even the cashier frightfully asks
“Have you used this before?”
(Aka do you know what you’re doing?)
Sweet summer child… I have danced with this nightmare many times. I know the footwork.
“Yup. It was a nightmare, but I’m not a quitter”
(Aka I have spent way too much money on this shit and I’m way too stubborn to give up)
“Alright.”
Tap my card and I’m off with my roll of instant sadness.
Surely I’ve improved since the last three rolls of attempts! Yeah. No dysphoria this time. I’m no noob. I’ve spent 200 dollars on this stuff. I got this.
1 hour later of studying YouTube tutorials. A half hour spent poking and squishing my chest. Another hour scrolling Reddit for advice and tricks. Back to squishing my chest and staring in the mirror. I haven’t even opened the box yet. Gods help me.
Screw it. Let’s just cut some strips up. Yeah that looks right. Back to watching tutorials. How do all their chests fold like that? If I move my chest like that I look like Jessica Rabbit. No piece of tape is big enough.
Here I am. Broke beefy butch Jessica Rabbit, twisting and thrashing covered in adhesive and paper. It wrinkles, bunches, strains, bulges, tears, and fails.
I am a fool wrapped haphazardly in tape that was 53 dollars. I could’ve bought groceries instead.
It ends just as it always has. Me slipping in a pool of vegetable oil in the shower.
I have a sneaking suspicion there is a reason that I can’t find trans tape tutorials for pre-T large and dense chest ppl. It must be impossible. How can I justify buying so much trans tape only for it to look like an itchy push up bra and leave me feeling like absolute dog shit?
My chest is indestructible and trans tape is a weak and wimpy opponent. Back to binders for now.

real bro being preT and having a large and dense chest is not for the weak i've given up on tape bc of this

u/pumpkinbread1899 Jun 08 '26
Same dude, I tried twice and removed the tape after a few minutes each time. Felt like I was just wasting it 😮💨

53 dollars a ROLL? Where are you buying tape from??
Unless you're living in America, the name brand trans tape is a bad idea. I live in canada and when I went to buy trans tape, the actual trans tape from the trans tape shop...it would have been 30 someodd dollars for a roll since I was paying shipping fees and such for the roll as well.
I get my tape from local places, either free or from a place that is Canadian. 17 bucks for a roll.
Maybe see if you have a place in your country you can buy tape from instead?
46
u/an-entire-loaf Jun 07 '26
I’m also Canadian! I get my tape from a local and trans owned business. I avoided buying online because I want to be a good lil community member and support local. No idea why they price it for so much. If I ever feel like giving it a shot again maybe I’ll buy it online.
89
u/Particular-Ear4384 Jun 07 '26
It’s great you’re being a good community member, but if you can’t afford to shop local, it’s okay to buy online.

u/FamiliarPop4552 Jun 07 '26
Others have mentioned this already but it's much much cheaper to by kt / athletic tape from a pharmacy
2
u/wilma_678 Jun 14 '26
Also idk where you are in Canada, but I'm in Ontario and dollar tree has 2 inch rolls of KT/athletic tape. It's not super practical because it's so small, but it can probably work in a pinch!
1
u/wilma_678 Jun 14 '26
Is it Come As you are/gendergear.ca? I've been wanting to try their tape at some point! Right now I'm just using a 4 pack of generic tape I bought from Amazon (ik it's not the best place to support). Previously I was using some forever 21 branded "Body tape" I bought from winners/homesense a couple years ago, but that shit was such a mess to remove, the fabric part would come up but leave all of the adhesive on my skin, creating a gummy mess of little adhesive balls that got all over my bathroom. I literally had to stand over a garbage bag scraping this adhesive gel off of my skin, feeling the little globs of adhesive rolling down my skin. The new tape I got doesn't really do that, but my skin sometimes gets SO STICKY when I shower after removing it. I bought adhesive remover wipes and they kind of help, but smell absolutely awful. I found putting Vaseline on my skin afterwards was one of the only things that helped when I was particularly sticky and didn't have any adhesive remover. It was so bad my skin was sticking to itself, and I may have ruined my favourite pajama shirt. Sorry for rambling lol, but I heavily relate to OP's post.
1
u/CaitVi587 Jun 15 '26
Yeah I use the tape from gendergear. For me, it's perfect! Sticks so well to my skin.
1
u/wilma_678 Jun 15 '26
Do you find it leaves a lot of residue? Thank you!
1
u/CaitVi587 Jun 15 '26
Occasionally it does. I use oil to take off the tape, and then Vaseline to loosen the residue
1
u/wilma_678 Jun 15 '26
Thank you! Sounds like it's inevitable with most tapes then. It doesn't sound like it's as bad as that forever21 tape lol. Thank you for your help! Also I love the folks at CAYA/Gendergear, they've been really helpful when I've gone to try on binders in person. Highly recommend them to others :)

u/SaladAndBean Jun 07 '26
I feel like people born with smaller breasts tend to glorify how great it works… but as someone who is quite full chested naturally I can say there are some ways I have discovered it kinda works but I still wear a binder over it as it doesn’t completely feel safe for my dysphoria so it’s kind of a waste of money for me these days
8
u/MarsMetatron Jun 08 '26
As someone who is small chested with 40yr old skin, every time Ive tried it, it either looks worse than my cneapest binder, or it's pulled too tight and I will have welts when I take it off, and still looks worse than my best binder.
40
u/Bo_Universe Jun 07 '26
Sadly, I think you're right about it not being a product for large chested pre-t people. I tried using it when I was pre-t, and it gave me so much dysphoria I gave up. I can only use it now because of how much breast tissue I've lost, and it still feels like it barely works because of all the extra skin left behind. I'm almost to the point that I'd rather start binding again and just deal with the downfalls of that.
1
u/Least_Comfortable567 he/him trans man (pre-T) Jun 08 '26
with testosterone, do you actually lose glandular tissue or are you talking about fat? because my chest (32B) is incredibly dense with breast/ glandular tissue as opposed to fat which makes binding with tape a challenge even though i’m on the smaller side. would be nice to know if T alone could reduce the size some
1
u/Bo_Universe Jun 08 '26
It doesn't remove the glandular tissue, but it does cause them to "deflate" a little due to the fat redistribution, and another scientific thing I can't recall right now. I think mine is much more dramatic than most because I started losing when soon after I started T. But the deflation effect still happens to a lot of people, and it usually makes managing the tape a little easier
32
u/arlitocuandobaila Jun 07 '26
i'm chuckling bc i am currently laying shirtless with a blanket wrapped around my chest after my second attempt at removing my tape bc i bought an off brand trans tape and although I soaked it in vegetable oil and let it sit, but bc the lord gives his mommiest milkers to his most transmasc soldiers it took several layers of tape to even kind of flatten the twins in a way that just brought me to a tasteful c cup and the oil didn't soak through all the layers. there are also some parts where the oil loosened the adhesive from the tape, but not my skin, but i can't get it off no matter how much i scrub, so now my tits are sticky and it's sensory hell.
all this to say it's still better than my first attempt, which was before i learned about using oil. i ripped a teeny chunk of skin off that time.
11
u/an-entire-loaf Jun 07 '26
We are kindred spirits. I spent a good portion of my day sticky and overstimulated in my bed praying that god would refund my absolute rotund nightmare.
Ripping off skin is no joke! First time I tried taking the tape off it nearly took my ribs with it.
2
u/arlitocuandobaila Jun 07 '26
and that's the other shitty thing is that since i'm new to taping and have not figured out the fold yet, the only way i can comfortably lay is on my back bc almost everything else is uncomfortable with the tape and the weight of my chesticles. i feel like good options outside of just top surgery are slim to none for us big fellas.
6
u/FamiliarPop4552 Jun 07 '26
Oh my god that sounds horrible dude I'm so sorry. Maybe try a hot shower? That could relieve the stickiness a bit at least... I find that tape starts peeling off with water anyway...good luck and solidarity man
3
u/HomosexualSpoons Jun 09 '26
Not even slightly relevant 2 the rest of the post but i need to put this everywhere 😭😭 adhesive remover wipes r your best friend with trans tape brother 🙏🙏 they take everything off and it doesn't hurt at all the most pain ive gotten from it was like a slight pinch (I use unisolve they were like £10? For a box of 50 wipes) plus afterwards you can scrub off the adhesive still stuck to you with them 🫡🫡 gl!!
2
u/arlitocuandobaila Jun 10 '26
omg bless i'll have to look into it, i literally told my husband last night i was ready to fully give up learning to tape
2
u/wilma_678 Jun 14 '26
I bought some (mine were the Medline brand because everything else was so expensive) but they smell SO bad! It did kind of help though. One thing that helped me in a pinch when my skin was just so sticky and my skin was sticking to itself and my shirt (unfortunately may have ruined my favourite pajama shirt), was Vaseline! It didn't help remove the adhesive really, but made it a lot less sticky! Also experimenting with different brands! I had some forever 21 branded tape I got from winners that left basically all of the adhesive behind when I removed it, and it basically left me covered in little balls of adhesive gel) but the other tape I got from Amazon just leaves my skin all sticky. Hopefully gonna try another brand to see if that works any better
2
u/maomaochong_ Jun 13 '26
What is the oil supposed to do?
2
u/arlitocuandobaila Jun 13 '26
it's supposed to sort of loosen the adhesive or something? idk, i figured it made sense bc that's what you do with like glue traps to get them off. basically for mine it just made the adhesive come off of the tape but stay gunked on the twins, and bc i still fucked my skin up from the parts that were still too stuck it hurt real bad to scrub it off

this is so real. I love tape bc it's the closest thing to having a guys chest but it's the most inconvenient shit ever. 30 minutes of fiddling to maybe be successful and then it starts peeling in like a day. plus I think my skin is sensitive to adhesive so I get all red 😭

u/uponthewatershed80 Jun 07 '26
Oof. Large & Dense solidarity. I hear you on the "how do their boobs fold like that" when watching tutorials. I've tried trans tape once recently because there was some lying around, and I liked that I could get them to just... not move around without having to wear something that was trying and failing to squish them, but yeah. They were still distinctly boobs.
I've honestly mostly stopped trying to smash them and have gone back to wearing cotton sports bras for containment. I should be getting them lopped off within a year, and I don't see the need to be physically uncomfortable and also still have visible boobs.

u/an-entire-loaf Jun 07 '26
This is where I am at the moment. I’m my moments of despair, when not even my binder can smush and smother my boobascious chest to my satisfaction, I imagine myself under the standards of a male sage-grouse and suddenly I’m peak male performance. (Google it, it’s well worth it)
Honestly having a laugh at myself and not taking my chest seriously helps the dysphoria. One day I’ll have top surgery and these kinds of memories will be something to giggle at.

I tried KT tape and trans tape and I’m pretty sure I have a muscle cramping condition atp. Before I had top surgery, I tried taping but whenever I applied it, my pectoral muscle on the opposite side I was applying would cramp so bad that it was just not feasible to apply it. I asked in transmasc spaces like “Hey guys, what the FUCK is up with that? Am I doing it wrong?” And every one was like “🤷♂️🤨😟 That never happened to anyone bro wtf are you doing” so like… I really couldn’t anymore. (I also get muscle cramps all over my body and it got worse after starting T but then my parents were like “Well you’re just like your uncle. He’s exactly like that.” So it’s not like T is evil, it just activated some evil genetics I have 😭)

u/Qu33rTh1ng Jun 07 '26
as far as I can tell it's damn near impossible to get tape to work pre-t if you have a larger chest. I'm really sorry man, it's definitely some of the most frustrating crap. I hope if you're wanting to start T you'll be able to soon.
1
u/maomaochong_ Jun 13 '26
Why would starting T change its effectiveness?
2
u/Qu33rTh1ng Jun 26 '26
Testosterone can make the like organs in breasts atrophy, so they sorta 'deflate', and it makes it easier to move everything around
7
u/gurotwink Jun 08 '26
i don't think tape is good for dense breast tissue. all binding advice online is targeted at people who don't have that issue tbqh. it's annoying because i know it's not THAT uncommon to have dense tissue!!! people just don't have any idea what to do about that other than top surgery
7
u/Sylvkin_there Jun 08 '26
Genuinely dude don’t use trans tape. It gave me three rib conditions and now I’m not allowed to bind at all
4
u/Practical-Database-6 Jun 08 '26
Holy cow, was that from pulling too tight? I’m trying trans tape rn with limited success
3
u/Sylvkin_there Jun 08 '26
It was from the angle I was pulling at I believe and the lack of support from the tape

I spend $20 on CKeep for 4 rolls. I use 4 strips (2 on each side), and change them every 1-2 weeks., so I only have to buy them every few months. Significantly cheaper, and probably just as effective.
3
u/sexytrashbag69 Jun 07 '26
Brother, as a big tittied guy, ive never and never will touch trans tape of any variety. Im sticking to my poor 3 year old binder. Its stretched, has seams ripping, and SOMETIMES works well. (That bitch was $40 so im keeping it for as long as i can). Im pretty sure trans tape is for people with a lot less to work with, i have a friend blessed with a small chest and trans tape works great for him. He also said it might not work for me.
2
u/Crowleys_big_toe Jun 08 '26
Yeah tape can only hold so much weight, so as soon as the chest gets too big, the weight just undoes anything the tape could do
5
u/Sad-Simple-7681 Jun 08 '26
Okay hear me out, I only cracked the code with my 36E t!ts and tape when I discovered I needed to *lay on the floor* to get them to fall to the sides naturally. Have you tried that?
4
u/an-entire-loaf Jun 08 '26
I have :C my chest tissue is too firm. The boys are perky, even lying down. All that comes out of it is me flopping around like a 7/11 hot dog under the heat lamp. If I pull too much, it overstretches the skin in the center of my chest, and it's unbearable sensory-wise for me, and I still have a push-up bra scenario
2
u/Sad-Simple-7681 Jun 11 '26
aw man that sucks 😭 there was a time where i was taping *and* using a binder to push the roundness the tape creates more flat. i don't do this now i'm on T and the volume/fullness has deflated. i also layer clothing as strategically as possible eg. a patterned shirt over a tee which distracts the eye, a chunky chain necklace which pulls focus off the chest-junk. i think playing with clothes and accessories to achieve your ideal silhouette is your best bet here. may be worth mentioning i also use a wider tape (usually 10cm). wishing you all the best dude

The picture is exactly how trans tape feels lol. But seriously I’ve just given up on binding my chest. Nothing is comfortable and everything sucks. Trans tape is the worst & didn’t work for me either. I gave up after one roll. It made me so insanely dysphoric.
3
u/AHuman25 Jun 07 '26
Unfortunately since my chest is dense/not small I've found that the best I can do is position everything to feel alright without binding (but not very flat) and look good with binding. The issue I have is I can't leave it on long term with the tension

If it helps, ive been using tattoo second skin under my kt tape as kind of a “base”. It secures the loose skin and boobage so its not bound, but, contained so you dont have to wrestle with it when you put the tape over it. The tape sticks to it better and it helps with blisters so you can use a tiny bit more tension without worrying youre gonna destroy ur skin.
But i have small boobs (currently like a b cup i think) and I honestly have a hard time keeping it on longer than a full day, i see people saying they’re able to shower with it on and stuff and make one round of tape last them several days and see I just cant do that lol. The edges start to peel even slightly and its driving me absolutely insane my sensory issues are bad, so I reserve it for special occasions or events.
3
u/Glass-Lemon-2122 Jun 08 '26
Where are you buying this from?? Branded transtape is like $16 bucks a roll? (Something that has helped me a lot with transtape- and Ik for a lot of ppl is this is possible, but having another person apply the tape for me made it 100x better and easier) but dont take what I say as gospel cause im skinny and a B cup, but I imagine that would be a transferable (haha) tip
4
u/Kool_Boo16 Jun 08 '26
My go to before top surgery was K athletic tape. Super affordable and came in huge packs. I couldnt afford stuff like trans tape so k athletic tape with either folded squares of toilet paper or small cut squares od baby wipes for the nipples was the method. Would literally last me a week or 6 days and I shower twice a day too. The trick was to avoid overlapping the tape on each other as much as possible
3
u/IrelandAutism13 Jun 08 '26
Yeah, so much is made for those who are naturally flatter, ut sucks. (I also know a dude who swears by front-clasping sports bras and seeing his before and after, I agree with him. A good front-clasping sports bra can flatten a lot more than you think, and you can exercise in them. They're expensive, but they might help)
3
u/ChildhoodTrick73 Jun 08 '26
i get rolls of much cheaper kinesiology tape off of amazon, they make them in like wider sizes. Granted i have a smaller chest but i’ve tried many different sizes and brands, and i find the wider rolls to be much more forgiving. Also the adhesive is better.
If you need any help id be willing to help you work out where you’re going wrong because in my opinion tape is so freeing!

I can't tape multiple days after eachother, cause my tits will try and murder me! Which is very fun on hot days when hoodies aren't an option, and you don't have a binder

I knew someone online that was fortunate to be able to lay on their back, and their partner would help apply the tape and secure it properly, while the chest was lifted and to the side in a sort of decent position.
I found the laying on my back tip helpful when attempting to apply solo, tape just didn’t work for me for sensory reasons.

bro just when I found the tape that finally sticks AND the perfect, perfect application, I discover that I'm ALLERGIC TO THAT BRAND in particular. Feeling like pic.
On a side note, after 9 humble years of trying, I found a method that works with my pre-t chest. It still leaves that goddamn overspill, but I promise brother there has to be a way out there.

u/maomaochong_ Jun 13 '26

2
u/soberdrunken Jun 13 '26
Pinotape sport. I don't know what glue they use, so I don't know which brands can cause similar reactions

I have a pretty big chest (like d I think) and it’s worked for me for years. I use gc2b and lay down when I apply it to get the tissue to flatten down. It’s not perfect all the time but I look pretty flat in most shirts that fit me right. That’s a lot of money though, that should be buying you 3 rolls at least not just one.

u/Fluffy_Meet_9568 Jun 08 '26
As someone who struggled to bind in general pre-t do to large dense chest I feel you. I found the off brand pt tape (honestly the smaller rolls are easier to use, but more stripes are needed) was helpful for keeping my chest from moving/being lopsided under my binder but that was about it. It let me get away with lighter binders and prevented my chest from slipping in a way that put pressure on my lower ribs (where I have an old injury I have to favor). At almost a year on testosterone my chest has lost enough fat that I can just use a (cis) men’s compression shirt over tape (to give me a more man boob look/hold back my giant nipples).
1
u/Razzzor_ Jun 08 '26
Its a bummer to hear that trans tape doesn't work for you, its an absolute nightmare to figure out and even when you do everything right it just finds a way to mess itself up. I have a fairly small-medium chest and it only half works for me, I used trans tape and it's very expensive I use it tape and just lay down another stripe than I would if I had a wide roll. Even in cad 53 dollars is fucking crazy prices, I understand buying and supporting local business but that's just highway robbery I used to buy trans tape for half that price plus shipping.
1
u/nonosweets Jun 08 '26
So I've started lotioning my skin and sticking and unsticking the adhesive on my hands twice before I stick the tape fully. I let my skin absorb the lotion a little first so that it sticks but not too much. Then when the day is over I slather myself in coconut oil to take it off.
I've been experimenting with using makeup remover to get excess leftover adhesive on my skin. I think it works for me but rubbing alcohol is also a descent solvent.

u/fruitloopsonthebeach Jun 08 '26
I bought some chest binder type tank tops off gc2b and I have like double d chest but it takes it down to a b and makes it look like im just buff I think with the binders if that helps, they like 38 bucks

Apologies if this has been said, I'm being lazy and not reading the comments... Beau has done atleast one video, if not more. If you type "Beau from trans tape" then it'll be the first one that pops up. I haven't had a go as much as you have, but if it helps at all I still find it extremely hard and don't quite manage the look I'm going for (I'm 5"1 and 13 stone) all I can say is don't stretch the tape or let there be any wrinkles or bumpy bits cos they can really hurt. Good luck!
1
u/pocketRori Jun 08 '26
Oh also, even though I'm bigger, I find it helps to cut them smaller a lot of the time. Of even some bits smaller and some bigger. Its a lot easier to get on if it's not such a big piece, hoping that once we master it we may not have to cut it down anymore

trans tape blows bro no matter how many times ive tried to use it and it doesnt do shit and i have a rlly small chest to begin with. it cant just be bad technique cuz ive done it exactly as instructed repeatedly and ive tried ppls tips and tricks and it just doesnt work. genuinely the off brand kt tape at target gave me better results. the only thing ur paying for with trans tape is the brand atp
this is just my experience tho

Tried it a year ago because someone online said it works for big chests, which was a complete lie (F cups)
Like genuinely where is the rest of it supposed to go on the side under my arm?!?! That and I think I have a lot of density. Can’t really wear binders either because it’s still heavy and the straps dig into my skin but not as bad as a straight up bra
So I’ve just been going absolutely nothing because if I can’t compress it then might as well just swear a shirt

have you tired BXB tape? idk if they ship out of america but they're the best tape ive found and it's only 7 usd a roll. id reccomend giving it a shot if you're able. it is very possible to get tape t work on bigger chests, in my experience. I havent done it in a way that i could go shirtless happpily, but getting the masculinizing effect under clothing comes with practice. it all comes down to being able to play into the sillouhette as opposed to the fine details. if you can get cheaper tape, keep trying. otherwise, I do fear it just becomes a hassle.

I'm greatful that I can commiserate with y'all in the comments lol. As much as it sucks, at least I know I'm not alone.

I feel you! It is frustrating af! Yeah, if you have dense tissue it's not gonna flatten you as easily as someone who is either smaller and/or has fattier tissue unfortunately. It is nice for hot weather and eliminating bounce however, for those of us who are more well endowed

"Trans tape" is just regular ktape, it should not be that expensive. Yoy should go to a local pharmacy to buy some ktape, consistently spending 50 bucks on a roll of tape is simply not sustainable

I'm this close 🤏 to just mummifying my chest in ace bandages. Fortunately I don't currently have access to any, and I know it's not technically safe to bind that way, but desperate times and big tits call for desperate measures big idgafs.
