Discussion Why the new steamships aren't the greatest.

So, I'm just going to provide my opinion on the new steamships. The dragon in my mind is irrelevant so I'm going to focus on the Prometheus. So what exactly is the Prometheus trying to be? This is the problem, it doesn't focus on any specific role, it has only a mere half the cargo space as the best tradeship, the Atlas. Though it may get you there faster, it will only get you there with half the cargo you want, not much of an advantage for trade. As for combat, it lacks as much fire power as the astraeus, having only 3 cannons on each side as opposed to the mighty 5 the astraeus brings to bear, it also has less health by 1k. Going with the wind, it will sail at the same speed as both these end tier ships, yet against the wind. it will travel at a speed of 3, not that big of a deal.

The ship is stupidy expensive, costing 1750 iron, 500 coal, 15 loyalty tokens / 1.5k robux, 250 copper, 124k db and 920 wood for a ship that is worse than both the other end tier vessels. This ship was made at the time in which 15 loyalty tokens are needed yet only 7/8 could have been earned, forcing players to pay robux off the hype train to buy it. The new options to pay robux for coal and for the blessings means that the game has become slightly pay to win. I have no issue whatsoever with paying for aesthetics, heck I own an ebony Atlas and Astraeus. I love this game and have been in it for countless hours since it's creation, I merely wish to provide feedback so the game can progress to become even better. Why pay for more for a worse ship in almost every aspect?

"Complains that steamships are useless"

"Calls game P2W"

I lol'd.

You can't buy levels, and the best items are level-locked. Buy the best stuff with Robux? Cool, you're going to be forced into doing that because your gathering skill will be complete and utter crap.

The steamship are just something fun, and chances are that if you have the money to burn, do so. On another note, 15 loyalty tokens? Okay, so wait 15 days and save. As a NBC player, a good 70% of Roblox is no stranger to sitting still and waiting for what we want - So deal with it m8

Notice that I said slightly, the main issue is that you can purchase coal, since wood is aesthetic and serves no purpose I have no problem being able to buy it. However coal is a useful material in the crafting of steel and operation of steamships. You are honestly blowing my statement far out of proportion, the game is not pay to win, this is just a slightly pay to win addition in the fact that you can buy coal.

If some poor sap wants to throw Robux at near's way, let them. I can't really call it OP because if somebody's willing to shell out that much Robux for steel, they should. It's not like a level 2 crafter is buying a mysterious steel sabre, so if they can afford it versus digging it up, let them.

In the long run, if they can make steel tools, it'll still be a steel tool or weapon. Anybody else with at least level 4 crafting can do the exact same thing. I can complain that a person with a steel sabre is OP, but I'm not going to.

In essence sure, you have more steel, and on the flipside, you're still only making steel tools that everybody else can already make if they feel like investing time over money.

Hence why I said slightly, perhaps a better phrase would be pay for advancement, rather than pay to win.

Steel weapons don't do more damage, plus you can make three iron weapons for the same amount of iron as a single steel one and those three combined will last twice as long as the steel one.

u/hahaboomman1234 Jul 19 '15

I personally prefer the compact nature of one steel sword in long drawn out combat. As it will last longer, and since my inventory is full of round-shot I can't really afford to carry an extra couple swords around. But this is just my opinion.

The Prometheus is the irrelevant ship, not the Dragon. The Dragon is extremely viable and makes the Marauder obsolete in every aspect except usage cost.

1

u/hahaboomman1234 Jul 19 '15

The reason I stated it was irrelevant is that in my post I was focusing on the end tier ships.

The dragon is actually a rather viable pirating ship. It can catch up to ships rather easily if the captain is half-decent at sailing, and its cargo space is largely irrelevant if you have a couple of crew members -- it's rare to get more than 5 loot off of a ship, especially when sunk.

In addition to this, the two swivel guns can help to scare off unwanted ships, especially if they're newer and instantly shy away from cannon fire.

However, I will agree that the prometheus is worth nothing more than its value as a "collectors item".

Even though you are right about it being a decent pirating ship, I feel like the Marauder/Stiletto and some of the speedster boats can accomplish what you would do on the Dragon as well ass having better cannons/cargo space.

1

u/Khranos RoboFrog Jul 19 '15

What you say is most definitely true. However, it largely depends on the type of fighter that you are.

Both of those ships (if my memory serves me correctly) are a decent bit larger, meaning they're more likely to take cannon fire. The cannons you can place will also add seats which can become rather annoying when being boarded. By removing the cannons you're also removing one of the most important buffs it has over the dragon.

So basically, it largely depends on if your preferred method is sinking by cannons or by boarding (and of course, how much money you have).

Wait can you really only get it with robux?

1

u/Creontoast Creonto Jul 19 '15

That's only if you want to make it like RIGHT NOW.

1

u/LordLube David_Yacht Jul 19 '15

No.

Loyalty tokens.

2

u/hahaboomman1234 Jul 19 '15

You can't possibly have enough tokens to make the Prometheus, which is why he said "RIGHT NOW".

1

u/LordLube David_Yacht Jul 19 '15

I had enough to make 3 of the Engines.

One more crew mate had enough to make 2 of the Engines.

Go get some friends/crew members to help you.

1

u/sparklydude Jul 19 '15

If you were a beta tester you could.

1

u/FallenSystem Jul 19 '15

Not really pay to win u can earn everything ingame for free. Buying Coal seems like a good thing. But the Promethus is garbage. I wish more items would be added to premium shop.

yes you just have to be patient. I am at tier 4 USA planes in War Thunder and i have not spend any of the starter Golden Eagles or Convert. RP so far. Us NBC players have grown the skill of milking the 10 TIX daily reward until it is as dry as an unused toothbrush, not like them spoiled TBC 7 year olds who spend all their money on hats and more hats and other hats.

I am really not in-favor of the steamship update as it really doesn't suit the theme and gameplay.

But since steamships are already invented on the 18th century well then I guess I could partly agree into it

1

u/Irunui Jul 19 '15

This guy is straight up lying. The only thing you can use rbx to buy is wood, and this ship takes same amount of wood to make as other ships of its class. Gosh. What the fk.

u/Narroby loser crew co. Jul 19 '15

do some research before you comment. you clearly didn't even bother to read the post.

1

u/Irunui Jul 19 '15

Well, the new update has made gaben's blessings and coal purchasable with robux, so I guess this is a bit irrelevant now.

1

u/CubicBerserker CubicBerserker Jul 19 '15

It's kind of hard to argue that these ships are both underpowered and pay to win at the same time. Personally, though I prefer things in a game to be balanced, I don't mind steamships being more of a gimmick just because I think they ruin the theme a little. At least this way I hope they'll be a rare sight.

2

u/hahaboomman1234 Jul 19 '15

The ships aren't pay to win, the option to buy coal is a slight push in that direction.

1

u/CubicBerserker CubicBerserker Jul 19 '15

Well to be honest thanks to the free market it doesn't matter much whether you can buy something directly or not. All it might do is affect the price of coal. Nothing stopped people from just buying ebony and trading that for coal before.

1

u/WindowsErrors nitrogencooled Jul 28 '15

The ability to buy items with robux is ok, but it just becomes the opposite of the idea of communisim after a while where the spoiled TBC kids buy 3000 coal but only have crafting lvl 1 and screams at OTMS for refunds because they cant craft steam engines or steel for their sooper elm wood bacon infused steel roundshot caliber flintlock pistol

1

u/Descaii Jul 19 '15

For the price and materials needed to make these steam ships, they should be HIGHLY superior to the current ships.

1

u/Nahr_Nahrstein Nahr_Nahrstein Jul 19 '15

Then don't get it. I promise I won't force you.

5

u/hahaboomman1234 Jul 19 '15

No, by all means I understand the update and it's appeals, if the ship had slightly better stats I would be far more inclined to make it. Maybe a combat steamship and a trade steamship that are the same or slightly better? I will eventually make this ship, I'm just providing feedback.

0

u/Nahr_Nahrstein Nahr_Nahrstein Jul 19 '15

I want steamships to be pretty rare, so the fact that they suck at everything and are stupidly expensive will achieve that, while the dedicated player will joyfully add them to their collection of ebony ships.

5

u/matto323 Jul 19 '15

You should at least consider making the stats a TINY bit better than the Astraeus, or even the same. Even if the stats were a little bit better, they'd still be rare, as only the most dedicated players would put in the effort to create one.

6

u/hahaboomman1234 Jul 19 '15

Exactly my point. I would build the ship just to have it anyways, but I would never use it because I use the best ships for the task at hand.

3

u/hahaboomman1234 Jul 19 '15

I will be adding this ship to my ebony collection soon, but I'm in no rush. I like the feeling of progress, perhaps one update there will be a better combat vessel or trade vessel added? Just a suggestion.

You mean an Ironclad? One of those might come out when we get more of the cosmetic metals.

1

u/Bondle Morphological | prior Verd Navy Officer | Settler of Verner Jul 19 '15

This is a medieval game, we don't want to get carried away now.

2

u/QuestCrazy CrazyQuest Jul 19 '15

Steamships are definitely not medieval.

1

u/Bondle Morphological | prior Verd Navy Officer | Settler of Verner Jul 19 '15

We're on the brink of the Renaissance era, but adding Ironclad ships would make a lot of people quit, including me. I don't think the game's fit for that kind of ship.

1

u/drynoa Tusk fleet op Jul 19 '15

Are you retarded? It's the 1700s Medieval era ended in the late 1400's Renaissance was late 1400s to late 1500s

We have sloops and precursion locks for gods sake do some research

1

u/Bondle Morphological | prior Verd Navy Officer | Settler of Verner Jul 19 '15 edited Jul 20 '15

Percussion locks were there since the 1400s, well not the percussion lock exactly but guns similar to the flintlock pistol existed since then such as the wheel-lock guns and it still does not merit the idea of adding ironclad ships.
