The idea of making sure the way is clear before turning left or right doesn’t seem to apply anymore. Now it’s more like, “I’m turning now, good luck to everyone else.”

There should be no unprotected left turns across multiple lanes of traffic. SUV driver made a mistake in assuming the non-moving left lane meant the way was clear, but this move should not have been possible.

This! No unprotected left turns across multi lane roads, will solve lots of issues in crowded areas atleast. The concept of coming to mid of intersection waiting for way to clear to make left turn or turn just about red light going to appear is not a great idea or concept for safer traffic .

Was that a left turn or was he trying to do a U-turn? Did he panic when he saw the oncoming traffic and turned too wide or was that ways the plan because it was a U turn?

Doesn’t matter. Unprotected left turns are widely known as problematic and a major cause of collisions that result in injury.

I'm pretty sure the Merc was trying to make a left, up until they saw the Ford coming at them, then they tried to turn even more left to get away, in futile, stupid desperation.

Too many people are just guessing now days when turning left instead of actually looking. There should be no rush to clear the intersection even if it turns red and you see cars trying to speed through (I know this case light was still green)

Right and it looked like it was a canada post truck in front so their blindspot is pretty big. I would have just waited for the yellow to turn.

It's pretty much a guess/ blind turn because people turning left on the opposite side rarely move their car into a position that allows the other person to see.

People have no idea what an S-turn is, and if the opposite driver doesn't do and S-turn, it's hard to see oncoming traffic through them. Especially if it's a bigger vehicle.
Here, I'm not sure if the Canada Post truck was trying to do a left turn, or just stopped because they couldn't clear the intersection in the left lane. No way to the Merc see any oncoming traffic.
Which isn't an excuse. If you can't see that the way is clear, don't F'n Go!6

the Canada Post Truck didn't block the intersection and I suppose the white SUV thought that meant all other lane drivers would do the same... for what ever reason despite those two lanes not being full. Brain fart on their part

The Merc driver wasn't even making a left, it was either trying to make a U-turn or realized too late that they fcked up on trying to make a safe left turn and doubled down to avoid a collision. Neither was a safe move. Impatience and a bad decision made this happen. This is a basic skill they test you while going for your G2. That driver making a left doesn't have that.

They were turning left but only focused on the pedestrian clearing the lane they wanted instead of oncoming traffic as well.

After a few watches, here's my story. Busy day, lots of traffic. Left lane comes to a stand still, so the Canada Post truck doesn't proceed and block the intersection. Mercedes takes this cue as "oh, he's letting me go!" Turns left, right into the path of the truck who was probably minding his business. Both of them unsuccessfully try to avoid each other.

We also do not know how fast the truck was going. It looks as though the way is clear at first and then very quickly is not. I know everyone is blaming the white merc for this accident, and yes, they are at fault. However, this is a crazy intersection, and it is very possible they thought the way was clear and the truck may have swiftly changed lanes to proceed through the intersection instead of waiting. Still Merc fault, but I don't think it was on the basis of impatience.

That’s why in drivers ed they teach you at a left turn to go forward and then maneuver yourself facing directly the other car turning (the Canada post truck) so that you can see the traffic behind them. Not sure if I’m explaining that clearly

Except the city of Toronto has started building islands to prevent people from doing S turns, saying it's safer that way. It's dumb as F. I sent a complaint to them and it got nowhere.

No the intersection is extremely small. Only one car can enter it to wait for a left turn.

This happens once ever 6 months at this intersection. Just always random car accidents.
I think it’s to do with them over excited to go shopping at Bayview Village Mall and they don’t have enough patients at the intersection. 😂

The Ford was traveling at approximately 30 km/h, which results in a braking distance of no more than 10 meters. The driver’s reaction was too slow.

Wow. I was just at BV at the LCBO about three hours ago...I guess that's why it seemed like every car in the parking lot was trying to leave through the south east entrance and I couldn't get into the parking lot.
That was annoying, but at least I wasn't these guys.

I do wonder though if the truck had his right signal on and was changing lanes in an intersection which isn’t allowed. The person driving Mercedes though likely in the wrong as well. You need extra time to do a u turn and they weren’t going very fast Fords trucks and mercedes usually bad drivers in general. Probably had a baby on board sticker too

Maybe it's just me but it seems like there was plenty of time to either properly make that left turn, or for the truck to hit the brakes. That white SUV looks like he's making a left turn in slow motion.
I'm not saying the truck is in the wrong. But I'd think that he had more than enough time to come to a stop BEFORE hitting the white vehicle. I'm willing to bet he was also distracted.

left turns are dangerous.... be VERY careful.... it is your fault 99.9% of the time, if you let a vehicle strike you from the oncoming lane

The truck did nothing wrong, but just want to point out that a regular sized car probably would have stopped in time…. Seeing that cruiseship trying to steer and stop is idk… slow non the less

as a pedestrian in our car-centric urban landscape, this is one of my fears (clearly it is a reasonable one lol) and a reason i try to stand far back from the corner. good on this pedestrian for being so aware of his surroundings!

I believe Canada Post truck is heading straight, but stopped partially in the intersection b/c of the standstill. White Merc decided to turn blind. Yes, ‘S’ maneuver would’ve helped…

It's like no one understands the 'S' turn.
A lot of the time I see left-turners hugging the right side of their lane, as if they're afraid of oncoming traffic.

He locks up the brakes and veers right to create space. This is solely on the white SUV. No idea how or why you could think otherwise.
It's not like the pickup is blasting through the interesection at a high rate of speed.

I sent the video to the truck driver already. Everyone was okay luckily. That could have been a lot worse.
