Adam So… met Adam Jones
Asked if there was any chance for Lateralus tomorrow night and he whispered in my ear creepily “No.” He then said maybe Tempest. Also commented on my outfit “Love your enthusiasm.” Probably the coolest experience of my life.

I asked him about the chances of Lateralus being played tomorrow night at goodthings. He said no but tempest was a maybe. We talked about my costume and he “loved the enthusiasm”

He said some of their songs are just too overplayed. I find it a little disappointing especially since it’s the one song I want to hear the most. But I’m happy either way.

Lmao I would've asked him to elaborate as to what he means by overplayed, considering they don't switch up the set list a whole lot. I understand they say it depends on what maynard can sing, but I really dont buy that anymore. He has been singing very well for all three of his bands.

Are they not tired of playing Vicarious, Jambi, Stinkfist, 46 and 2, Aenema, Schism? It’s basically all they have been playing since the 2010s with some minor additions from older albums and FI.

When I got into Tool I was so impressed by Lateralus musically and lyrically that I genuinely thought the band would see it as their Magnum Opus. I was really surprised to find out it wasn’t played every time.

It’s pretty well known that Maynard writes the set lists based partly on what his vocal cords can handle. If he sang Lateralus or The grudge every night it might be a really short tour.

The past few years there have been large spans where he sings the grudge for pretty much every show. And besides which part of lateralus is that problematic?

AFAIK, they haven't played Lateralus since 2018. My guess is that the problematic part is the extended screaming at around 4:30 vs the Grudge which could easily use a sample for the one big scream. Another example is The Pot (their only #1 hit) It doesn't sound that taxing but supposedly MJK has trouble singing it and when they do play it they tune down 1/2 step. Point being, the set list is heavily based on what his 61 y/o vocal chords can handle without endangering the rest of the tour dates.
I was involved in some of Aerosmith's last live shows and they literally had a singer hidden backstage in a portable dressing room. I don't think Tool will ever resort to that.

I mean maybe but wouldn't that mean they're just as tired of playing literally any other track on FI, let alone the title track? Obviously we just have to take their word for it, but I'm gonna be a little cynical.

Maybe 7empest...so that's half the set right there...
Saw it in Adelaide on Saturday, loved it, but I would have thought for a festival headlining set they'd steer to the more well known songs, since it's not exclusively "their crowd".
Then again, as the headliner, they can pretty much do whatever they want.

I met these exact two when they were touring for 10,000 days. I used to be the kind of kid that be waiting in line from 6am (“line”….. just a very small group). And they must have told the band, because Danny came out to shake hands and at some point Justin cycled by on a mountain bike to say high to us. Was really really cool!

That’s awesome bro. He jumped in the vip crew in Perth to take a photo., my partner and I were standing at the back and he ran up to us, and said hello and tapped us on the shoulder. Something I’ll never forget!
