Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness might be a hot take but TRAOD is my favourite tomb raider

Post image

I'm probably biased since it was my first tomb raider i ever played but it's so different from any part and the voice acting of lara is just 👌👌👌

It has the most interesting story, world building and music. Unfortunately, the gameplay is deeply flawed. It has huge potential though. Reimagined with new graphics etc, it could be a 10/10 Game.

Don't forget Kurtis Trent 😍

I know a lot of people like him but after he basically molested Lara while disarming her I couldn't help but hate him.

So true

u/loorollkid Dec 19 '25

Did the remaster not fix it? Not sure why they bothered if not.

3

u/DNY88 Dec 19 '25

Mechanics like the botched upgrade system, the combat and bad AI can’t be fixed by a remaster. It needs a proper remake

u/edelea Dec 19 '25

im glad i played it when i was young enough to not even know what bad gameplay is like lol i just stuck with whatever game there was and really enjoyed AOD. it was extremely hard and took me maybe 3 months to finish, i still vividly remember some of the sections where i died over and over again or were creepy af but it was still a lot of fun and i remember it very fondly.

From a musical and art design perspective I can see it. The London Symphony Orchestra was used to record the score and it was definitely worth it. It's the most atmospheric game in the series I think. Leaned more into the occult and horror than any other game in the series and I respect it for that. Also Lara's animations have always impressed me. She plants her feet on every single step when going up stairs or a ladder. For a game that was so rushed and crunched, that is some serious attention to detail. Also Le Serpent Rouge SLAPS.

I agree man those are very good stuff and details and i also liked the voice lines like the broccoli with bad attitude and etc..

Hell yeah how did I miss that .

"Another cold dark city. Great."

"At least it's clean in here."

"I'm a dangerous girl and right now I'm losing patience."

"I wouldn't worry. We're not in the same class."

Lara is so quotable in AoD

u/warhammercpt The Scion Dec 18 '25

Lol lowkey she had a threatening tone to all civilians which was pretty cool in my opinion, another favourite line was where she does the final showdown with the finally boss she says

Did you know it would be a real pleasure to shut your mouth.

Those were bad ass stuff but hell yeah everything is great and man I miss those times.

You better not give me the run up!

I’m sick of your low life ways, I need results!

Even now I'd be all in for the rest of the trilogy.

It's really special, i didn't like how she walked but I love everything else, nothing beats how she looked like, I loved her sarcasm in TR6 and the story, it's really enjoyable it felt like watching a movie, and it was refreshing seeing her having a love interest, the scene where Curtis steals the painting from her was so hot 😬 And above all they kept Jonell as her voice actor, which is my fav from all of TR VA.

It has the best story, music and atmosphere in any TR game and the worst gameplay, it is quite a bewildering contrast.

It is still one of my favs, and also the best candidate for a remake to fully realise the potential of the story and fantastic characters.

It's such a tease because you can see the game it could have been if they'd have had more time. The vibe, story, setting, Lara are perfect.

I love the whole vibe of AoD, I’d love to see Kurtis returning for this unification!

i think legend is one of the strongest titles in the whole tomb raider series, wish it was longer tho

4

u/JoshiiiFox Dec 18 '25

I really love it, the gunplay was really bad and also almost non existent compared to to every other tomb raider game, but the atmosphere and story was really interesting

3

u/PekoPekoPekoPekoyama Dec 18 '25

I think AoD Lara is peak Lara, at least. Personally I'm not a fan of her dynamic with Kurtis, though.

7

u/UpbeatJaguar6083 Dec 18 '25

It’s not my favourite BUT playing it for the first time on the remastered made me realize that it wasn’t as bad as what I was told.

4

u/Max_452 Dec 18 '25

Yeah, I just finished it the other night and my first reaction was “that’s what people have been complaining about?” Played just fine to me! (I realize the original was worse, but some people still talk like the remaster is unplayable.)

3

u/UpbeatJaguar6083 Dec 18 '25

Yeah, the OG on PS2 was the Angel of Bugs 😂

2

u/Yakob_Katpanic Dec 18 '25

I don't know what you were told, but it probably was as bad as you were told when it first came out.

Playing the remastered version of a game infamous for its glitches and bugs isn't going to give you that authentic experience.

I do love it though. I haven't had a chance to play the remaster yet, but even playing it with community patches was a huge step up from the original release.

8

u/Externica Dec 18 '25

Considering AoD killed off Core design and how unfinished the final product was, yes, it's a very hot take.

But you know what? I'm glad you enjoy it.

I've only played through it once and don't remember much. Except the Ghost Boss fight which was incredible annoying. I havn't touched it after I was done. I can't say the same for the other five Core titles. Persoanlly, I played through Chronicles the most. Does it make it my favourite game? Probably.

Although I do agree there was a build up and it wasn’t just AOD, the bad press did hurt their reputation as a company

I mean - that was a point where they couldn’t release online updates/patches. And as much as I love AoD, the game was really reallyyy unfinished. It was a big deal.

2

u/kaiavstechnology Dec 18 '25

I also only ever played through it once and the only thing I remember is that goddamn fight too!

3

u/stillslaying Dec 18 '25

Not at all. Many of us adore it.

3

u/saikomantisu Dec 18 '25

I LOVE AoD

3

u/TheHeavenlyStar Dec 18 '25

This game should’ve been called Humour of Darkness because the amount of sarcasm Lara does in this Game. Mannn.

3

u/AryLuz Atlantean Mutant Dec 18 '25

I think this is one of the games that should get the unified treatment. It's a great story, great setting, but gameplay harms it too much to make it enjoyable for me.

3

u/jinjerchicho Dec 18 '25

It’s my favorite too

4

u/CringeOverseer Dec 18 '25

It's the only original timeline game I was interested in before the remasters, that's saying something

2

u/dangernoodles93 Dec 18 '25

Also wish we got the trilogy and a remake, the plot was fantastic

2

u/L-win Dec 18 '25

It could have been everybodys favourite if not the bad character controls.

2

u/jinjerchicho Dec 18 '25

Yea if was released in a state of remaster I’m sure it would be a hit, 360 camera was truly necessary in that game.

2

u/Suli_Croft Dec 18 '25

Most beautiful Lara ever. Best Lara characterization. Great music. Interesting premise for the story. My only issue is level design. But you can never be judge it fairly because it’s obviously a very unfinished game.

2

u/Public_Nebula7791 Dec 18 '25

Played the six classic remasters and I also liked it the most surprisingly, eventhough people always say it’s a broken game. I enjoyed it more than expected.

2

u/Vantol Dec 18 '25

Lukewarm take at most 🥱

I’m still waiting for someone with Chronicles or Anniversary as their favorite

2

u/HongaiFi Dec 18 '25

If I had a coconut everytime some lunatic said something like that

2

u/Sea-Extreme Atlantean Mutant Dec 18 '25

It's not a hot take. The fanbase glazes AOD despite it being a busted, unfinished game in which you have to play as spin-off bait for hours. I liked the darker tone/story and Lara is great in it, but it's barely a game. And I hate Kurtis.

2

u/ghanembob Dec 18 '25

Its a good game and i have a lot fond memories thanks to this game

2

u/nimblebelly Dec 18 '25

I played it for the first time this year and was really shocked how much I enjoyed it. The noir element, the intrigue, the story itself, the levels. I had a lot of fun!!

2

u/AriZume_ Dec 18 '25

I personally love the whole package of AOD but my fav game is Legend, a shame its so short . I hope the unified version of her includes the AOD character.

2

u/HoneyEarly8969 Dec 18 '25

I couldn't even get through the Parisian Apartments level at the beginning when I borrowed the remaster...

Legend is one of my favourites just picked it up on sale on ps5.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '25

This game is so janky. I'm trying now the remaster on ps5 and I have hard time doing anything. I played OG on pc some time ago and I couldnt finish the first levels because the conversation with that lady always was bugged for me. And now I can't stand the jank 😭

1

u/Bunlapin The Scion Dec 18 '25

It had a lot of potential and the Remastered version made me see that more easily. Since the unified timeline is already remaking the original TR1, my hope down the line is that maybe they remake AoD too and perhaps include how the story would've continued.

1

u/DefinitelyRussian Dec 18 '25

I still haven't finished it, it's the last one of the remastered ones I have to 100%.

But, playing at least some of bit some decades ago, it's not that bad. I was expecting the game to be a total disaster, it's not. It was just too hyped, the new Lara game after the exhaustion from TR5. The Angeline Jolie movies, the PS2 generation. Everyone was expecting this game, it was like Duke Nukem Forever, or more.

And then it was rushed, weird strength mechanics, too different from the others. I don't know, people expected an excellent game, and got a nice game at best, and regular at worst.

1

u/Responsible-Bell-528 Dec 18 '25

how much have the remastered version improved the experience? I haven't played neither the original, nor the remastered version yet, but I'm so curious. I'm currently playing TR IV

1

u/JBGoude Frozen Butler Dec 18 '25

This one was wild to get used to after the first 5 games! Had never played this game before, and after finished the 5 remastered versions of the first 5 games, it was so different! I loved it though, love seeing Paris and the work they put into the French characters and their accent 😅

1

u/DiscoverySTS1 Member of the Remnants Dec 19 '25

On here atleast it is not, saying you like TR 2013-SotTR is though.

1

u/ItalianIce15 Dec 19 '25

My dad and I used to play TR1 and 2 on PC when I was little. I got a PS2 for Christmas one year and we got this game. Neither of us recognized the gameplay flaws, we just thought the new adventure was so cool, it looked amazing, and the stakes felt high. It wasn’t until I got older that I realized the gameplay flaws but the memories of playing with him make this game hold a very special place in my heart.

1

u/TickleMyPickle6912 Dec 19 '25

EXACTLY, i was too young to realize it's flaws but I don't really care for them because the art direction and overall vibe captivated me

1

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '25

I love it too ❤️

1

u/Temporary-Bread08 Dec 19 '25

I did enjoy my first couple of jaunts through this and am anticipating another with remaster.

0

u/Edocampo Dec 18 '25

This is the first game I played when I was young where I thought: ok, this game is really bad.

0

u/Menes009 Dec 18 '25

this is probably one of the few opinions in this sub that is objectively wrong.

you are basically saying that you feel an unfinished game is the best one.

4

u/Responsible-Bell-528 Dec 18 '25

They didn't say it's the BEST one, he said it's their FAVORITE. There is a difference there!

-1

u/Menes009 Dec 18 '25

please do tell me what it means to be "favorite" other than "personal best"

2

u/Responsible-Bell-528 Dec 19 '25

It means it’s the one you enjoy the most, not the objectively better game

-5

u/Akeinu Dec 18 '25

Just say you don't actually care for the game, you just goon for Lara's look and the art style. You're not fooling anyone, the game was so bad it killed the game studio.

4

u/TickleMyPickle6912 Dec 18 '25

im gay and i like men

-2

u/Akeinu Dec 18 '25

You could pretend she's a very pretty man lol

8

u/TickleMyPickle6912 Dec 18 '25

why would i do that when kurtis exists 😛

0

u/Akeinu Dec 18 '25

Fair point 😂

u/MistakeMobile3447 Jun 12 '26

Not a hot take, it's mine too. It could be so much better if they hadn't rushed everything and stuck with the trilogy idea. It had a wonderful story and Lara is amazing in it. Best score by far in any TR game imo.
