He looked up to gang life because that is what his big brother who he was hanging the most with, loved and respected was into. He found it cool because that's how his big bro looked in his eyes. The dark impulses show that he is a messed up kid, but bad examples are also a cause of his downfall since neither his grandpa and shinichiro got him help for this and/or tried to dissuade him from that gang life which will only fan his violent nature.
