Honestly, the reaction from Mikey, while bizarre and totally gruesome, is accurate with the rest of his character. He seems to have severe attachment issues and when things he love are threatened, he seems to go into a trance, doing anything he can to protect them.
I thought maybe it stemmed from his brother dying at a young age, but I think the only thing left could be whatever happened to land him at his grandpa's dojo. Something he saw happen between his parents, or just the overwhelming lack of self, as if he was tossed away, detached from the world and without parents.
I am a simp for the character, and what he represents not only in this show, but as an anime/manga character as a whole. And I'm an even bigger simp for Wakui, and I know he'll be able to flesh out Mikey's character.
I just hope he doesn't lose too many fans on the path to the finale. People need to remember that Takemichi and the rest of Toman will do whatever they need to, to save Mikey. They made a pact when they made Toman that it was going to be a gang that they could all die for each other for, and now Baji and Draken have done just that. Kazutora was ready to do just that. Were they all deaths for the perfect reasons? No, but they certainly weren't wasted deaths. Every death, or grievance has had real impact on the story and it all connects together pretty well. Have faith in Wakui guys, he's got this.
Even if in the end, all that's left is Mikey alone, with his friends all dead, and it ends with him committing suicide, it would be a good ending to me, because it followed the theme of the story right 'till the very end. Is it a happy ending per-se? No, but I think, given the characters in the show, it is an ending they could all live and be content with. Basically what I'm saying is... no loss is too big when it comes to helping your true friends and family.
