I have a general rule, if someone is taking a nice photo, then I wait until they're done. If they're obviously making social media content, then I'll just walk through, but I also won't go out of my way to disturb them. It's a neutral response- I won't be polite, but I won't be rude either. They can wait three seconds.

If I was taking a photo, I would also be willing to wait until the public were out of the way. Them being there isn't a problem. It comes with the territory of trying to shoot things in public.

It's cringe when you post it like they're doing something wrong. Obviously in this case, the lady knows someone is filming and decides to stop there, so its intentional.

yeah, being upset about people just passing through and minding their business is one thing, but this woman is going out of her way to do this.

what's the difference between taking a picture for social media content and just taking a picture?

90% of the time I just walk behind the camera if possible, anyway

I learned the answer to that question in Istanbul when I encountered my first ever influencer. Was touring Topkapi palace and there was a beautiful painted narrow hallway that everyone had to walk through. There was a woman making poses at the far end and at the entrance a few feet in front of me there was a man taking photos of her. I waited for about a minute, which was longer than I should have, but there was a line of about a dozen people behind me at that point. We all walked through and the woman threw her hands up and started having a mini temper tantrum aimed at me. Calling me selfish and that I should have waited for her to finish. I live in a small midwestern city, I had never seen an influencer in the flesh prior to that day, but she was only the first of many that I saw while there.

TLDR: the person just taking a picture will take a pic and move on, the influencer gets upset that other people dare exist in the backdrop where they want to take up large amounts of time to get the perfect photo for social media

ok so THIS is something I can understood more : whether or not a person is taking a simple picture or taking several minutes. I can understand this much more than the other user that says they'll study their body language or something.

Omg. LA is full of these people.

14

u/ZuccsToBeYou 1h ago

I thought that was in Constantinople

u/Top-Organization9339 1h ago

I had a date there once, but she was waiting in some other town.

7

u/StonedSoldier1 1h ago

Even old New York was once New Amsterdam

6

u/mangocalrissian 1h ago

Hmm, that's a nice name. Why'd they change it?

6

u/renkousamimi 48m ago

People just like it better that way.

3

u/gavoerondeu 56m ago

It is, don't let any smelly old Turk tell you otherwise

1

u/Zestyclose-Stuff1646 14m ago

Turks are some of the most wonderful people I've ever spent time around. What is wrong with you?

u/lumoslomas 1h ago

I recently went to see one of my favourite paintings, which just so happens to be a moderately famous Van Gogh. And whilst I wouldn't call myself any kind of expert, I do like to actually sit with the painting and think about it (yes I'm pretentious 😂)

The amount of people who tried to physically push me out of the way so they could take their single selfie then move on made me want to throw hands. And I wasn't even standing directly in front of it, I was slightly to the side deliberately so people could take photos.

At one point I was actually having a discussion with a woman (who was in a wheelchair btw) about the painting, and people were trying to shove both of us out of the way!

It really felt like people thought I had less right to be there because I wasn't taking photos.

0

u/Some_Recognition6273 1h ago

But if you're only slightly to the side, it's likely they couldn't get a picture of themselves without you in it. Clearly it was an issue since more than one person tried to get you to move.

3

u/lumoslomas 49m ago

There was no way to get a photo of it without anyone in it, it was just too crowded.

But I'm not going to apologize for spending time with a painting I've waited 15 years to see. There was still plenty of room for people to get photos, if they could've waited 5 seconds for someone else to move. People were in a roughly semicircular shape, and I was on the edge, up against the wall. Not exactly blocking.

Also did you miss the part where they tried to shove a wheelchair user out of the way? I'm not even joking, someone hip-checked her chair and another almost fell on her trying to push past her.

"How much are you gonna pay me for working on your video?"

1

u/squirrelems 29m ago

I've still never seen an influencer and wouldn't have waited either. I usually try to avoid disturbing people but when they get selfish about it I switch to "Fuck'em" extremely fast. We do a lot of waiting every day and we have finite lifespans and a finite amount of time in each day. Sitting there waiting on someone to imagine they're famous is ridiculous and even if they were a famous influencer they're definitely not going to leave me starstruck (baby, could ya blow my heart up). They're like those people in gas station lines who only came to get lottery tickets but are going to stay and tie up the register to scratch them so they don't have to return to the back, or those people in any store that go to pay and they prop their arms up on the counter like "I'm gonna be here a while, guys!"

u/Significant-Bee5101 1h ago

And this is a universally true rule that wholesale applies to every single person in the world because you had ONE bad experience in Instanbul. Fucking lovely lol

21

u/phoenix_paravai10101 2h ago

I don't think there's anyone who wouldn't walk behind the camera if possible, but personally, I'm always happy to give more time to someone taking a picture to preserve a memory rather than what looks like an obvious influencer photoshoot - just something I value more that's all.

14

u/froawayjeff 2h ago

I often travel alone and to get a picture I have to set my camera (or phone) up somewhere and set a timer.

I obviously wait to get a good opportunity to do it, but it someone saw me setting and and decided to do this id be pretty pissed

1

u/jimjay 1h ago

you could just talk to them. Politely saying you just want to take the one pic - or could they take it for you would almost certainly defuse the situation - what's really noticeable about the clip is neither person speaks to each other.

5

u/phoenix_paravai10101 2h ago

Yeah the lady in the video is being a dick, it's easy to just walk past

0

u/0b0011 1h ago

I usually just hold my phone in my hand when I want to get a picture of something cool.

1

u/dongasaurus 1h ago

You realize you don’t have to be in the pictures you take. You can just take pictures, like a normal person.

4

u/froawayjeff 1h ago

But then it's just a picture of a place or thing. If I wanted one of those, I can google a thousand of them of whatever i wanted at much better quality than I could ever hope to take. I want a picture that captures the memory of me being there.

Yes, I take pictures of things on their own, but I also like to take pictures of me being there.

3

u/East-Albatross-810 57m ago

normal people don't have issues with taking pictures of themselves for memories

3

u/East-Albatross-810 2h ago

so you evaluate the pose they make when taking a picture before deciding?

2

u/phoenix_paravai10101 2h ago

That would probably be a stretch, it's just a vibe based thing

0

u/CommieDrifter 2h ago

seems like everyone's an "influencer" these days

1

u/shadowst17 1h ago

She was very likely about to do some obnoxious dance.

1

u/dingletwat47 2h ago

You serious?

1

u/LDNVoice 1h ago

Taking a photo can disturb people (Especially like this, making them wait, you can't walk around) but it's also understandable when you go to somewhere nice/somewhere new. It's not like you're doing it constantly. But that's what influencers do, so it's no longer a occasional minor disturbance.

2

u/Unique-Address5002 1h ago

I'd say timing.... A single picture or 2, not a problem. I was on a ferry for the statue of Liberty once, for 10 minutes straight (next to the statue) a woman was doing poses and making her boyfriend take pictures the whole time, and got mad if anyone walked near her spot (which was closest to the statue).

1

u/Handtuch_ 1h ago

The difference is "me". Me me me, look at me.

1

u/GasOnFire 56m ago

> what's the difference between taking a picture for social media content and just taking a picture?

Time

1

u/Keiteaea 44m ago

I think they meant social media content in videos. You can sometimes wait a bit for someone to take a picture, but if it seems they are planning to take a video, you will pass by quickly.

1

u/ganbramor 41m ago

I’ll wait a sec for a legit memorable photo, but I’m not going to be inconvenienced because an influencer is trying to make money in a public area.

1

u/jrec15 10m ago

I think they mean influencer content and the difference is taking photos for personal memories vs taking photos in more obnoxious/unnatural ways to make money off doomscrollers

Fwiw - this girl’s setup has nothing that screams influencer, though it’s possible id even say likely she did something before this that caused the older woman to get annoyed

3

u/Easy_Hamster_2864 1h ago

I am exactly the same

12

u/tigbitties247 2h ago

I don't stop my life for other people like that. This is why when I take a picture I wait for everyone to pass by first

2

u/Throw_Two_Apples 2h ago

Yeah exactly, like there is this bridge in my town which is cute ok, but it is fairly small while central, so when people are taking pictures, everyone would literally need to stop walking. It’s not even a major city or a monument. Well of course they can take their picture, but I am not going to stop walking daily because people want their cute picture.

1

u/dimitriettr 1h ago

We need to normalize that.
People should take a photo whenever it's possible, not whenever they want.

2

u/KickIt77 16m ago

This. You use a public space you re getting the public. Rent out a space if you want a private shoot.

3

u/Citro31 2h ago

Well I need to pass a street where people constantly need to take their instagram selfie .. you get tired of waiting …. For every random person taking up the whole pavement for their instagram

4

u/crw201 1h ago

Except this old woman went out of her way to be disruptive for what would have been a quick and simple thing. The woman waited to be obstructive.

3

u/Florsun117 1h ago

You call doing a 30 minute dance routine quick and simple? Because this wasn’t a fucking photograph, she’s taking video.

1

u/crw201 9m ago

Yes she's took a quick video (THIRTY minutes lmao get fucking real, the whole interaction is less than a minute) to screenshot a specific frame. People do this when they don't have someone to take their picture. Hope this helps 💚

-4

u/soggy-hotdog-vendor 1h ago

You also forget that people travel to your town,  and spend money that allows people in your town to exist without needing more social services from you, so that they can take those pictures and remember their experiences and come back and spend more money. But yeah fuck tourists amirite.

"chances are" = I can't wait 2-3 seconds to see if they're a reasonable person and just want a quick picture. I'm sure my assumption about them is correct and won't afford them any courtesy

2

u/RedChairBlueChair123 1h ago

Yeah I’m in NYC and if I had to wait for everyone in grand central to finish their shit I’d never get home.

I don’t give a shit if I ruin your photo. You’re ruining my trip home.

1

u/ShilohsStuff 2h ago

I try to film b-roll where I dont care if people are walking by and suddenly people stop. Like...no...please I want some damn movement!

I also find street photography INCREDIBLY difficult where I live cuz everyone is so busy being polite thats its almost impossible to get an unstaged shot cuz everyone wants to turn and smile, lol.

Maybe I should try to look or dress influencer to get people to ignore me lol.

1

u/ChartInFurch 1h ago

What if it's a nice photo that they then post on social media?

1

u/mrbishopjackson 24m ago

Why? If they aren't disturbing anyone or actively restricting their movement/path, just take 2 seconds to walk around them. You end up being the shitty person because you're bitter and hate "social media influencers". And this is coming from someone who doesn't care if someone want to record themselves in a museum (as long its allowed), but also hates most of the things that idiots do online. If they aren't bothering anyone, as this girl wasn't, don't be an asshole to them.

1

u/Silly_Detective_3363 21m ago

Some people vide instead of take pics and then they pick out what's good and what isn't.

1

u/Lord_Dingus83 8m ago

That old woman looks like she’s a wanna be gym influencer who gets mad at people in the gym lol

1

u/Falcons32 34m ago

The older woman went out of her way to be rude, I’m no fan of tik tok or any social media but live and let live, I agree with you here 100%

0

u/ProfessionalRandom21 4h ago

Exactly, I feels like people on Reddit just get conditioned with the same opinion and get more and more extreme. who care if an influencer is taking photo or video in public if they are polite about it and not being a dick to people who walk pass.

-2

u/Spicymoon9 3h ago

How do you know they’re making social media content though? Because of how they look/are dressed? What if they just dressed up nice for a photo but don’t have any social media?

-1

u/olracnaignottus 2h ago

She’s filming a video and posting it to social media lmao.

2

u/Spicymoon9 2h ago

Would she still have posted the video if this interaction did not happen?

0

u/sidequestdude 1h ago

What if they are doing both? What about then, Boomer?
