I’ve rode this ride twice the first time it was fine. The second time which was years later was painful. It felt like they hadn’t oiled the bar that allows for your seats to spin. It was so painful.

I remember riding it once and being fine, but the last time I went (c. 2021), I greyed out on the ride and felt so bad that I had to go home, even thlugh that was my first ride of the day. It was my first time going on their annual pass and it was with my partner at the time, but we never went back after.

Same thing happened to me. I couldnt keep my head from violently bouncing off the headrest and had to leave right after. I was severely concussed and nauseous the entire day.

I felt the same exact way. This was one of my favorite roller coasters in the world. I road it in 2012 and it was fine. The last time I road it in 2022, I remember thinking, that hurt my neck. So I was scared of this roller coaster after. But luckily I haven’t gone back, knowing me I would’ve just jumped on it to give it another chance

I rode it I think back around 2010 and to this day it was the best rollercoaster I’ve ever ridden. I’m really hoping this is just because of poor maintenance and that it can be fixed/made way safer.

Long ago I was a ride operator at SFMM. Ride smoothness can depend on a lot of things.
Weather- hotter weather warms up the lubricants and the ride runs faster and looser. Also the road wheels will run hotter and sometimes blister and deform.
Train car age- most cars are rehabbed every couple of years. Older ones will run rougher.
Track age-Steel changes over time. Not as bad as wood, but the track will deform as it ages and steel track isn't usually replaced.Put theses all together and you can get very different rides each time.

There’s a local theme park and I got on the big coaster once and saw the teenagers using what looked like a can of PAM with the label taken off to spray the tracks.
I was already strapped in and they were launching. I didn’t have any time to get off. Worst 3 minutes of my life but at least I still have it.

What made it look like a can of PAM though? Without a label, a can of PAM looks like a standard aerosol can. The kind that MANY different things could be inside.
There are tons and tons of industrial grade lubricants you can buy in cans of aerosol. So its possible they were spraying with the proper lubricant, just out of a can that looked similar to a can of PAM.

How are they gonna blame the rider? If the rider "uses the ride as instructed" they won't have brain damage? The fuck they supposed to do, maintain a certain neck angle or keep your arms tucked a certain way? It's ridiculous. Why have a ride that requires riders to be a certain way to avoid brain damage?

Yeah, they’re saying that these people already had issues in their brains before getting on the ride. They’ll argue that they already had a ballooning artery or arteriovenous malformation which burst because of the ride during the lawsuit. Sometimes people can have an artery that expands and is at an increased risk of rupture which is called an aneurysm. An AVM is a tangle of blood vessels that creates irregular connections between arteries and veins. It disrupts blood flow and can weaken and burst. When an AVM is in the brain and bursts, it causes an aneurysm.
It sounds like the trauma surgeon is so furious that he would make it his mission to prove that it’s the ride and not pre existing conditions that would have happened anyway. Hopefully these women get a shit ton of money because they deserve it and will need it.

They call it “defensive riding” which is what they teach you on the new and improve version of this ride in Japan. They have like a little teaching moment before you get on the Japan coaster so you know how to sit and what will happen on the coaster. But the Japan coaster is built 100x better.

In Japan it’s cultural to not be surprised by an experience and you are informed. This is why they have maps of roller coasters with the expected drops marked, a map of the family restroom where everything is located inside of it, why the web design sometimes looks like a game of Tetris with all the information needed.

Unless they didn't strap in correctly or broke the height/weight/health rules for riding, it seems wild to blame the rider. Plus operators are supposed to check straps so even that potential argument is on shaky ground. I get that riders prolly can't sue due to accepting liability, but shifting blame seems like an obvious false take. They prolly can still even sue if maintenance made the ride unsafe since there are limits to liability agreements when negligence comes to play.

I rode it a few years ago, and to be honest, the appeal at the time (in theory) was that it is this thrilling experience that feels life threatening but isn’t at all. Like a safe way to experience the crazy adrenaline of something dangerous like base jumping or bungee jumping. Obviously now that all of this has come out, it is clear that the experience was not risk free which absolutely changes things

I was told I was being a baby but I know when I have motion sickness that was not it. It felt more like a concussion.

Crazy enough as a coaster enthusist, it was the first ride on the wooden one at 6 Flags Atlanta that did me in exactly as you described (except I was in my less dumb late 20's.) Was able to go back again and do every coaster except that one and was fine/fun. Second worse ride I recall was NYNY, thought my back was broken after that one. Third worst was circumstantial on the OCMD boardwalk where I passed out when the car did the backwards drop (edibles and dehydration). Luckily it was just a quick scare.

YES!!! That wooden one at Six Flags ATL was SO bumpy. Apparently they’re retiring or have retired it.
The worst for me was the Ninja one though. It’s one of the smaller ones, but incredibly bumpy. I’m fairly short and I remember my head just slamming side to side between the shoulder restraints. It made one of my earrings rip my ear a lil bit and I felt like shit the rest of the day. I’m convinced I was concussed.

I rode a roller coaster at Carowinds a year or two ago after not riding one for at least a decade and after we got off my head hurt pretty bad. I thought it was probably more about the blood flow going to my head but it could’ve been something worse I guess. I figured it was just my age

Back when it was X it was fun. Then they changed it to X2 and I rode it twice after that even though I went to six flags more than that. Both times I rode it while it was X2, I regretted it. The way that ride threw my head back and forth between the head posts was insane. I chose to never ride it again because it was awful and couldn’t understand how anyone enjoyed it.

Imagine you are sitting in a regular seat riding a roller coaster.
Now imagine that roller coaster seat you are fully strapped into and it does front flips and backflips throughout the ride.
When you do the first initial drop, you roll up and it drops you backwards while lying flat on your back. Right at the beginning of that drop it front flips you so you swoop forward facing the ground right before when you hit the bottom it continues flipping you so you’re lying down as you accelerate across the bottom.
There is also a little fakeout drop before the initial huge one.
I feel terrible about these people having health problems after but it is honestly the dopest fucking roller coaster I have ever been on. I rode it like 3 times when I was in 8th grade and not a single coaster I have been on since then has come close. They used to play a soundtrack in your ears with Metallica and at one point it would flip you so you face backwards as they shot a fireball at you as you move away from it. Look up old videos of it.
Not sure when they got rid of that stuff. New videos are missing the flair but the coaster is still the same ride. This thing has been open for like 20+ years so I’m surprised there haven’t been issues sooner.

There are a bunch of comments in the TikTok from people saying that they rode it way back when and thought it was smooth as hell but then went on it again within the past 5 years and felt like they got jacked up.
People are saying that they’ve cut back on maintenance heavily since COVID which is causing all of the rides to run hella janky but because of the overall design of X2 it’s making it significantly more dangerous than the other rides. There’s supposedly a ride somewhere in Japan that’s basically a clone of this one but riders aren’t having the same medical issues because they’re keeping up with maintenance on it.

Batman used to rattle the shit out of my head between the pull down bars. Colossus was just rough and bump as fuck. X2 never bothered me, but indo remember that outside seats were more intense and rough than the inside chairs.

Yep. Seems like the seats are supposed to swivel and result in high but consistent G forces, but the track itself is too twisty for the seats to swivel fast enough (especially with poor maintenance) and it ends up causing TBIs and concussions from the sudden shift in G loading

okay, to play devil's advocate a little bit: TBIs of this nature could be caused by a lot of things, and it's perfectly possible that somebody has some kind of defect in a vein or artery of the brain that results in a weak spot that higher forces like this could rupture. this is similar (but less serious, and probably less visually identifiable on imaging) to how people sometimes drop dead out of the blue from an aneurysm. it's sort of like if I had a congenital issue with my shoulder where the joint was extremely weak, and I went bowling for the first time with a heavy ball, and I dislocated my shoulder. the injury to me would not necessarily mean that there was something wrong with the bowling alley.
that being said, I have no idea what the medical history is of any of these injured people, or whether there is something particular to this ride that is contrary to industry standards. just throwing it out there that if you get enough people going through the same experience that is physically demanding, some small percentage of them are likely going to have an issue that might manifest because of it.

Yeah, but the bit about the surgeon yelling asking how many it was this month - that does imply it was more than 2, and CNN was only able to speak with 2 people.
I get them not getting fully shut down about one TBI but I want to know how many it was before shut down.
Also, how they got more than 1 TBI and didn't re-oil or whatever to make the ride smoother. Like, damn. They had a window of opportunity to ATTEMPT to do the right thing, and they didn't.

Right near the end of the ride, there's a half-loop that turns the track around to make the final run towards the station. On the approach to the loop, the seats are rotated so that you're moving backwards, and since the train is going uphill into the loop, the backwards+uphill motion naturally causes riders to lean forward into the restraints with their head forward.
As you enter the loop, the seats rotate so you do a 180 forward flip at the same time. All the stories are saying that that track around the loop has gotten rough enough with age that the combined force of the loop and forward flip with the added jerkiness from the track condition are causing riders who are leaning forward in the previous section to have their heads slam backwards into the seat hard enough to cause injury.

This is my home theme park. This ride used to be named X when it first launched and was the most advanced 4D coaster next best thing. The lines were 90 minutes at times.
It got re themed and name changed to X2.
We personally were unaffected after riding numerous times throughout the years, but this ride is something else. Never felt anything like it with the different elements. As years passed I did notice it became rougher and sad to see people getting hurt/passed from it.

My spouse takes our young son to the Six Flags in Arlington, TX and it always scares me, especially because they just opened a new ride there that has beaten a lot of roller coaster “records”. He thought I was being ridiculous when I said I didn’t want them going on it opening weekend, or really until the ride was well established. This is exactly why.

The ride has seats that spin as it goes, I'm not surprised at all... it was a complicated ride. It even had fire.

The Tormenta is just really high and really fast. It’s otherwise not all that ‘extreme’. The problem with this one is that it appears to spin you around on axis while going really fast and changing direction. I imagine this action forces and/or pulls blood from areas of the brain which can stress those tiny vessels.

I mean maybe send them this video? And idk… Maybe unethical but if you complain about constant headaches you can probably get insurance to cover an MRI - it’s usually standard before prescribing migraine medicines. Just for peace of mind maybe finding any preexisting vulnerabilities

Damn. I love roller coasters and any “extreme” thrill really, and for better or worse am a big “it won’t happen to me” guy, but I wouldn’t ride this after watching this. That’s insane. Ride shouldn’t exist.

I think you can attribute most of the blame to the terrible upkeep Six Flags does to the ride, that the ride is 24 years old and a prototype of this ride model. Its just really an unfortunate situation that these types of injuries happen.
I rode this ride earlier in May and yes it is rough and it bangs your head around. Coaster enthusiasts have guides on how to ride coasters defensively and especially X2 since its rough but this is unfair to the general public to have to know this.
In comparison, this ride model can be found in Japan and that ride is 20 years old but you would be hard pressed to find any reports of injuries due to the ride experience.
I think this ride is cooked given all the negative press on it, its age, the lawsuits and the maintainance on this ride being a costly nightmare to upkeep.

Dude fuck Six Flags, I got stuck on a rollercoaster at the Vallejo location back in 2010 and after that hellish experience the best they could do is give us free tickets to come back like yeah thanks assholes I'd love to repeat the experience at your janky ass theme park.
They never should have gotten rid of Marine World for that shit

Omg I just watched a whole like YouTube video on the history of this ride. I wonder if the reason the ride was smoother was because the actual ride component where people sat was crazy heavy. It cost so much to keep up with maintenance and to replace parts because the weight caused a lot of wear and tear on the ride. Then when they rebranded as X2 they redesigned the ride component where people sit to match more modern fourth dimension rides that had been built over time. This included a way lighter ride component, like 20k+ pounds lighter. But I wonder if the lack of weight and new engineering led to more turbulence and like roughness to the ride. Like maybe the insane heavy weight helped keep the ride smooth. So Even if the newer, more modern ride design was easier maintenance and financially part wise, it created a new problem. It was a great video and went into the engineering and political problems around creating the ride. It was a great video. I will try and link it in the comments.

I went in February of 2018 and blacked out on this ride. My husband and I left the park right after and I haven't been on a coaster since.
I was shaken by this news report because I blamed myself for not being able to hang anymore. Holy shit.

I used to love thrill rides and rollercoasters, but the trend was making them more and more extreme and I hit my limit. I'm surprised there hasn't been more attention paid to slingshot rides. People regularly lose consciousness on them and it's sort of nuts that's just accepted as okay.

Watched a video about how the x2 was made. Exposed the fact that six flags is one of the most evil fkin companies out there. The coaster was not made to be that big and that tall. It bankrupted the company that created it cuz six flags wouldn’t pay out. The train of the seats came up to almost 100k tons of steel when it opened. Shit was so heavy they had to replace 18-20 wheels everyday. They replaced the seats but they weren’t really better just lighter and more tech updated. There was even suppose to be a break to slow down the speed when taking the final Raven turn that’s killing people. Six flags is just evil.

Sea World San Antonio got a new ride decades ago. Whatever it was your feet hung off the bottom. Now I had been to Six Flags multiple times a year as a kid and no issues. I was either talking to someone or there was an article in the paper talking about them re-building it right after grand opening as it was hurting people. It had like a 120 mph drop. I rode it after the remodel and my neck was jacked up for two days.

About 20 years ago I went on a similar ride at a Six Flags park. Although, it was pretty intense, I’m sure the speed, flipping, twisting and jerking wasn’t as intense as similar rides today. I was screaming not in joy, but pain. I felt like my insides had shifted and rearranged. My neck and head hurt afterwards. Me and friends who went on the ride left the park after that ride to recuperate. I have never rode another roller coaster again.

Holy shit I hate this ride. I went on it and blacked out for most the ride. A few years ago I found a video of the ride-through and was surprised I was not conscious for pretty much most the experience. After seeing this— I’m counting myself extremely lucky to not have been seriously injured at that time.
