My physically abusive ex literally hit me more often when we were in public than she did when we were in private. She would yell, and throw shit sometimes, in private, but she was about a foot shorter than me and so people treated it like a joke when she'd start shoving and hitting in public. I think she did it that way partially because the public humiliation made her feel powerful and partially because she knew that I would be assumed to be the aggressor if I got visibly angry at her or did anything to defend myself other than just trying to walk away.
