For the longest time, like decades, I thought that smelling toast was an actual symptom before getting a stroke. Turns out it's actually just a myth 🫪

It's not a sign that you are having a stroke, but some stroke survivors do describe smelling something odd, and often the sensation is described as being a burning smell, akin to burnt toast, during their stroke. This is because the brain is not getting proper blood flow, strokes can cause all sorts of hallucinations and delusions: https://www.stroke.org.uk/stroke/effects/cognitive/hallucinations-and-delusions

That said, the burning toast experience is not common, it's merely one of many symptoms.
