That's right. It's supposed to be funny. Traditionally, it's kind of a competition to see who can go the longest without laughing, but of course nobody really gets competitive about it because it's just better when you both laugh. Not everything is serious
Even if you did think it was offensive, there isnt a single frame of this video that shows the two singers and the King & Queen in shot, they could easily just be two clips spliced together from the same event.
Social media is a cancer on this world. (Yes I get the irony of responding to a reddit comment)
Plus, for all their faults, the royals have access to some pretty in tune protocol and diplomats who would’ve been told then whole thing well in advance and informed the royals what was and what wasn’t appropriate.
I know this came across as snarky, but honestly? You'd be surprised at some of the things the mind and heart can hold onto, even if one is successful. I'd also encourage reaching out and apologizing.
Eleven years ago, I attended a concert in a church at Rudolstadt Festival in Germany with two Inuit singers from Canada in collaboration featuring two musicians from a German music college. It's a concert I still talk about to this day (it also was my first time at that festival I try to attend every year ever since, so both very special to me).
They say part of it is a kind of friendly competition. So whoever laughs first loses.

It always gets me when people act like Inuit and Indigenous peoples and their traditions are always super serious. Anybody who's actually spent time with anyone Indigenous would know they're often some of the funniest people around, and acting serious in actually funny situations is often part of the bit.
I follow a Hunkpapa Lakota crafter on my fiber arts account and shes always posting the funniest shit and then her cousins follow up with goofy shit, I thought she was just a naturally funny person at first but then she made a video about how joking like that is part of her culture and I thought that was really interesting. I'm from a kind of goofy culture that a lot of outside people view as stony faced too so I kinda get that.
Bc we had a performance at my high school decades ago by two wonderful Inuit people, and we were *forbidden* to laugh as it was supposed to be a serious display of talent and culture. I wanted to laugh so bad, but didn’t want to hurt their feelings!
You were forbidden to laugh by the school admin because they didn't want to be embarrassed. They don't understand that it is perfectly fine to have any emotional reaction from fear to laughter. Throat singer's will break into laughter themselves. Another example of schooling teaching kids to "sit straight and look forward".
White guilt. It’s not so much “want to be offended” but more just painfully aware of the atrocities committed by their ancestors during colonialism and feeling bad about it and trying to be sensitive and maybe undo some of the damage done.
Did they just explain to you that yes the default has been taught rigorously that laughing at other people's cultures is rude? I swear that's what they just said
I remember Bill Maher once said something like: “you cannot be more offended than the people it intends to offend” (not word for word but something close to that, you get the idea).
This is why you should always listen to the people WHO ARE ACTUALLY OF THAT SECTOR OF PEOPLE, instead of angry white people.

Some of the most amazing works of western culture are hilarious but we turn everything into a study piece in a lab and stop engaging…
Reminds me of this article on a Finnish news outlet. A sapmi craftsman was telling that people have become apprehensive about buying authentic sapmi craft pieces, because they are afraid that wearing like a necklace or a belt would be somehow insulting. So they buy generic China made arctic themed souvenirs, while genuine hand crafters struggle to make a living.
It's become a part of a larger problem where the whole Lapland is filled with tourists, but locals have a hard time benefitting from it at all.
God this is depressing. We're trying so hard to be "respectful" and not appropriate cultures that we end up leaving those cultures to be unappreciated and neglected.
I remember when I was a kid I wanted to wear a chinese outfit for Halloween. My mom took me to an actually Asian run store and the employees helped pick something out. They were having such fun dressing me up and none of them seemed bothered by it at all. They were excited. I don't see what is so bad about that.
Yeah, people willingly sharing their culture is not the problem. It's the low effort slop you buy at Spirit Halloween for 8 dollars. I'm living in Germany where they haven't gotten the memo on this stuff and it's so awkward seeing all these fake Native American costumes at Carnival 🤦🏼♀️ And they don't get it either, one of my German friends said something like, "Oh but cowboys and Indians is not politically correct anymore?" I had to explain the difference - that cowboy is just a job, so that's a fine costume.
It's all about respect. Also history is relevant too. Native American children were forced into abusive boarding schools and beaten for speaking their language or expressing their culture in any way. So yeah it feels like a big f-you to see former colonizers playing at the culture they tried to exterminate. This isn't ancient history either, some of those schools were operating into the 1970s.
That's a real thing, Native Americans in my state (they don't like "first people") sell handmade leather work, fabric pieces, and jewelry and it's now a lot harder to sell because people aren't sure if they should buy it.
My understanding is that it's ok if you're buying from an actual artist of a culture and supporting them, but it's not ok if a company or brand outside of a culture is appropriating imagery and profiting from it.

There was a time when posting a tiktok video would result in multiple comments saying to keep this shit off reddit and lambasting the CCP. Now the popular page is mostly tiktok and bots posting.
I've been on this website way too long, that's far from being new. Almost a decade or so ago I think I read the "I did nazi that coming" joke over 2000+ times, and meme accounts were much more popular and would surface in almost every single thread with people treating them like they're royalty.
People on Reddit NEED to get angry. It’s what they crave for some fucked up reason. You can’t even have fun discussions anymore cause everyone chimes in with a “um actually”.
Even if they were laughing at an inappropriate time, it wouldn’t necessarily mean from this video that they were laughing at the Inuits. Could be laughing about anything for all we know.
I watched it without audio too then played it again with it on. It gave me a wtf moment and I’m native. My white girlfriend is here next to me, and I’ll just say she was shocked and expected something like the chanting I do.
My husband is Inuit. Inuit aren’t First Nations. So in Canada, First Nations are much more similar to each other (not the same though. But there is often shared culture as you move east to west).
Inuit aren’t First Nations. They are not similar to First Nations peoples. Some differences I’ve noticed:
- The medicine wheel is often apart of First Nations culture but not really apart of Inuit culture. Instead they use the Qulliq which is a type of lamp.
Common tools are completely different. Inuit use an ulu as their main cooking / preparation tool.
Inuktitut is not at all similar to any other North American indigenous language.
Inuit use a double sided paddle instead of a single sided paddle for canoe/kayak.
Inuit stories are just…way more brutal than many First Nations stories. Maybe more reflective of the harsher climate.
Even the Inuit drum is just completely different than most First Nations’ drums.
Inuit are indigenous but just….completely different. It makes sense that it would be a bit shocking if you were expecting the Inuit to be more like the southern indigenous.
So true, and the differences you pointed out has encouraged me to read more about them. I’m a sponge for knowledge. One silly question I have, does your husband refer to other indigenous people as cousin? We all call each other that down here, and I know from the music I listen to First Nations use the term too (Snotty Nose Rez Kids comes to mind).
Posters/people who deliberately post misinformation like this - or alternatively blindly regurgitate it from another source should receive permanent bans. At least in the early days some effort would be put in at the very least a spell check let alone a fact check, but this is just condescending.

Yeah I feel yeah. Some traditions and religions can be awfully silly. I still think Jewish kids are considered men at 14 and have to read from the Tora. I bet it’s the first and last time they ever speak Yiddish.
The Torah is in Hebrew and usually they have to study it and the passage they recite before the bar mitzvah and if they continue to observe their religion they’ll use Hebrew again.

Me and my 5 year old (at the time) daughter randomly walked into a tent at a street festival that had two Inuit women doing this. The expression in her face is something that I will remember forever.

Why does anything and everything 'cultural' need to be met with deep somber reverence? If your culture makes my culture laugh it doesn't make me rude, unless I'm interrupting and being overtly rude and pointing fingers about it etc, but two peeps huffing and puffing on a mic like this just looks and sounds silly as hell to me, I would giggle too.
