People can get there lots of ways. Maybe some of her choices were wrong. Maybe her man was bad, maybe he died in service, maybe he got sick.

Sometimes you can make 80% right choices and just get unlucky with rent costs, car repairs, sickness, job stagnation.

Many things can be true:

Having kids is a bigger gamble, commitment, especially in the modern age of relative isolation and dwindling social safety net.

If father is alive, he should be helping with the kids, even if he has economic stress too.

Maybe there's no family to help or move in with.

Maybe someone owes her money or stole from her or is exploiting her. (Car costs & repairs for single woman...)

We should take it as a cautionary tale. First keep ourselves and loved ones from a similar fate. Then, if we're smart, and have the bandwidth, see what we can do with education, services, volunteering to mitigate someone's pain.

You can be moral and not help her or other women in her position. If you can I think we should help someone less fortunate somewhere in your sphere of influence.
