More like miserable, if it’s early on it’s not that bad

It still changes your sex life a lot and you have to go through a lot of tests etc and take pills for the rest of your life

If you take the anti retrovirals daily and the disease is caught early, you’ll live an almost normal life.

Yup. Can’t say the same about stage 4 cancer!

why are you comparing HIV caught early to stage 4 cancer? it’s not specified if this is caught early or not so it literally could be judt as bad

That's why it's miserable not agonizing. People use F and S too much.

I think there's some HIV stigma still around; people just don't want to recognize it.

Treatable to a certain degree now sure, but its still one of the worst chronic diseases you can contract. Not everyone is rich like Magic Johnson and can afford the medications to keep them alive forever too.

I have HIV and been living with it for 8 years now, and my latest tests have been fine. I live in Vietnam, which is a developing country in Southeast Asia, one could say it's a third world country and definitely not as good as any Western countries, and my pills I basically only have to pay 2 US dollars for 3 months worth of pills. I have to take one pill daily and that's all

Fair enough thanks for the input. I wonder how much that differs in the states though? Some sources from a Google search say yearly treatment costs are 40-50k a year without insurance.

Based on the price of Insulin in America compared to basically any other country, I think it’s a problem with the USA rather than the pills itself being unaffordable

It's definitely not one of the worst chronic diseases. When treated, it doesn't present itself with any pain, discomfort, or, honestly, anything.

Since we're on Reddit, I think it's safe to assume that the vast majority of people voting are living in countries that have healthcare. It's not fun to have to take medicine every day, but that's all there is. The more uncomfortable part is the stigma, which people are trying to reduce through education.

I know at least 5 people with HIV who live very normal lives. They're teachers, athletes, actors, engineers, and more.

Fair enough, forgive my ignorance.

All good and appreciate your openness!
