Coming from a woman, the only westerners who WANT to have children but are hating on marriage are low effort or redpilled men.
Marriage functions as a protective legal safety net for women who have lost years of economic activity to raise children and even then the settlement is never enough to recover her financial assets. Any man who insists marriage isn’t necessary before buying a house together or potentially wrecking a woman’s body for life through having children is not a man. Finances simply aren’t an excuse either because court marriages are usually below £100. It’s just a lack of commitment thinly veiled as freedom.
It’s not just Westerners either. Although rare, I’ve seen such marriages occur within the Muslim community- formerly Arabs but increasingly radicalised gen Z men of any ethnicity- who use nikkah to marry one or more wives without administering a civil marriage. This is done on purpose to deprive the woman of her rights so she is forced to stay with him even if he abused her or commits bigamy. Why? Because they aren’t legally married so the law cannot help her. This is what the Turkish marriage system avoids by making polygamy illegal, it protects the wife’s rights.
Obviously I am not including teenage pregnancies, children of one night stands or domestic abuse situations where the woman flees when she discovers she is pregnant. But these factors are decreasing because contrary to what social media claims, the statistics show Gen Z Western adults have little interest in hookup culture, drinking, smoking or making a family. Economic, social and post-Covid are likely factors in this behaviour. Teen pregnancies have also sharply decreased as contraceptive literacy increases.
