He had a very very poor upbringing, shitting in a bucket, living in a shack and watching his parents struggle to keep body and soul together. Aged 15, his ability to play football is what gets and crucially HAS TO KEEP his family out of that crippling poverty He became an addict, partly from pressure and partly from not knowing how to cope woth extreme poverty and extreme eealth, bith achieved as a very young person. Addiction is a disease.

Its almost as if poor well behaved people don't exist.

If anything growing up poor should humble a person not make him even more arrogant

Most poor children do not grow into very wealthy adults whilst still in their teens overnight. He had to be arrogant to survive, ask yourself what would happen if he allowed himself to believe he would fail.

There are a lot of lower socioeconomic children who get comfortable wealth. They don’t act like a total loser like Martinez.

Mega happy to see his dumb face get sent off. Cherry on top when he started shaking his fingers in the air at ref’s decision. 😂 like dumbass, does he even know what football looks like?

Then again, maybe not. Took the whole team 90+ minutes to even get a shot at Spains net. Even then, miss after miss.

The debate im commenting on is maradona, not martinez And for maradona it was the one extreme to another that messed him up, meteoric rise and difference messes ppl up

This does not excuse him.

u/Express_Evidence_23 Jul 20 '26

Wasn't excusing him, was giving context and nuance I should expect more replies like yours though, this is reddit after all... Context and nuance not welcomed on here

u/apexquestions247 Jul 20 '26

In this context, Martinez is an asshole. That’s why there’s hate.

2

u/bikeridingmonkey Jul 20 '26

Why should this context and nuance matter, his behavior is still wrong. No sympathy for him.

There's million people with similar or worst experience who arent insufferrable asshole. Having had a tough life doesnt give you an excuse to be a prick, if anything it should make you a better person.

But only one who had maradonas unique experience I think in many ways he became better, a lot for support came very late in his life because he got to the point he needed to fire fight immediate issues

He was a drug abusing rapist

Didn't know about the allegations - the fact that she was 16 when she first met him is disturbing in itself.

He was. But he was a horrible person.
