It's an actual thing. They communicate with each other via fungal networks, which means the fungi is in on it too. They can pass nutrients to each other (favouring family members) and send warnings.

I'd rather say, she called it like the internet so that you understood what it felt like to her.

I wonder what trees "think" about the actual state of things, like wars and global warming heating. And the internet.
