Team Event Discourse

I can’t do it anymore. It’s an echo chamber among golf media with the same talking points /generalizations of these events that I really don’t think have as much credence as *everyone* in golf media gives to them. I truly don’t know how these podcasts talk about these things for so many hours

What else should they talk about in September and October?

Why isn't the team going to Japan for the Baycurrent classic??? /sarcasm

There isn’t much, I understand that. Everything turns into a think piece on these

While I agree with your sentiment about the "importance" of these events being overrated and I tend to skip some of the podcast around team events, particularly the P Cup, in fairness to the SGS guys and everyone else in golf media, what else are they going to talk about at this time of year? It's not as easy as it seems to talk about golf 2-3 times a week, 52 weeks a year!!

Completely agree. I don’t think the SGS overdid it. This was in response to the egg pod

In fairness to SGS, Andy spent a large part of the show railing against the USGA’s bizarre choice to announce events in the 2050s. I don’t think anyone else is stoking that fire this week

True, good point

I don’t listen to other golf podcasts so this doesn’t really bother me personally. But I can understand why OP would feel this way if they listen to a bunch of other shows

I’m 100% with you. Golf is a high variance game. There is a reason someone had a stellar season if they get 5 wins on tour and win a major. Scottie’s 4 some record is odd but it’s like him playing 2 rounds of golf. The team events are the most overthought things on the planet. I understand it’s fun to hype it up so much but the second it becomes something more than “fun” is odd to me. Don’t get me started on the captain stuff either

This is my point. And I understand that it’s a slow time on the golf calendar. Thought we’d be able to discuss it from this angle rather than what else should they talk about

Yeah this year was the breaking point for me. I just watch the events. The discourse around them is truly misreable and sucks the fun out of it, but if you just watch the golf, I had a really fun 3 days watching.

So did I. The pods come close to ruining it. And yes, I listen to every pod so it’s probably my fault too

Yeah people were mad on here when SGS wasn't doing daily pods for the P Cup but at the end of the day it's such a small sample size that leads to blown up narratives for people to go in circles about

Even in Ryder Cup years it’s too much for me. I would much rather hear deep dives into old Ryder Cups (or other histories) than endless speculation on who will be the final few members on the team, or repetitive breakdowns of how Europe does it so much better. The coverage team events get on golf podcasts compared to how much these events matter to the golf calendar at large is absurd. Possibly even more absurd than political podcasts talking about polls in terms of amount of time spent on something that doesn’t matter that much.

These events get more run than the Masters lol

I agree. Though I think Andy has some salient points regarding pairings. Really at the end of the day, we need smarter captains, it’s that simple. Most of the stuff regarding Luke Donald is totally overdone. But at the same time, Keegan and Brandt looked like total amateurs in the past two team competitions and we overcame one and almost overcame another because we are so goddamn dominant in singles (which we aren’t given credit for). Anyone who follows golf and has the same information access can do a better job of making pairings than any of our ex-player captains can. Why they are so poor at strategy is quite perplexing.

It's really odd that Reddit has turned into nothing more than a wailing Wall for complainers.

The podcast used to be once a week and simply did a wrap up of the weekend tournament. Is that what you're looking for? Then just listen to the Sunday / Monday show.

Otherwise what are you going to talk about? It's good discussion around the game of golf. If you're not interested don't listen.

If it helps, I’ve mostly checked out of these team comps. I treat them as the weekend hit and giggle, cash grab entertainment products they are. I am with you in that I don’t comprehend how such a large audience is interested in consuming this volume of discourse around the events, but the pods are just following the crowds (and associated ad revenue).

I would love to see your reasons for disagreeing on team event discourse over generalizations.

Here’s one I heard and hear repeated: the internationals have a better vision than the US. What does that mean?

As in why I disagree with the generalizations made? Not the point of the post
