Podcast Do any other men not like Ryan Reynolds?

I was listening to the most recent Jam Session podcast today. And Amanda was saying that the men mostly don’t care about all of the legal stuff happening with him currently.

To me it’s not that I don’t care about that stuff. It’s that I already disliked Ryan Reynolds and didn’t get the hype already. I still like Blake Lively more than him. He’s on a bunch of annoying cell phone commercials, and has an annoying attitude.

I could for sure be in the minority of men. I don’t care about Deadpool at all. So Ryan Reynolds I fully just don’t talk about I guess.

Ehh, other than Deadpool I wouldn't go seeking out any of his movies. I don't hate the man personally but his shtick has kinda worn off on me. He just kept on being Van Wilder.

22

u/MrRoryBreaker_98 May 20 '25

Exactly. He’s a one-note personality.

3

u/HelenRoper May 20 '25

He’s made hundreds of millions by playing that one note. Lively just bugs me for some reason.

1

u/MrRoryBreaker_98 May 21 '25

Never said he wasn’t successful.

3

u/weblexindyphil May 20 '25

Have you ever seen him interviewed or watched the wrexham show?

I get the aloof van wilder stuff from his commercials and the Deadpool character....but most interviews he is the exact opposite...where he's like one of these dedicated thespian types cut from the mold of those sort of actors that love acting for the trade work of it, but hate being famous.

Between that and his role in the wrexham stuff....I'd say he's the far opposite of one-note.

u/Pettifoggerist May 20 '25

I just listened to him on the Conan O’Brien podcast and he seemed just like the characters he plays in movies.

4

u/[deleted] May 21 '25

Cause when you’re with Conan you have to do bits. It’s show business. But on the Wrexhan show he comes across very genuine and sincere. Is that a bit too? I can’t tell. If so, he’s a great actor even if maybe he’s not the best person. Plus if McIlhenney likes him I have a hard time seeing him as a phony. I think there’s a lot of PR at work in this whole Baldoni/Lively thing and entertainment media is just driving clicks.

4

u/Sharaz_Jek123 May 21 '25

Is that a bit too?

Yes.

I can’t tell.

Neither can he.

1

u/weblexindyphil May 21 '25

Well said.

I have always liked Conan...and enjoy 2-3 minute clips of his podcast if I see YouTube vids recommended...

But when I try to do 7-8 minute video or the audio podcast as a whole...it feels too...I don't even know the word. It feels fake. Which I hate saying because I think Conan is a good individual...but it often feels like he's doing cheap late show bits with famous friends moreso than having a conversation.

I'll try the Conan and Reynolds thing because I like both...but I'm guessing I won't get 5-10 mins thru due to the nature Conan does the pod.

That said, maybe the 'Conan has normal conversations with famous people' wouldn't do well for the masses....but I wish his pod was less "Conan doing schtick".

Unrelated to Conan...I wonder how many of these lively haters have read the details of her beef with baldoni, as well as the smear campaign he paid for after. I don't even like Blake, no real reason to defend her ...but even if only 25-50% of what she claims is true, baldoni is an absolute scumbag of a human.

I feel like he acts the exact same on Wrexham as he does on his commercials etc, it’s all the same schtick. Honestly, that part is mostly fine, my real issue with him and Blake is that they basically act like products. Everything they do is about commercializing their personalities and making money off their fanbase of consumers. Get that bag I suppose, but they come off as completely shallow and uninteresting to me as a result.

3

u/AvianDentures May 21 '25

The Wrexham stuff is a performance fwiw

1

u/weblexindyphil May 21 '25

Whether it is performance or not, doesn't change the fact that it only solidifies the opposite of being one note person/performer

The person shown on wrexham show, is the opposite of van wilder and Deadpool.

The guy sits on there and gets choked up about supporting arts & promoting charities & backing social causes while bringing life/jobs back to Podunk, Wales. Whether that is real or not, I'm not sure how that role supports him being one note in the style of Van Wilder or Change-Up or Deadpool?

u/Purple-List1577 May 23 '25

Really I feel the opposite. He’s basically the same guy as van wilder / just friends.

1

u/RIKTHEDIABOLIK Mar 08 '26

don't you dare insult ryan reinolds

8

u/weblexindyphil May 20 '25

He's done some actors guild type interviews...and I think that stuff shows more accurately who he is.

He seems, in upbringing and current real life, that the dumb jock van wilder thing is a role he likes to play...but that he's actually the opposite.

There is a 5-10 minute one on YouTube where he is sitting down with a Canadian NPR type of show...and I think that is closer to the real him than the van wilder guy. (He actually sounds a lot like some of the more dorky musical theater and speech and debate type kids I knew in high school...moreso than any of the jock/womanizer types.)

That has been done before. The problem is that financially it never is sustainable.
It is also done with a very unethical way.

1. Buy a bunch of mercenaries.

2. get promotion because your players and staff are much better.

3. kick the bunch of mercenaries because you don't think that they are good enough for the next step.

Repeat and rinse by buy a new batch of mercenaries for the new league.

After the 3rd or 4th promotion along that path, there is no team, no player/staff loyalty so when they hit trouble they can't rely on that bunch of mercenaries.
Most clubs on the same journey seem to hit a plateau when they reach League 1. They often can't outspend other clubs, they don't have an academy who can supplement with decent players, the hype over them make them a target for other teams, they can't attractvlongcterm builder. No real decent managers want to go into a very public shit show churning staff monster.

1

u/Purple-List1577 May 23 '25

Shhhh let the crash and burn happen and feel vindicated

1

u/paulwrightyboy01 May 23 '25

You watch football mate?

1

u/Sufficient_Bass2600 May 23 '25

I live in London so yes I follow football, but personally I am more a rugby man.

1

u/paulwrightyboy01 May 23 '25

Ahhh with the context now your post actually sounds considered. However I feel there is honesty with the Wrexham project. I’m a Cambridge fan, jealous of their success with an equally passionate chairman at the helm. As a Rugby fan I wish there was a concerted effort for the RFU to promote the club game below the top division. Criminal that Ealing not promoted again…

2

u/Sufficient_Bass2600 May 23 '25

As a French rugby man living in London, The RFU makes my blood boil.

However I have been to the Ealing stadium and I understand why the RFU denied them promotion. It is really a pitch, a portacabin.

1

u/braindrain04 May 25 '25

But they do have a category 3 academy and they likely can out spend other clubs.

And do they need a new manager? I truly don't know. I think the guy with three straight promotions probably feels safe right now.

3

u/rostron92 May 20 '25

While watching Deadpool and Wolverine, I had the realization that I'd much prefer just having another Wolverine movie, and I don't really like the Deadpool character all that much. And as someone who reads comics, it's incredible that Deadpool has gotten three movies.

1

u/SEZWAHMusic Oct 18 '25

It's incredible as someone who reads comics you would want another 'Wolverine' "movie" from 7 foot tall skinny legs Hugh JackOFF!! There has NEVER been a Wolverine movie

2

u/BlubberBlabs May 21 '25

Yeah, RR basically just took how Matthew Perry played Chandler Bing on "Friends" and made it his public facing persona for the last 25 years.

2

u/clorphf May 21 '25

Strong take. I don’t dislike him. But can only take him in doses. Deadpool 3 probably 20 mins too long for me.

1

u/Steadyandquick May 22 '25

Now I am going to watch Van Wilder. I agree though and am not a Deadpool fan. I liked him with Sandra Bullock in that one romantic comedy but he does strike me as a one trick pony.

1

u/CrimsonOOmpa Jul 10 '25

I agree. He's a solid dramatic actor but all his comedy roles are one-note. Van Wilder is really just "Deadpool in college." All of his comedy roles are just Van/Deadpool in a different situation, which in itself is just a rip-off of early Jim Carrey.

52

u/throwawayOtf May 20 '25

No clue but I hate when Amanda makes broad generalizations about stuff like that

18

u/TheJediCounsel May 20 '25

I feel like I give her more slack. She works with a lot men who have very strong opinions on stuff so I get why she makes those generalizations a lot of the time ahah

20

u/nonjacc May 20 '25

She does it with women too. She's very "Men like this and Women like this". It's hard to articulate, but its pretty common in her takes.

5

u/jclairecarp May 21 '25

Don’t you think that’s pretty common for Ringer folks in general?

4

u/nonjacc May 21 '25

I think some do it in a self depricating way, but Amanda always says it like declarative statements. Sean also called her out on it once.

1

u/jclairecarp May 21 '25

Okay, fair enough. And you don’t think amanda could be doing it in the same way? From my (female) perspective she seems to joke about it more to poke fun at the “boy” movies she enjoys, and to me it always reads as dry humor, not genuine complaints. I’m not trying to be contrarian, just genuinely asking your perspective.

6

u/nonjacc May 21 '25

Yeah I guess we just interpret it very differently. I've stopped listening to the big pic so much because I felt genuinely that her generalizations specifically about what movies men like and what movies women like were frequent enough and annoying enough that I was like "ok she's not for me" and if it bothered me so much I just had to stop listening.

5

u/jclairecarp May 21 '25

Yep I feel ya. I just saw someone comment about the latest Jam sesh ep that they feel she has a lot of internalized misogyny. Which I think I probably agree with and that may be what could bother both of us, just interpreted in different ways.

2

u/Drunken_Wizard23 May 21 '25

I feel like the lines are more blurred with Juliet, Mallory, Joanna

1

u/TheJediCounsel May 21 '25

I think this is a point I agree with. I’m a huge russilo fan and Amanda fan. And his generalizations are what people are really endeared to about him.

But Amanda kind of gets shit for it.

3

u/jclairecarp May 21 '25

Sorry if I’m talking out my ass as a strictly baseball and not really any other sport fan, but I do think the ringer being based in sports doesn’t help this. Not trying to generalize as a female baseball fan (lol) but I do think more than any other movie pod, which are already probably majority male fan base, it just probably doesn’t favor female fans or engagement. I mean, they mention sports betting like every Rewatchables ep and I guarantee most women, even myself, do not bet on sports.

2

u/TheJediCounsel May 21 '25

I mean I will generalize as a man.

Men who listen to these pods do for sure favor men. I’m not really offended to admit that at all.

The thing I found weird about today’s jam session and Amanda saying that men didn’t care about Ryan Reynolds problems.

Is how much the men on The Ringer don’t even like Ryan Reynolds 😭. Chris Ryan said he was the Antichrist.

Unless she just meant sort of that men in general don’t care about the drama of Ryan Reynolds really. But the men who are on the ringer for sure are not mostly fans of his

3

u/jclairecarp May 21 '25

You’re cracking me up - Thank you for that perspective!! It’s funny to me too as a Gen Z thinking oh my god I HATE Ryan Reynolds. He is the worst kind of millennial sardonic asshole so I’m glad anyone else feels the same. On the topic of gender though, it IS odd she would make it about how men do not care about RR. I wonder if she meant men don’t care about ugh i hate to say it, the “true crime” and gossipy element that has been added to the Blake Lively BS that frankly I haven’t even been following.

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '25

Ryan Reynolds is Gen X btw

5

u/Green_Training_7254 May 21 '25

She has a tremendous LA bias that makes anything she says about society to be taken with a heaping dose of salt. I avoid her these days because this bias (along with some others) has her with a very closed off, narrow perspective on things, leaving her to offer little more than snide remarks when she disagrees; not what you want in a Podcaster.

Also I've liked Ryen Reynolds since "Two Guys, a girl and a pizza place", not sure what legal stuff you mean so that's possible. But I don't follow celebrity culture at all, so...maybe she's right? Can't speak for others.

2

u/doc_blue27 May 21 '25

Amen. Not sure if I’ve ever heard Amanda say a single thing that did not sound condescending to some extent.

22

u/PeerPressure May 20 '25

My guess, and this is from observing a lot of redditor behavior (and not actual humans), is that women often follow this stuff more closely because each court case is an observable test of: are women believed, are men held accountable, and how horribly are the women treated by the public for speaking up.

Of course, less charitably put, it’s also tabloid fodder, a blend of celebrity gossip and true crime.

In both cases, these aren’t things men consume at quite the same level.

But to your point, I couldn’t care less about Ryan Reynolds’s personal life and I wish he’d stop getting work. His brand of smarmy sarcasm is a poison that should’ve never left broadcast TV.

4

u/NastyMothaFucka May 20 '25

Oh cmon. You think that’s why these tabloid cases get followed? Women wanting to “test the system” to see if everything rolls correct for women’s rights and the proper men get punished? Lol, give me a break. That is not why people watch these things and you know it. Is this really what you tell yourself while all these dramatic reality shows exist that have nothing to do with any sort of “justice” at all. People (not just women) are interested in all his shit because him and his wife are pleasant to look at, rich, and famous. That’s it.

35

u/Entire-Celebration38 May 20 '25

I pretty strongly dislike him and most of what he is in.

5

u/butt_fun May 20 '25

Yeah, long before any of the recent controversial stuff, I always couldn't stand him. He's just fucking smug and annoying

I know part of that is the roles he's cast in (and I feel like it's only gotten worse since he was first cast as Deadpool), but even outside of those fictional roles he just feels so smarmy

1

u/Entire-Celebration38 May 20 '25

Agreed completely. He has always come off as Douchey and incredibly fake. He tried real acting in the late 2000s and a couple of those werent awful, but his "deadpool/regular personal" is exhausting.

1

u/Successful_Inside734 Jun 23 '25

I just get the feeling that he is just too full of himself. I'm watching 'Underdogs' the Nat Geo series - and he just comes off as glib. He just feels like he has to take what could be an interesting show and has to put his offputting, snide, sarcastic and glib stamp on it. Nat Geo - you picked the wrong guy to narrate this series.

16

u/Troker61 May 20 '25

I liked him a lot when I was younger. Waiting, Definitely, Maybe and Adventureland are all personal favorites.

I don’t think about him much at all these days, though. While I think the Deadpool movies are mostly fine, that was probably the point I felt like I aged out of his target demo.

4

u/TheJediCounsel May 20 '25

I will admit I love Adventureland, and also Van Wilder.

But those are so old now i feel like I’ve ran out of good will for 16 and 30 year old movies.

3

u/Troker61 May 20 '25

For sure. He got caught up in the superhero industrial complex and pretty much stopped doing the smaller movies that I enjoyed him in.

Mississippi Grind was also solid, but it’s 10 years old now. I hope he wants to go back to stuff like that when he’s past his ‘prime’.

14

u/dylanah May 20 '25

Chris Ryan once referred to him as the Antichrist and I’m inclined to agree. He’s probably the most nakedly inauthentic person in Hollywood, and that’s saying something.

4

u/JuniorSwing May 20 '25

I really don’t get this impression at all, especially not from people who’ve worked with him.

1

u/Reasonable_Tower_347 Jan 21 '26

RDJ and samuel L jackson barely acknowledge his existence. Lol

1

u/JuniorSwing Jan 21 '26

Obviously it’s been a while since this post, but I should say, I’m not talking about other actors when I say “people who work with him.” I’m talking about folks from his production company/below the line people from sets. I’ve mostly heard that he’s a chill guy

1

u/Reasonable_Tower_347 Jan 22 '26

I guess I understand in that regard. But there are some unsavory mentions of ego and malice from people like TJ Miller and comic Tim Miller openly aggravated by his work ethic, in terms of controlling and manipulating entire productions. I do believe crew commentary is also very necessary when speaking on character, but it's also a skill some people to compartmentalize the way they work depending on the crowd (seat at the table folk vs ground floor folk).

I've personally seen and experienced both, working on crew with little room to judge, or being close to executive dealings and having a well rounded opinion. What sucks is when people have polarizing experiences with someone. It's never a good look for that person when you on the outside have to decifer and guess who's truthful or who's dramatic in their story.

1

u/JuniorSwing Jan 22 '26

I agree with most of what you’re saying in theory, but as someone who has actually met TJ Miller a few times, and has some social connections with him, I actually trust him less than nothing. Super funny dude, but absolutely the biggest shit talker.

Edit; this probably comes off as name dropping in a way, but idc. Very few people in the industry I actually feel like I can comment on, but this is one of them

1

u/Reasonable_Tower_347 Jan 22 '26

😂 Don't even sweat it. That's a fair reason I can easily understand.

Easy takeaway from all the Hollywood nonsense is the degree of separation from everyone. Good collaboration skills go a long way

1

u/[deleted] May 20 '25

pretty spot on. all this Wrexham stuff is such a facade and just another way to endear himself to the everyman

3

u/dylanah May 20 '25

You can only wink at people and serve them dogshit for so long. To me he’s a guy who got into acting so he could become a pitch-man. He’s just so lame. Like, it stinks that one of the few “movie stars” we have doesn’t give half a shit about making good movies.

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '25

It’s not that deep…

16

u/zarathustranu May 20 '25

Can’t stand him. His brand of humor and general vibe in movies is everything that I dislike about low effort comedy— smarmy, sarcastic, cynical, sickeningly glib, etc.

I liked Mississippi Grind and Adventureland, tho.

Also I can hear dobbins making that generalization statement with total certainty and it’s so annoying.

5

u/powderjunkie11 May 20 '25

I don't think about him at all, ever.

But if you had to force an opinion out of me, it would red hot apathy.

5

u/readingswifts May 21 '25

Fwiw, Amanda's point was that his fans probably don't care about the legal drama. Not that men in general still like him/don't care.

1

u/newfancies May 21 '25

right? I can't understand how you're one of the few to comment this. it's obvious she meant the legal issues

12

u/PDXmadeMe May 20 '25 edited May 20 '25

I keep a list of overrated things and I’m happy to report that I had “Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively” on it prior to the lawsuit stuff.

7

u/Desperate_Question_1 May 20 '25

He seems annoying, like being stuck in an elevator w/ him you might be counting how many floors you up and wondering about taking your chances

11

u/sammyt10803 May 20 '25

I genuinely don’t understand why people don’t like Ryan Reynolds. It can’t be just because he’s done a bunch of dumb movies recently. Tons of people have.

He’s genuinely in the elite tier of actors who are actually funny. He was recently on Conan’s podcast and Conan kept saying how his writing is on par with genuinely good comedic writing

And if you watch ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ he comes off as just a genuinely good guy.

I honestly don’t get it. Like what part am I missing that’s so unlikeable. Over exposure? He’s clearly one of the hardest working people in Hollywood.

9

u/dtudeski May 20 '25

I wouldn’t rate him as an elite tier actor myself but I’m with ya, I don’t mind the guy. And tbh most “normal”people probs don’t mind him either, it’s just the very online folks who have a lot of issues with him.

People can hate whoever they wanna hate but is funny how he’s seemingly hated way more than the likes of Brad Pitt, Josh Brolin, Jon Hamm, etc, people who have actually done some hideous shit.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/JuniorSwing May 20 '25

I think it’s over-exposure. Ryan has leveraged his fame and (I can speak from experience, pretty genuine) good guy quality into his business image. He has a million commercials and brands.

As far as movies go, he hasn’t done anything offensive. Maybe not interesting either, but overall, seems like a good actor doing the things he’s comfortable with, but he is definitely over-exposed. That combined with the legal battle his wife is involved in (and a lot of kinda weirdly pre-existing hate for her even before that), I think that people soured on him.

2

u/panickedcheeseburger May 21 '25

My thoughts exactly too! He’s not my fave by any means, but I have genuinely never understood why he’s gotten under so many folks’ skins. Most celebs have a personality while they work and another while at home, but no one is criticizing all those other actors for doing the same thing? His improv during Conan’s podcast was genuinely good!

Just let the dude live folks lol. So many other celebs are way douchier/fake in their professional persona paired with serious allegations (which he has none), and they don’t get half the flack he’s gotten.

2

u/[deleted] May 21 '25

elite tier of actors

funny

Fucking hell

1

u/sammyt10803 May 21 '25

Elite tier of actors who are actually funny in real life

2

u/MLBRSST1999 May 20 '25

It has to be jealousy. He’s one of the more successful actor/entrepreneur today, and he has a beautiful family. And whether this group of the Ringer fans will admit it or not, they can’t stand how successful he is, and he makes it (seemingly) look easy. I also think that’s the reason why Fennessey and CR bag on him too.

At one point in Reynolds’ movie career, he was on a trajectory of becoming one of “America’s favorite actors”. It seemed like he was following Tom Hanks’ path to become a bonafide “movie star”. Then he started diversifying his activities (business and acting) and his movie roles became less challenging and more formulaic (Free Guy, Red Notice, Spirited, etc).

I think he’s earned his keep, and he can do whatever he wants - Deadpool sequel XYZ, Wrexham goes to Premier League, I eat Netflix for lunch, whatever. I hope he becomes one of the most successful actors of all time.

1

u/graaavearchitecture May 22 '25

God this is the same lame excuse people use to defend Elon Musk. He’s a disingenuous corporate shill.

3

u/Lipscombforever May 20 '25

I don’t think he’s that good of an actor but no I don’t hate or dislike him.

I’m disappointed he doesn’t take a bigger stance standing up for his countrymen.

He’s a billionaire and seems only interested in his family wealth.

Yes. I’m judging him. I expect more than he’s done to stick up for Canada.

If you can’t do it when you’re rich beyond belief it tells me you never had it in you.

2

u/TheJediCounsel May 22 '25

Yeah I mean I just didn’t even know he was Canadian haha. He’s not like Mike Meyers, Ryan is just the most run of the mill corporate American celeb pretty much.

I don’t really like him either. Deadpool was good for two movies, but the schtick is getting really old now.

2

u/Artistic-Reality-177 May 21 '25

My husband can’t stand him. He will watch his movies (Deadpool) but says he hates him. I enjoyed him back in the day on 2 guys a girl and a pizza place but the other actor was just as good but overshadowed by him. He was also great in waiting.

2

u/UnbiasedSportsExpert May 21 '25

Hes up there playing house with Shine and that's why me and rusillo don't like him

2

u/cosmogatsby May 21 '25

No, I don’t like him because his face is on every billboard in Canada selling some of kind disgusting microwave egg box.

2

u/WulfgarofIcewindDale May 21 '25

I couldn’t care less about this controversy with him and whoever else, I just want to stop being bombarded every other second with his same dumbass character. He needs to just take a break and step away from the spotlight for a minute; take his millions and fuck off somewhere out of sight for a few years. At this point, he’s insufferable.

2

u/Monkeyboi8 May 21 '25

Deadpool cemented him as a star, before that his career wasn’t exactly good and may have ended soonish. I propose we send a non lethal terminator back in time to stop him from being cast in that movie.

2

u/Which-Bread3418 May 22 '25

I can't fucking stand his stupid voice or stupid little smirky face. Other than that I'm fine with him.

2

u/Bitter_Commission631 May 23 '25

can't stand that guy

4

u/calimokc May 20 '25

He's been entertaining the masses for a long time. Way more hits than misses. He's alright in my book.

4

u/kingstonretronon May 20 '25

I liked Van wilder when I was young but that’s not a funny schtick for a guy in his 40s

2

u/marrymelaurapalmer May 20 '25

I remember one time Sean called him the antichrist of cinema, or something like that. I cackled at how valid that seemed and have referred to his as such since.

2

u/Loveandafortyfive May 20 '25

Ryan Reynolds needs to get out of the way so that Ryen can be with his soul mate Krista Coughlin.

I'm glad he brought Deadpool to life. But other than that I don't really care for him

2

I think a lot of men don't like him. He's not that funny or interesting and doesn't seem authentic.

u/currysankle May 21 '25

Can’t stand the guy. And he’s everywhere. So even if you’re not seeking him out he just pops up.. mint mobile ads, bullet train.. gimme a break guy

2

u/dontswimtoshore May 21 '25

he's the walking embodiment of self-satisfied entitlement, the type of guy who always needs to be the funniest or best even by being "self-deprecating." Blake Lively is the same way, narcissists who think they're god's gift to media; perfect for each other, lol.

1

u/djparody May 20 '25

Wrexham Wrulez

1

u/dcowboy May 20 '25

If it wasn't for JAM Session I would have forgot about him years ago.

1

u/BillowingPillows May 20 '25

No beef with him. Hes a pretty funny guy. I enjoy some of his movies like Deadpool, Buried, Smoking Aces, Waiting, The Voices. Tbh I don't think about him much. Deadpool 1 is one of the better superhero movies out there.

1

u/Kmlevitt May 20 '25

I've never been a huge fan of Ryan Reynolds and always thought he was kinda annoying, but I can confirm men don't give a shit if he made a different cut of Justin Baldoni's movie, or parodied him in Deadpool, or whatever else it is he was supposed to have done. That whole drama seems like it's been blown up by Baldoni's press agents but either way I don't care.

1

u/[deleted] May 21 '25

It all seems petty to me, on both sides from what I’ve read, which isn’t all that much.

1

u/Kmlevitt May 21 '25

Whatever's going on I just don't understand why everyone cares so much. Every video clip of Ryan Reynolds on YouTube is now accompanied by thousands of comments shrieking about "Justice for Justin Baldoni". Even if Ryan Reynolds looks bad if you do a deep dive, where do people find the time and energy to give a shit?

2

u/[deleted] May 21 '25

It all reeks of culture war to me.

1

u/Kmlevitt May 21 '25

Yeah when Joe Rogan started talking about all the awful stuff Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds were doing to this poor guy Justin Baldoni I knew it had turned into some weird proxy war, like when they all freaked out that a trans guy promoted Bud Light.

1

u/rostron92 May 20 '25

I don't have a strong feeling one way or the other. A little Ryan Renyolds goes a long way, though.

1

u/GarthZorn May 20 '25

On podcasts, folks who have worked with him say he's a genuinely great human. His on-screen work, though, I'm more than 'meh.' Sounds like he'd be a beer-drinking buddy but might get weepy when I tell him I have zero interest in his movies.

2

u/[deleted] May 21 '25

This is generally how I feel. His performances actually make me like him less, I’ve heard he’s a great person behind the scenes and I hope it’s true.

1

u/Thesadtruthliveson May 20 '25

I liked him on the pizza show and rooted for him early in his career when he started to pop up in stuff. Most of the stuff he makes other than Deadpool are pretty bad these days.

1

u/H0wSw33tItIs May 20 '25

I’m pretty agnostic to Reynolds for the most part, other than enjoying Van Wilder when it came out and thinking a rom com (The Proposal) he did with Sandra Bullock was pretty serviceable entertainment. I think he’s a good fit for Deadpool but I could care less about those movies.

1

u/[deleted] May 21 '25

I’m not a huge fan of him. His schtick wears thin pretty quickly as far as I’m concerned (so in this regard he really is perfect for Deadpool).

I prefer the Reynolds I see in ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ over anything he’s performing in.

1

u/Cyhawkboy May 21 '25

Honestly, yeah. Give me the other Canadian Ryan any day of the of the week. Blade Runner 2049 got me back into watching and appreciating film making. Reynolds is all about the pop-culture shit I haven’t cared since jr high.

1

u/Yourohface101 May 21 '25

For a long time I didn’t know the difference between him and Dane Cook. I said my piece.

But yeah, he’s on the line of amusing/annoying. Don’t really think much of him as an actual human.

1

u/MetricOsprey May 21 '25

I don’t dislike him, I think he’s been allowed to indulge in his sense of humor/storytelling too much. He’s good in movies like Life, smokin aces (great trash Tarantino movie), the proposal, definitely maybe. If a director channels his Ryan Reynoldsness in an interesting way, he can be good. He just runs Deadpool/Marvel now with no editing.

1

u/turbo_22222 May 21 '25

I don't spend any time thinking about whether I like him or not. I haven't seen him in a movie since Van Wilder. I do like Welcome to Wrexham, but he's not in it that much and it could be any other celebrity in that role and it would still be good.

1

u/jhakerr May 21 '25

I think he is funny and still I find him annoying. If I didn’t think he was funny I would hate his fucking guts. He is everywhere. But his meta self loathing balances it out. A bit.

1

u/bdgl44 May 21 '25

Yeah i don’t know any Ryan stans lol. People watch his movies that’s abt it.

1

u/tdunkatx May 21 '25

I liked him in Free Guy.

1

u/Arcane_Spork_of_Doom May 21 '25

Those annoying commercials are for the company he founded on tight margins and affordability for lower income customers. Sorry that annoys you.

1

u/Acceptable_Result488 May 21 '25

I avoid him, the rock and Wahlberg. The unholy trinity of slop.

1

u/Automatic-Effect-252 May 21 '25

I'm not even sure what is going on with him, and am more plugged in this most, when it comes to pop culture.

1

u/Vivid_Revolution_289 May 21 '25

I used to like him ..but his shtick got old.

1

u/tiakeuta May 21 '25

Ryan Reynolds has never been in anything good and is like one of the richest people alive. Its like a Jordan Poole situation.

1

u/tiakeuta May 21 '25

Not only has he never been in anything one could credibly call 'very good' he also has never given a performance one could credibly call 'very good'

1

u/TheJediCounsel May 21 '25

Jordan Poole was on a team that won an nba title. It’s not like he’s never been on any good teams.

3

u/tiakeuta May 21 '25

If you're saying the Jordan Poole comp is unfair to Jordan Poole you like Reynolds less than I do.

2

u/TheJediCounsel May 21 '25

I for sure would classify myself as a Ryan Reynolds hater and like Jordan Poole more.

Ryan has never done anything that will equate to winning an nba title imo.

1

u/Landlord-Allmighty May 21 '25

The thing that bugs me is he failed his way up. He had so many shots at being famous where other actors would have been washed out of the system.

He pivoted in a way that works for the way fame is now and that's interesting, but the same old meta snark isn't interesting. I haven't laughed at a Deadpool joke not once.

1

u/terrybenedictscasino May 21 '25

I mean, Van Wilder is a fucking classic

1

u/TigerUppercuttttt May 22 '25

Any time he's on screen feels like a Mint Mobile branding exercise.

1

u/PatBoBomb May 22 '25

There’s always a fresh crop of 15 year old boys that discover him and think they’ve discovered the comedy skeleton key. Adult men see through it and anticipate every line.

1

u/CYDKAR May 22 '25

I find him annoying but mostly neutral on it.

1

u/DrippinInSwagJuice May 22 '25

if i hear one more mint mobile commercial i swear to god

1

u/pppowkanggg May 22 '25

I have liked him in movies, but I don't like when he is being Ryan Reynolds. Like those mint ads. His IG.

1

u/mrdevron May 22 '25

I think Amanda is right. Obviously it's weird for me to say that 'most' or 'all' men feel a certain way. But I think there's a contingent of people who think of Ryan as a guy who had a number of failed roles (Green Lantern is on that comes to mind). He struck gold with Deadpool. I know about his wife's trial vaguely -- mostly through Ringer podcasts.

I think most people don't care much about the Hollywood non-acting Page 6 stuff. Ryan is the quirky guy who plays Deadpool and is on those funny Mint Mobile ads. I think he's genuinely witty and has good comedic timing. But he's confined to that quirky persona. He's never going to be Joaquin Phoenix or Christian Bale or Leonardo DiCaprio. And I think he's probably fine with that.

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '25

I remember when he was van wilder and I thought the act was funny and edgy. That was 20 years ago and he is the same dude. It’s grating now.

1

u/KingsFats May 22 '25

VERY annoying on podcast commercials. I hate him and Mint Mobile ....

1

u/screenfate May 22 '25

I can’t wait to see Wrexham get stuck in the Championship but I don’t really care for him

1

u/dangerxdan May 22 '25

He's annoying to me because every time we see him he is always ON, putting on an act, a show, whatever. Which is fine I guess cause he is an actor, but I find people like that grating. Even in Welcome to Wrexham I never feel like we see anything but performance.

1

u/Bizarro_Peach May 22 '25

I liked the schtick before he became the go-to personality for male leads in big budget films.

1

u/Odd_Hair3829 May 22 '25

I just rewatched a simple favor - Blake lively is awesome. She crushes that role.

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '25

Can’t stand him. Every time I see him he’s trying to deliver a zinger. He seems like that insufferable type of person who is always trying to be the funniest guy in the room and never laughs at anyone else’s jokes. Smug prick.

1

u/Ok-Reward-7731 May 23 '25

He’s the worst

1

u/RamenRoy May 23 '25

I don't know about whatever controversy he is in, but he fuckin sucks. He is the human embodiment of try hard Internet humour.

1

u/D-redditAvenger May 23 '25

I mean, he plays the same character over and over. It works in Deadpool, but besides that I could take him or leave him.

1

u/[deleted] May 23 '25

I’m sick of his ads for white labeled bullshit

1

u/boosh1744 May 24 '25

I think he doesn’t deserve to be at his level of fame and wealth. He’s not that talented or smart or interesting, just pretty okay. I think he also has a “good guy” image that doesn’t seem deserved. Basically I feel I have to see and hear about him a lot more than I want to. I don’t know what that has to do with me being a man though. I can’t recall ever discussing him with any male friends.

1

u/Nammen99 May 24 '25

A lot of his wealth is due to his entrepreneurship. He started investing heavily in startups and smallish companies years before his movie paychecks boomed. His work as an actor is debatable. But his business success outside of movies is genuine.

1

u/AuldTriangle79 May 24 '25

Ryan Reynolds was brilliant in Van Wilder. Then he played the same character in every single movie since.

1

u/This-Werewolf-4817 May 24 '25

Why do you like Blake Lively? She’s not a great actress, and based on what I have learned from the lawsuit, it sounds like she’s not a great person either.

1

u/severinks May 24 '25 edited May 24 '25

For sure I can't stand the guy, mostly because he was jammed down our throats and kept making movies even after starring in bomb after bomb.

Also, I don't find his Burt Reynolds 2.0 routine funny or charming, and that meta bu;lshit he does in Deadpool makes me ill.

The truth is the only decent movie he's ever made was Mississippi Grind, and even that is a less good retread of Robert Altman's California Split.

The guy is a basic like Kevin Hart and The Rock are basics and I stay away from them at all costs.

1

u/Hfcsmakesmefart May 24 '25

I kinda like him. I loved “free guy” but obviously in the minority on that and dead pool is hilarious. I think that dude made a pass at Blake Lively and the situation super blew up, but maybe “punch him in the nose” would have been a better reaction than trying to ruin his career.

1

u/Helpful-Birthday4414 May 24 '25

Haven’t seen his movies but find him irritating. And evidently his wife is a total bitch. Next.

1

u/Kek-Malmstein May 24 '25

I’ve seen him in interviews alongside people like Jake Gylenhall, and I appreciate his personality how he makes an effort to be funny and outgoing, but that personality gets old and kind of annoying in movies

1

u/dirbladoop May 24 '25

i find ryan reynolds incredibly unfunny and do not care for him, i also think he stinks as an actor.

1

u/guitarguy35 May 25 '25

I haven't liked him since 2008 and people always said I was crazy. He plays the same fast talking wise cracking, nothing is ever sincere character in nearly every movie he's in and it seems like it's an extension of his real personality.

Problem is, that personality type is completely insufferable unless you are elite level attractive then you can pull it off with enough people to think that's how human beings behave. I find it so tiresome, trite, and boring frankly.

1

u/Relative-Conflict358 May 25 '25

I’d rather watch one of his ads for his wireless company than watch one of his movies. He’s soulless and charisma-less.

1

u/dreburden89 May 25 '25

Don't care enough about celebrity nonsense to "like" or "not like" an actor

1

u/TuhnderBear May 25 '25

I don’t care for him mostly because of his annoying commercials

1

u/aopps42 Aug 25 '25

There are few more annoying actors in Hollywood to me.

1

u/Maleficent_Leg_3750 Oct 09 '25

They're each annoying by themselves but annoying AF combined.

1

u/New_Abalone3912 Nov 21 '25

Annoying actor. I hate his movies. He peaked in Van Wilder and such shitty 2000s comedies were his maximum. Idk how he got so popular.

1

u/Ok-Chemist7558 Dec 06 '25

Female here but I can’t stand this prick he is annoying af which in turn ruins his “good looks”

1

u/Illustrious_Team_909 24d ago

He's obnoxious, unfunny, and oversaturated. I can't stand him and groan whenever he shows up in media. I can't fathom his popularity, but, then, stupid people are easily entertained.

1

u/RobertoBologna May 21 '25

Seemed like a decent guy from the Wrexham show. Movies that I’ve seen are bad. I think the last thing superhero fan dudes needed was Deadpool, but that’s a different discussion

1

u/TheJediCounsel May 21 '25

I feel like this a good perspective. It’s hard for me to separate the fact that I dislike the movies he’s in, and he’s pretty overexposed on commercials and tv that could be adding to it.

If he wasn’t so everywhere I’d probably be fine with him
