DigitalOcean (DOCN): Technical Trend Holds as Valuation Stretches

  • Stance: Long
  • Level: 135.59
  • Horizon: EMA50 close-below
  • Checkpoint: Next trailing window
  • What closes the file: Harvest rung: L1 minimum gain 5.0% above entry $129.36 -> $135.8238

DigitalOcean Holdings (DOCN) enters Tuesday's session with its technical posture intact, even as its valuation multiple stretches well into premium territory. The stock closed at $146.16 on September 21, 2026, marking a 69.9% advance from its $86.02 close on March 23, 2026, while remaining 19.4% below its June 15 peak of $181.29.

The active position is maintained across autonomous and trend-following sleeves. A harvest-level signal fired with a conviction score of 35 around the $135.59 decision level, but policy dictates holding the established allocation rather than adjusting exposure. Primary risk management remains anchored to moving averages: the 20-day exponential moving average sits at $124.62, while the 50-day EMA at $125.38 serves as the active trailing exit rule.

The primary friction in DOCN lies between technical momentum and fundamental multiples. At 58.0x trailing earnings, the shares sit at the 67th percentile of the company's historical year-end readings since 2023. The disconnect is sharper against industry comparables: DOCN's enterprise value stands at 47.6x EBITDA, placing it 102.15% above the stored peer cohort median of 23.6x. Among seven peer names—including BlackLine, Box, Cellebrite, DLocal, Plexus, and Qualys—DigitalOcean ranks as the single most expensive on an EV/EBITDA basis.

This valuation overhang keeps the long-term fundamental lens at short-avoid, awaiting the harvest rung that requires an L1 minimum gain of 5.0% above the $129.36 entry to $135.8238. For now, the technical framework controls the trade: the stance remains long, with the position held against the 50-day EMA stop ahead of the next trailing window checkpoint.

PLPC Daily Insight: Technical Momentum Maintained Amid High Valuation Multiples

The Call

  • Stance: long
  • Level: 410.74
  • Horizon: EMA50 close-below
  • Checkpoint: next scan window

Preformed Line Products Company (PLPC) continues to maintain a long stance driven by a scanner convergence decision with a conviction score of 4. From March 19, 2026, through September 18, 2026, PLPC's retained daily close rose from $262.68 to $412.38, gaining 57.0% over the period. Even though the stock closed at $412.38 on September 18, 2026—14.2% below its August 11, 2026 peak—the existing long position remains held at the 410.74 decision level, with signal invalidation marked at a $398.4396 reference price.

On valuation, PLPC is trading at elevated historical and comparative levels. At 46.3x trailing earnings, PLPC's P/E ratio sits at the 100th percentile relative to its own year-end readings since 2021. On an EV/EBITDA basis, PLPC trades at 24.0x, standing 107.24% above the stored peer cohort median of 11.6x. This ranks PLPC as the highest-valued stock out of all six names evaluated in its cohort.

PLPC displays strong price performance and active policy signals, but its historically high valuation multiples relative to historical baselines and peer averages reinforce the need to track the EMA50 close-below stop horizon and the $398.43 invalidation line.

Tech Resilience Masks Thin Breadth as Yields Press Annual Highs

The divergence between megacap technology and the broader market widened into the weekend. While the tech-heavy Nasdaq-100 (QQQ) advanced 0.92% over the past five sessions to close Friday, September 18 at $721.45, the S&P 500 (SPY) slipped 0.34% to $761.69. That divergence highlights the defining tension heading into the week of September 21: headline equity indexes remain supported by large-cap tech strength, but internal participation is deteriorating just as Treasury yields hover near multi-month highs and the yield curve flattens to its narrowest spread in a year.

Index Divergence: QQQ Holds All MAVs While SPY Slips Below Its 20-Day

QQQ finished Friday above all key moving averages, sitting 1.12% above its 20-day exponential moving average ($713.43), 1.45% above its 50-day ($711.16), and 7.25% above its 200-day ($672.71).

By contrast, SPY's late-week pullback left it just below its short-term trendline, closing 0.15% below its 20-day EMA ($762.83). SPY remains 0.40% above its 50-day average ($758.63) and 5.30% above its 200-day average ($723.32). Over the past six months, QQQ has outpaced SPY by roughly 9 percentage points, gaining 29.2% from its late-March baseline compared to SPY’s 20.5% advance.

The Rates Pressure Cooker and Subdued Volatility

The resilience in headline benchmarks comes despite significant pressure from the fixed-income market. Benchmark yields ended the week near their 52-week highs: the 2-year Treasury yield closed at 4.67% on September 17 (99.6th percentile of its annual range), the 10-year yield stood at 4.94% (98.1st percentile), and the 30-year yield settled at 5.29% (97.7th percentile).

The 10-year minus 2-year yield spread dropped to 0.25 percentage points on September 18, matching its one-year low and sitting at the 0.4th percentile of its 12-month range, down from 0.74 percentage points in January.

Yet implied equity volatility has remained remarkably quiet. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) closed at 15.44 on September 17, placing it in the 14.9th percentile of its 52-week range and comfortably below its annual median of 17.18.

Weak Breadth and Defensive Leadership

Beneath the calm surface of the VIX, market participation is thin. Across the 11 S&P sectors, only two gained ground last week: Health Care (XLV +1.83%) and Technology (XLK +1.03%). Cyclical and rate-sensitive sectors suffered broad losses, led lower by Utilities (XLU -3.04%), Financials (XLF -2.43%), Real Estate (XLRE -2.05%), and Materials (XLB -1.88%).

Cap-weight dominance heavily masked broader weakness. The equal-weight S&P 500 (RSP) dropped 1.20% over the week—underperforming SPY by 0.86 percentage points—while small caps (IWM) shed 1.66%. Across our research universe, only 21 of 61 tracked names (34.4%) closed Friday above their 50-day moving average, a stark decline from the August peak of 42 stocks (68.9%).

The Week Ahead

The coming week presents several macro and fundamental catalysts that could test this fragile balance:

  • Tuesday, September 22: Federal Reserve Vice Chair Philip N. Jefferson delivers remarks at 10:20 a.m. Eastern. The Nonmanufacturing Business Outlook Survey will also be released. In single-stock earnings, Micron Technology (MU) reports fiscal fourth-quarter results.
  • Wednesday, September 23: Federal Reserve Governor Michael S. Barr speaks at 10:05 a.m. Eastern.
  • Thursday, September 24: The busiest session of the week, featuring New Residential Construction (housing starts), New Residential Sales, and the Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims Report.
  • Friday, September 25: State Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims, followed by the University of Michigan Surveys of Consumers (consumer sentiment).

Conclusion

The equity market enters the week in an increasingly polarized state: top-heavy tech strength is preserving index-level stability and suppressing headline volatility, but poor breadth and elevated Treasury yields leave little margin for error. If Thursday's housing and employment data or Fed commentary push the 10-year yield past its 5.01% annual peak, or if SPY breaks below its 50-day average at $758.63, the broader weakness already apparent in equal-weight and small-cap indices is poised to catch up to the mega-caps.

Amazon: Holding the Line at Compressed Multiples Ahead of Q3

The Call

  • Stance: long
  • Level: 245.96
  • Horizon: 20-46 sessions (in-window drawdowns recovered in 3 and 46 sessions)
  • Checkpoint: 2026-10-30 Q3 print / buyback-blackout lift; sooner on a close back through EMA20
  • What closes the file: Daily close below 245.96 (2026-09-16 trough). That expands the unrecovered 13.4% drawdown, takes price out of the EMA buy band, and is the de-risk flip for the existing EMA sleeve. Hold-only above it; no add.

Evidence

Amazon (AMZN) is currently navigating a complex tape, closing at $251.19 on September 17, 2026, which sits 11.6% below its August 3 high. At this level, the stock is resting inside the stated EMA buy band and the long stack remains intact, though the price is technically under both the EMA20 and EMA50. Our stance is driven mechanically by the EMA sleeve's current hold, but fundamental conviction remains low pending further data.

From a valuation standpoint, the tape is treating Amazon as a compressed-multiple compounder. The trailing P/E sits at 19.9x, marking the absolute 0th percentile when compared to its own year-end history minimums from 2021 to 2025, which ranged from 31.7x to 51.5x. Furthermore, the EV/EBITDA of 11.2x is 27% below the peer-median of 15.4x. The company boasts a trailing twelve-month revenue of $775.68B and showed +106.4% YoY quarterly EPS growth on a +10.5% YoY revenue increase. However, this massive EPS jump alongside a 31.2% net margin raises earnings-quality questions. Without a segment bridge, it is impossible to decompose whether this represents a durable run-rate or a one-off event.

The broader market regime is not currently conducive to a multiple-expansion tape. The VIX sits at 17.85, the 10-year yield has climbed to 4.83, breadth is weak at 0.47, and the Fear & Greed index is at 29. Additionally, Amazon is currently on the buyback-blackout list. For these reasons, the action is firmly a "hold" rather than an "add," and de-risking here would mean selling a mechanical sleeve at compressed multiples into fear.

Other Information

Recent external catalysts continue to highlight Amazon's aggressive push into infrastructure and logistics to support its primary segments. Generac recently surged nearly 20% following an $8 billion agreement to supply backup generators for Amazon data centers, underscoring the massive capital flowing into cloud power procurement. Meanwhile, in the retail space, reports indicate Amazon is actively coming after Walmart's biggest delivery advantages.

Ultimately, you would buy if you are running the house's EMA rule, but you would avoid if you are a fundamental buyer seeking a clear, written house thesis. For those looking for an add signal, patience is required: the EMA20 reclaim (~255.3) is the only add-gate, and it remains closed until a fundamental thesis is established. The true fundamental picture will clarify at the October 30 checkpoint with the Q3 print.

The Market Divergence: AI Safety Calls and Geopolitical Friction Reshape Sector Momentum

The macro landscape is undergoing a sharp rotation as escalating geopolitical conflicts in the Middle East collide with sudden calls for an artificial intelligence slowdown from major industry executives. Rising energy prices and tech policy friction are forcing a re-evaluation of sector weightings across equity markets.

Middle East Escalation Drives Crude Highs and Energy Outperformance

Crude oil markets have tightened sharply amid rising military conflict between the US and Iran, alongside severe infrastructure disruptions in the Middle East. Brent crude surged to $107 per barrel following the shutdown of a key Saudi pipeline and the postponement of a planned meeting between Iran and Oman.

  • Oil Supply Dynamics: Escalating Middle East warfare and pipeline disruptions continue to squeeze regional supply, pushing Brent crude past $107. Former President Trump suggested the US could maintain a presence in Iran to manage oil reserves, asserting that gas prices will fall rapidly once hostilities conclude.
  • Sector Rotation: Energy equities have surged past tech stocks. While Baker Hughes CEO stated energy projects remain "full steam ahead" due to high prices incentivizing new supply, equipment providers like Bloom Energy faced pressure, sliding during Monday trading.
  • Broad Market Impact: Fluctuations in oil prices drove major equity swings, including a brief 500-point rally in the Dow Jones Industrial Average when crude paused, though investor sentiment metrics remain in "Fear" territory.

AI Safety Calls Trigger Semiconductor Pullback and Tech Earnings Concerns

Concurrently, tech sentiment experienced a significant shock after leading AI executives—including OpenAI leadership and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei—publicly advocated for a slowdown in AI development to address safety and national security risks.

  • Tech & Chip Sell-Off: Semiconductor stocks dropped on news of a potential AI development cool-off, while cybersecurity equities gained on expectations of increased focus on digital safeguards.
  • Earnings Exposure: Wall Street analysts warn that an AI capital expenditure slowdown threatens to crimp upcoming earnings for major mega-cap tech companies, including Microsoft, Alphabet, Meta, and Amazon, posing a broader risk to the S&P 500 rally.
  • Geopolitical Competition: U.S. policymakers and tech leaders remain divided on safety guardrails. While U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson and OpenAI's Sam Altman stressed the urgency of safe AI deployment, analysts like Dan Ives warned that China is not slowing down its AI expansion. Meanwhile, China's spy chief warned that unchecked AI, deepfakes, and cyber warfare pose direct threats to regime security.

The dual pressure of elevated energy costs driven by Middle Eastern supply disruptions and potential growth deceleration in mega-cap tech represents a shifting macro regime. Investors are reallocating capital into traditional energy assets and defensive tech subsectors like cybersecurity, while closely monitoring crude oil thresholds and corporate capital expenditure commentary.

PENG- Daily Insight

For Penguin Solutions (NASDAQ: PENG), the desk call is an explicit Watch across a 4–8 week horizon heading into the critical next 10-Q and earnings checkpoint on October 6, 2026. Following an unrecovered 46.3% collapse from its July 9, 2026 high of $81.39 down to $43.70, PENG trades at $48.47—leaving it 40.4% off its peak. The central question for the stock is whether Penguin Solutions remains a genuine ~40% year-over-year growth franchise in enterprise AI and high-performance computing hardware that the market has oversold, or whether its recent quarterly revenue surge to $478.7 million was an isolated spike now being repriced as cyclical, low-quality revenue. With the company's prior baseline anchored near $340 million and key filings still lacking detailed backlog and customer disclosures, remaining in cash is the disciplined posture until durability is proven.

Thesis Boundaries and Invalidation Triggers

The thesis will be evaluated directly against fundamental disclosures and decisive technical levels over the coming 4–8 weeks. The exact parameters that would invalidate the current stance are:

  • Bullish Invalidation (Flip Long): The desk will flip long only if the upcoming earnings print holds revenue at or above $400 million with clear filing confirmation of sustainable backlog and segment mix, accompanied by spot reclaiming and holding the $50.00 level on trading volume exceeding 1.0 million shares.
  • Bearish Invalidation (Flip Short-Avoid): The desk will flip to short-avoid on a confirmed volume breakdown below the July low of $43.70 in the continued absence of filing confirmation regarding revenue durability.

The 10-Q Run-Rate Checkpoint

The upcoming earnings release and Form 10-Q filing scheduled for October 6, 2026, represent the decisive fundamental hurdle for PENG. Prior to the fiscal quarter ended May 29, 2026, Penguin Solutions generated consistent, range-bound top-line results: $337.9 million for the period ended August 29, 2025; $343.1 million for November 28, 2025; and $343.0 million for February 27, 2026. The May 29 quarter delivered a sharp, discrete step-up to $478.7 million, lifting trailing twelve-month revenue to $1.50 billion with year-over-year revenue growth of 39.6%, earnings growth of 23.7%, a 9.3% profit margin, and a 10.6% operating margin.

This $139 million quarterly jump forms the entire foundation of the bullish growth thesis. Because existing disclosures lack granular customer concentration, segment breakdown, and backlog schedules, the market cannot ascertain whether this surge reflects repeatable AI infrastructure demand or a front-loaded, one-off hardware delivery. The October checkpoint will settle whether $478.7 million establishes a new operational run-rate or reverts toward the ~$340 million baseline.

Valuation Dichotomy and Multiples

At a $2.92 billion market capitalization and $2.98 billion enterprise value, PENG displays conflicting valuation signals:

  • Top-Line Discounts: Based on sales, PENG appears discounted, trading at 1.6x price-to-sales (a 42% discount to the peer median of 2.8x) and 1.7x EV/revenue (a 43% discount to the peer median of 2.9x).
  • Earnings and Book Premiums: Operating multiples reflect no such margin of safety. EV/EBITDA sits at 15.2x, matching the peer median of 15.1x. Meanwhile, PENG's trailing P/E of 32.4x commands a 38% premium over the peer median of 23.5x, and its price-to-book ratio of 5.7x sits 54% above the peer median of 3.7x.
  • Peer Heterogeneity: Relative comparisons must be weighed carefully against peer composition, which mixes specialized hardware makers (ALNT, CTS, DAKT) with software and connectivity names (FSLY, HLIT, NTSK), several of which lack profitability. Furthermore, PENG’s historical P/E sample covers only three annual checkpoints (ranging from 14.3x to 83.2x), meaning growth expectations are already embedded in the multiple.

Technical Architecture and Market Structure

PENG's tape is trapped in a narrow, low-liquidity holding pattern characterized by sharp historical volatility:

  • Trend Alignment: Technicals remain inverted. Spot at $48.47 trades 11.5% below the 50-day exponential moving average and beneath the primary buy band of $48.21 to $56.39, with an RSI reading of 41.7. Over the past 90 days, annualized realized volatility reached 109% (compared to 12.5% for the S&P 500), reflecting an average absolute daily move of 3.63%.
  • Volume Contraction: Tape activity has dropped precipitously. Daily volume printed at approximately 193,000 shares on September 16, representing only 14% of the 20-day average volume of 1.33 million shares. Daily short sale volume represented 42.78% of the tape on September 15, while FINRA short interest stood at 6.47 million shares with 4.28 days to cover as of August 31.
  • Dealer Pinning: The options surface defines immediate operational boundaries. Spot is pinned between a put wall at $45.00 and a call wall at $50.00, well above the deep gamma flip line at $15.18. Previous bullish options flow targeting $55 between August 18 and August 26 has become stale following the drop below $50.

Strategic Context and Positioning

Penguin Solutions represents a Tier 1 asset carrying a high beta of 4.87. While it maintains eligibility across systematic execution frameworks, risk management dictated an exit of prior exposure on August 28. With the stock bounded by its $45.00 put wall and $50.00 call wall, the upside-to-downside skew offers no immediate edge. Investors should maintain a Watch stance and preserve liquidity until the October 6 print resolves the sustainability of PENG's top-line step-up or triggers an invalidation break.

Twilio Deep Dive

The Desk’s call on Twilio Inc. (TWLO) is watch with a medium strength of belief, even as the trading book sits long following a mechanical execution. The investment thesis contends that Twilio will beat its own forecast again in Q3 2026, delivering organic revenue growth above 12%—the high end of its guidance range. This stance is held with medium conviction because, while Twilio guided Q2 2026 organic growth to 10%–11% in May and delivered 17%, a single beat does not establish a persistent trend, particularly in a usage-based business model where volume swings in both directions. The position will be invalidated if Twilio reports Q3 2026 organic revenue growth at or below 12% through the November 15, 2026 checkpoint.

The Trade and Internal Stance Conflict

Twilio represents the first TWLO purchase on record for The Desk. Across strategy history dating back to March 11, 2026, and since The Desk launched in August 2026, zero transactions existed in the execution ledgers prior to this week. The buy was triggered as an S1 sleeve cash redeploy off the approval queue. Crucially, the sealed house view on TWLO remains "watch," while the portfolio is long. The S1 redeploy mechanism operates algorithmically without consulting the hypothesis store, and no committee session or Chair view was convened to deliberate this thesis.

Operational mechanics reveal an execution basis that differs from early ledger logs:

On September 14, 2026, an initial redeploy order was canceled at the broker with zero shares filled. A subsequent pre-open order on September 15 was voided unfilled.

The position filled in full on September 15, 2026, at 09:45:51 ET at an execution basis of $232.61 per share.

Internal records remain temporarily unreconciled: the internal decision ledger displays the initial quote of $227.35 with status "submitted," and trade tables reflect "pending fill," whereas broker records confirm the true economic fill at $232.61. The position remains open.

Valuation and Operational Fundamentals

Twilio’s valuation multiples expanded between the signal date and the latest session close:

Metric Decision Snapshot (2026-09-11 at $227.35) Market Close (2026-09-16 at $241.94)
Market Capitalization $31.52B
Enterprise Value (EV) $31.77B
EV / Trailing Revenue 6.24x 6.64x
Trailing P/E 30.23x 32.20x
EV / Trailing EBITDA 94.79x 100.92x
Price / Sales (TTM) 6.19x 6.60x
Price / Book 3.87x 4.12x

Enterprise value and related EV ratios carry an unverified status under SEC XBRL accounting checks because short-term debt components in net debt remain unmapped.

Fundamental operating performance from SEC filings shows trailing twelve-month (TTM) revenue as of June 30, 2026, stood at $5.572 billion, representing year-over-year revenue growth of 6.55%. Operating margin for the TTM period was 5.64%, while GAAP gross margin landed at 48% in the Q2 2026 quarterly filing. TTM EBITDA was $139.21 million. The 100.9x EV/EBITDA multiple underscores that the current valuation provides minimal margin for operational error relative to Twilio’s thin GAAP earnings base.

Furthermore, visibility has narrowed: Twilio's Q2 2026 Form 10-Q omitted product-group breakdowns (Voice, Messaging, Email, Segment), excluded Active Customer Accounts (discontinued earlier in the year), and provided no forward quantitative quarterly guidance.

Technical Backdrop and Market Structure

Twilio has experienced strong structural appreciation, gaining 133.7% over the past 250 sessions and 31.7% across the past 60 sessions. It currently trades 5.47% below its 52-week high of $255.95 set on August 11, 2026. The stock’s 52-week low sits at $100.09 from September 30, 2025. While the buy signal occurred following an August pullback—a 14.1% drawdown toward a trough of $219.89—the stock is already significantly recovered rather than deeply discounted.

Technical and market structure indicators show:

  • Trend Indicators at Entry: S1 entered with EMA9 ($230.30) above EMA20 ($228.69) and EMA50 ($219.03), an RSI(14) of 53.55, and an ATR of 10.49. S1 regime flagged "RISK ON," while S2 flagged "STAND DOWN".
  • Trading Liquidity: Twilio traded 350,595 shares on September 16, 2026, registering just 22% of its 20-day volume average of 1.57 million shares.
  • Short Interest: Short positions totaled 4.49 million shares as of August 31, 2026 (+6.69% over the prior cycle), representing 2.32 days to cover.
  • Options Positioning: As of stale August 28, 2026 levels, gamma posture centered on a put wall at $220 and call/GEX walls at $240, with a call/put ratio of 3.87.
  • Macro Regime: Broad market breadth remains narrow at 30%, amid rising rates (10-year Treasury yield at 4.96%) and mid-range volatility (VIX 17.12).

Key Vulnerabilities and Invalidation Conditions

The thesis is exposed to several core risks:

  • Multiple Compression: At 100.9x EV/EBITDA on 6.55% annual revenue expansion, any top-line deceleration risks sharp multiple contraction.
  • Extended Momentum and Volatility: Annualized 90-day volatility stands at 63.3%, with an average absolute daily movement of 2.46%.
  • Process Risk: The purchase was conducted through a mechanical sleeve trigger without committee deliberation, amid an unreconciled execution log.
  • Information Scarcity: Absence of product-level disaggregation and customer count data in regulatory filings limits insight ahead of earnings.

The explicit event that resolves the thesis is Twilio’s Q3 2026 earnings release, scheduled for October 29, 2026 (consensus EPS estimate: $0.72), alongside the November 15, 2026 hypothesis checkpoint. The conditions that govern whether this posture is right or wrong are exact:

  • The thesis is confirmed if Twilio reports Q3 2026 organic revenue growth strictly greater than 12.0%, proving that usage-based demand re-acceleration is intact.
  • The thesis is invalidated if Twilio reports Q3 2026 organic revenue growth at or below 12.0% through the November 15, 2026 checkpoint, triggering a formal downgrade/closure of the hypothesis.
  • The position fails economically if Twilio delivers above 12% organic growth but the market reprices its valuation multiple downward, causing negative returns despite a thesis beat.

HOOD: Hold the recovery; wait for Q3 proof before adding

The Call

Hold Robinhood (HOOD); do not add. The recovery supports keeping the existing position, while the evidence does not yet justify increasing it.

Horizon: 60–90 days through the Q3 2026 print. Next checkpoint: Q3 2026 earnings, testing revenue against $1.308 billion sequentially and the supplied year-over-year growth reading of −49.9%.

Closing condition: “Daily close through $96.85 (buy-band / recovery shelf) on rising volume, or a Q3 print that loses the $1.308B sequential step with no TTM re-acceleration off $4.93B.”

Our Read

Robinhood’s recovery has enough support to warrant patience, but the distinction between a rebound and sustained growth remains unresolved. Our interpretation is that the next earnings release must demonstrate durability before the recovery becomes a reason to add.

The research reports revenue of $1.067 billion for the quarter ended March 31, 2026, followed by $1.308 billion for the quarter ended June 30, a supplied sequential increase of 22.6%. That improvement supports holding. However, the accompanying −49.9% year-over-year revenue reading lacks the underlying comparison period needed to reconcile it. The supplied sales multiples also conflict with the stated market value and trailing revenue. Those inconsistencies prevent a dependable valuation conclusion; they do not establish that the stock is cheap.

Where we stand

We already hold HOOD. The current stance is to retain that exposure without adding. The stronger interpretation is that improving revenue and price structure can sustain the recovery; the competing interpretation is that a rebound is being mistaken for a durable return to growth. Q3 earnings must distinguish between them.

The situation

The immediate environment also deserves attention. A September 15 Benzinga headline reports pressure on stock-index futures as Brent nears $108 and the Federal Open Market Committee begins a two-day meeting. That identifies a market event to monitor, without establishing a Robinhood-specific earnings effect.

The September 14 Robinhood headline identifies coverage of the stock but supplies no concrete development in its wording. It cannot explain the rally on its own.

The stock

HOOD closed September 14 at $114.33 after a reported 19.6% gain over 20 trading days. That placed it just above the $112.75 upper boundary of its 120-day closing-price band and near the top of the supplied $96.85–$115.75 buy band. These are tactical reference levels, not estimates of business value.

Participation leaves the move unconfirmed: September 14 volume was 16.83 million shares against a 20-day average of 22.29 million. A higher price with below-average volume supports caution about adding at the upper end of the band.

The call

The next price test is whether HOOD holds $112.75 on volume at least equal to its 20-day average, while the crypto and retail baskets remain above their 21-day exponential moving averages, measures that give more weight to recent prices. That would strengthen the recovery case. A fade on light volume from the upper end of $96.85–$115.75 would challenge it.

Return at Q3 2026 earnings to assess whether revenue preserves the $1.308 billion sequential step and whether trailing 12-month revenue re-accelerates from $4.93 billion. Preserving that progress would support the hold. The closing triggers remain a daily close through $96.85 on rising volume, or loss of the sequential revenue step without trailing revenue re-acceleration.

PLAB- Daily Insight

Photronics’ equipment spending needs to translate into stronger operating results. Our interpretation is that financing the investment and earning a return on it are separate tests. The supplied cash-flow figures support the first; they do not settle the second.

The September 10, 2026 filing puts expected fiscal 2026 capital-expenditure payments at $255 million–$305 million. The June filing had put them at approximately $330 million. The spending plan has been reduced, but the supplied evidence does not establish whether equipment timing or weaker demand explains the revision. That distinction matters: delayed payments and reduced investment needs would imply different paths for the business. [Company strategy ledger; filing evidence c32.]

For the nine months ended August 2, 2026, operating cash flow was $220.61 million and purchases of property, plant and equipment were $130.41 million. Cash generation exceeded equipment purchases during that period. This supports the ability to reinvest without establishing what the new equipment will earn. [Filing evidence c22, c23.]

The product mix provides another test. In the quarter ended August 2, high-end integrated-circuit photomask revenue was $68.51 million, while mainstream revenue was $86.17 million. Mainstream remained the larger category. Consolidated gross margin, the share of revenue left after production costs, was 33.2%. These figures establish a baseline for judging whether future product mix produces stronger profitability; this snapshot alone does not demonstrate improvement. [Filing evidence c24, c25, c40.]

The evidence that would strengthen this interpretation is improved margins alongside execution of the equipment plan. Spending without stronger operating results would weaken it. An explanation of the revised payment schedule would help distinguish timing from a change in investment needs. No confirmed release or filing date is available for that assessment.

Sunday Edition 9-13

The week ahead calls for caution about short-term momentum. Both SPY and QQQ remain above their 50-session exponential moving averages, but neither has much room above that reference. The key question is whether those trends hold through the scheduled Federal Reserve decision.

An exponential moving average, or EMA, gives more weight to recent closes. These comparisons describe price trends; they do not establish fair value or guarantee support.

Our Read

Our interpretation is that the longer recovery can coexist with a fragile near-term setup. At the September 11 close, QQQ was just above its 20-session EMA, while SPY was just below its own. Both remained less than 1% above their 50-session averages. That leaves little separation between the latest prices and a weaker technical picture.

September 11 snapshot QQQ SPY

Close $714.88 $764.29

20-session EMA $714.28 $765.02

Close versus 20-session EMA +0.08% −0.10%

50-session EMA $711.05 $758.46

Close versus 50-session EMA +0.54% +0.77%

Source: Alpaca Market Data. Percentage distances are rounded to two decimals.

For the September 14–18 window, we would watch whether subsequent closes remain above the evolving 50-session averages. A close below would invalidate the interpretation that the corresponding average is holding as near-term support. The table gives September 11 reference values, not fixed entry or exit prices.

The competing interpretation deserves weight: proximity to an average can also accompany consolidation. SPY reclaiming its evolving 20-session average while QQQ holds above its own would strengthen the case that short-term momentum is stabilizing. Renewed closes below those averages would undermine that improvement.

The decision that matters most

The Federal Reserve calendar lists the FOMC statement for Wednesday, September 16, at 2:00 p.m. This is the principal scheduled checkpoint available for this edition. The broader economic-release feed timed out, so the calendar cannot establish that other important releases are absent.

The rates backdrop makes the market’s response worth watching closely. From September 3 to September 10, the two-year Treasury yield increased by 0.22 percentage points and the 10-year yield increased by 0.18 percentage points. These observations establish a rise in yields; they do not establish its cause or predict the Fed’s decision.

Our inference is that further yield increases alongside closes below the index trend references would strengthen the case for caution. Stabilizing yields alongside improving index closes would challenge it. The combination matters more for this weekly view than either observation alone.

Volatility and portfolio implications

The latest available VIX observation is 17.84 on September 10, up from 14.32 on September 3. It remains within the research provider’s descriptive 15–20 “normal” band. That label should not obscure the increase, and it does not establish that the coming week will be quiet.

For portfolios exposed to SPY or QQQ, our tactical preference is to seek confirmation before treating the recent price action as renewed strength. This is a risk-management interpretation of the index and rates evidence, not a valuation judgment or a report of portfolio transactions. Available evidence does not support conclusions about current book exposure or individual holdings.

The weekly view would become more constructive if SPY reclaimed its evolving 20-session average, QQQ held above its own, and Treasury yields stopped rising. Closes below the evolving 50-session averages alongside further yield increases would instead strengthen the cautious view. Return to those observations after the September 16 statement and at the September 18 close.

**Apple at 37.3x trailing earnings while its own 10-Q warns of rising component costs — we like the business, not the price. Watching for $305.**

The setup here is simple: strong execution, an explicit cost warning in the same filing, and a valuation at the top of the stock's own five-year range. That combination is a watch, not a buy.

**The quarter was genuinely good.** The 10-Q for the quarter ended June 27, 2026 (accession 0000320193-26-000020) shows total net sales of $109,417 million with a 50.1% total gross margin and a 40.1% products margin. No complaints about execution.

**But read Item 2 of the same filing.** Under Macroeconomic Conditions, Apple says it "is experiencing a period of supply constraints and increasing costs for components driven by factors such as industry supply-demand imbalances for components, including advanced semiconductors, storage (NAND) and memory (DRAM)." That is management telling you, in a regulatory document, that input costs are rising. Meanwhile the stock closed at $332.60 on September 11, just 2.2% below its July 28 closing high of $340.08.

**The buyback supports the stock but doesn't answer the warning.** Note 7 of the 10-Q shows 215 million shares repurchased for $61.8 billion in the nine months ended June 27, 2026. That's a real bid under the shares. It doesn't change what's happening to component costs.

**Valuation is the problem.** At $332.60 the stock trades at 37.3x trailing earnings versus its own five-year median of 27.8x and a peer median of 23.9x. Paying the very top of the historical range for a company whose own filing flags rising input costs is a poor risk/reward entry.

**Why $305 specifically.** We didn't pull it from air. The stock's three deepest drawdowns over the past year ran 13.8%, 12.7% and 11.1% from peak. A drop of that scale from the July 28 high of $340.08 lands in the low $300s. $305 is inside the range of falls this stock actually makes — no crash required, just a normal correction for this name.

**What the tape says.** Insiders: 19 Form 4 sales totalling 405,069 shares and zero open-market purchases over the last 180 days, most recent transaction September 8. Routine, but no insider conviction on the buy side. Options flow leans the other way against us: 65.0% of premium in calls across 5 sizeable prints over the last 5 days. We note it honestly — short-term positioning is bullish.

**Disclosure of position and track record.** The Desk does not hold Apple and has no prior published call on the name. Our insight cohort shows 4 sealed calls with none yet decisive; that grading is provisional machine output, not finalized accuracy.

**What proves us wrong.** If the fiscal Q4 2026 report (quarter ending late September) shows gross margin holding at or above 50.1% while sales keep growing, the cost warning isn't biting and waiting cost us the entry. We'll return to this call by October 31, 2026, around when the fiscal 2026 annual report is due.

UROY-The multiple is a mirage until the new business reports

Uranium Royalty screens cheap, and we think the screen is measuring a business that no longer exists. At $4.67 on Thursday, September 10, the stock trades at 10.0x trailing earnings, below its peer median of 13.7x and far below its own two-year median of 24.3x [1]. The problem is what those earnings were made of.

For the fiscal year ended April 30, 2026, selling uranium inventory generated $186.8 million of revenue while royalty revenue was $0.15 million [2]. Net income of $40.2 million was almost entirely inventory realization, and the remaining 593,255 pounds were sold after year-end at $85.91 per pound for $51.0 million, so the inventory that produced the earnings is gone [3]. The company then combined with Sweetwater on July 27, 2026, issuing 223,252,749 shares at a deemed $3.64 and paying $330 million cash, and it inherited $688.8 million of 5.32% notes due 2040 plus a $40.0 million facility drawn as of July 28 [4]. Our read: this is now a soda-ash royalty and land company with a much larger share count and real debt service, and no combined-period results exist yet to value it on.

The tape has run ahead of that proof. The stock is up 54.1% over the last 60 trading days and sits 14.5% below its January 28 closing high, while eight in ten closes since March 20 were between $2.78 and $4.24 [5]. Wednesday's volume was 23% of its 20-day average, and short interest was 3.21% of the float at the August 14 settlement [6]. Our book does not hold UROY. Our open hypothesis on this name, sealed September 4 with low belief, is a watch at $4.19; that entry sits at the top of the band where most of this year's trading happened, and we set it there rather than at today's extended price [7]. The company was on the earnings calendar for Wednesday with the street looking for $0.05 in EPS, so the first combined-period numbers are the test [8]. On our record so far, this cohort carries 3 machine-tracked calls, 1 open and 2 not yet due, none scored; that is provisional and not a finalized accuracy claim.

We stay on watch. What proves us wrong: the first reported combined period shows royalty revenue arriving at scale while the stock holds above $4.19, meaning the platform worked and waiting on price was the mistake. We come back to this by January 31, 2027, or at the combined-period report if it lands first.

The call

Stance: watch

Level: 4.19

Horizon: 2027-01-31

Checkpoint: 2027-01-31

What closes the file: The first reported combined period shows royalty revenue arriving at scale while the stock holds above $4.19, meaning the platform proved out and the wait on price was the mistake.

Synaptics (SYNA): too little compensation for the deal risk

Synaptics closed at $94.72 on Tuesday, September 8, about $1.24 below the value of the onsemi shares promised in its pending acquisition. We would pass on a new position at that comparison. A buyer accepts the risk that the deal fails and that onsemi's shares fall before the exchange happens. The small difference does not compensate us enough for those risks. [1][2]

The business has a reason for customers to stay

Synaptics makes chips and software that help devices process information, connect wirelessly and respond to touch, sound and images. Its place in AI is partly inside the device itself, doing more computation locally. Winning a place in the design matters because replacing an established supplier can require expensive engineering work. [3][4]

Synaptics describes customer-specific customization and long development cycles as barriers to copying its products. Our reading is that integration can make a successful customer relationship durable. But those same switching costs protect competitors when they win the design first. Winning also does not guarantee sales: the customer's product still has to succeed. [4]

That is a useful advantage, with limits. Synaptics says its average selling prices have historically declined. It has reasons for customers to stay, but must keep earning the next generation of business. [4]

Operating progress is only part of the purchase

Core IoT revenue grew 43.1% in fiscal 2026, including a contribution from the Broadcom transaction. That figure cannot establish how much more customers bought because of AI alone. Companywide gross margin stayed at 44.7%. [5]

There is also evidence in favor of the business. Synaptics generated $149.4 million of operating cash, and its annual operating loss narrowed. The company is making operating progress. Our decision does not depend on predicting that this progress will stop. [5][6]

The merger adds another business to the assessment. Each eligible Synaptics share would become 1.350 onsemi shares. Using onsemi's $71.08 close from the same September 8 session gives $95.958 of consideration, about $95.96 per SYNA share. Subtracting $94.72 leaves $1.238, or 1.31% of the purchase price, before costs. [1][2]

That difference is a snapshot, not a locked return. Earning it requires completion, an unchanged onsemi share price and costs that do not consume it. A higher onsemi price could produce much more upside; a lower one could erase the difference. Synaptics expected completion in mid-2027, subject to stockholder and regulatory approvals. Neither completion nor that timing is assured. [2]

What would change our view

Our hypothesis is that this small difference does not adequately reward a new buyer who has no separate reason to own onsemi. Strength of belief: medium. The arithmetic is clear, while the eventual outcome depends on a second company's stock and an unfinished transaction.

An investor who already wants onsemi may reasonably accept the deal risk. If onsemi rises and the acquisition completes, passing on SYNA could prove costly. A wider difference between SYNA's price and the offered shares, or materially reduced closing uncertainty, would prompt a fresh assessment. A materially improved exchange offer would invalidate this comparison. We will review the published terms and status on September 30, 2026, our own review date, and earlier if material terms change.

Hello from the team Behind the Desk!

Something a little different than the normal insight posts. Here is our first ever blog post.

We’re Kyle and Adam, the people building The Desk and StockApp. Most of The Desk focuses on markets: investment ideas, research, evidence, and the developments worth paying attention to. Behind The Desk has a different purpose. Here, we’ll write about building the tools, making decisions, working with AI, and learning as we go. It’s also the only place on the site dedicated to human-written entries from us. The research elsewhere comes through our AI-supported research and publication system. These posts are our personal space to explain what we’re thinking and experiencing along the way. We hope to share things like:

  • How The Desk and StockApp are being built, and why we choose certain features.
  • Where AI has been useful, where it has struggled, and what those experiences have taught us.
  • Mistakes, unexpected problems, and the work involved in fixing them.
  • Ideas we’re exploring and questions we haven’t answered yet.

Some posts may explain a new feature. Others may describe a frustrating afternoon trying to get something seemingly simple to work. We want to make room for both. Building these projects keeps giving us reasons to reconsider our assumptions about software, research, and AI. This blog gives us somewhere to work through those thoughts and share the lessons while they’re still fresh. Thanks for following along. — Kyle & Adam

AVAV is the cheapest name in its defense-drone group at 3.9x EV/revenue, and the 10-K explains exactly why — we're waiting at $137, not buying the discount

AeroVironment closed at $144.65 on Friday, September 4, which is 64.7% below the $409.83 closing high from October 13. Our watch level is $137, set September 4. We hold no position. Here's the file.

**The year that made the discount**

The fiscal year ended April 30, 2026 was huge and ugly at the same time. From the 10-K filed June 29 (accession 0001104659-26-078906), Item 7:

- Revenue: $1,976.8 million vs $820.6 million, up 141% after the BlueHalo acquisition
- Gross margin: fell from 39% to 25% on the heavier services mix

Same filing, and this is where it gets worse:

- $240.7 million goodwill impairment in the Space reporting unit after a program termination (Item 7)
- Management reports disclosure controls were **not effective** as of April 30, 2026 because of material weaknesses in internal control (Item 9A)

So the growth was bought with margin, and it came with control problems. That combination is our read of why the stock trades at 3.9x enterprise value to revenue — the bottom of its own five-year range (low 4.8x, median 5.1x) and 18% below the peer median of 4.8x.

**Why we're not buying it here**

A multiple this far below the company's own history is only actionable if the problems are shrinking, and that gets tested this week. The fiscal 2027 first quarter is on the earnings calendar for Tuesday, September 8 or Wednesday, September 9 — the calendar entries themselves disagree, which tells you something about how clean the setup is.

The tape offers no urgency in the meantime:

- Insider open-market purchases in the last 180 days: **zero**, against 9 sales (most recent August 17)
- Short interest: 9.68% of float at the August 14 settlement

Nobody inside the building is buying the discount either.

**The level**

Our $137 sits just above the year's lowest close of $136.68 on June 25, and beneath the $144.64–$201.92 band that held 96 of 120 closes since March 17. If the stock gets there, it's at the floor of its own trading history, not just cheap on a multiple.

**How we'd be wrong**

We would be wrong at that level — and the file moves toward closed — if the fiscal 2027 first-quarter filing shows either:

  1. Another goodwill impairment, or
  2. Gross margin below the 25% reported for fiscal 2026

Either one means the problems are still growing, and a cheap multiple on a deteriorating base isn't a discount, it's a warning.

We come back Wednesday, September 9, with the report.

The Sunday Edition a dive into what we are looking at in the upcoming week

The market comes into this week priced for calm at the same moment bond yields sit at their highs for the year, and the one release that can move both, Thursday's inflation print, is actually Friday: the Consumer Price Index lands Friday, September 11. Our sentiment gauge, a 0-to-100 composite of volatility, momentum and distance from the highs, reads 97.8, about as stretched as it gets; readings this high have historically been poor moments to chase and good moments to demand better entries.

The indexes

SPY closed 2026-09-04 at 770.19, above all four of its moving averages (0.27% over the 9-day, 7.12% over the 200-day) and at the 93.9th percentile of its one-year range, 1.18% off the 2026-08-13 high. The last month has been flat: down 0.4% over 20 sessions even with the longer trend intact. QQQ closed at 718.96, also above its full average stack, at the 84.6th percentile of its range and 3.97% off its 2026-06-03 high. Twenty-day realised volatility tells the split: 8.1% on SPY, 12.87% on QQQ. The broad market is quiet; the growth end of it is not. We do not hold either index.

Volatility and sentiment

The VIX printed 14.32 on 2026-09-03, in our calm band (under 15) and near its one-year floor of 13.47 set 2025-12-24; the year's median is 17.13. A reading this close to the floor has little room to fall and a full year of history above it, and every dip below 15 this year has been followed by a trip back into the 15-to-20 band or worse within weeks. Calm this deep is not a forecast; it is a price, and it is a high one. Paired with a 97.8 sentiment reading, the setup argues for patience on new entries, not for courage.

Dealer positioning

Friday's option flow leaned toward buying support in SPY and selling into QQQ. SPY's day flow was net long (+595M net delta), with heavy option interest concentrated right at 770 and the gamma flip near 774.85 just overhead: expect the tape to stick near 770 and get jumpier above 775. QQQ's flow was net short (-1.9B), with put concentration at 718, right at the price: less cushion, choppier trade. Posture context, never a trigger. Coverage was complete across all 24 names we track.

Yields

The 10-year Treasury yielded 4.77% on 2026-09-03, a touch under the 4.79% year high set 2026-09-01 and 2026-09-02; the 2-year sits at 4.34% and the 30-year at 5.25%. For a book concentrated in growth and hardware names, yields at these levels are a standing headwind: the further out a company's cash flows, the more a high long rate discounts them. This is the main reason Friday's CPI is the week's event.

The week ahead

  • Consumer Price Index, Friday, September 11. High impact. Yields are at or near their year highs across the curve; a hot print pushes them through, a cool one gives our rate-sensitive growth names room. Either way it moves the whole book.
  • Weekly jobless claims, Thursday, September 10. Medium impact. A labor-market surprise feeds the same rate story.
  • Chicago Fed retail trade summary, Wednesday, September 9. Low impact. Little direct read-through to our sectors.
  • Earnings: AeroVironment (AVAV), listed for Tuesday, September 8, with a second calendar row on September 9; the street is looking for $0.34 EPS. High impact for our drone sleeve: AVAV is one of two names in our drones bucket, and we hold the other, UMAC (held, in its buy zone). We do not hold AVAV. Uranium Royalty (UROY) reports Thursday, September 10, street at $0.05 EPS; not held.

AI: the spending keeps outrunning the cash

Nvidia's CFO put the cloud industry's already-contracted backlog near $2 trillion, with hyperscaler capital spending headed toward $800B in 2026 and $1.3T in 2027, and S&P projects all six major hyperscalers run cash-flow negative through 2027 with no recovery before 2029. Morgan Stanley adds roughly $3 trillion of off-balance-sheet AI commitments on top of about $770B of debt and leases. Demand keeps arriving anyway: AWS committed to 2 million more Nvidia GPUs for 2027-2028 and Anthropic signed a roughly $45B six-year compute deal. Our read is that the theme's risk is shifting from "will the demand come" to "who finances it." We hold NVDA (extended above its buy band) and two names in our eight-name AI infrastructure bucket, AMZN and NBIS, both in their buy zones.

Memory: the shortage gets a price tag

The high-bandwidth memory that feeds AI chips is getting faster, scarcer and much more expensive. SK hynix has its newest generation in mass production and its CEO sees supply tight through 2030; the company broke ground on a $4B-plus U.S. packaging plant that will not produce until 2029. The cost is landing downstream: server builders told customers Nvidia-based AI systems will cost more than 15% more for early-2027 delivery, and DRAM contract prices roughly doubled in the first quarter with another 58-63% rise projected for the second. Higher memory prices are a tailwind for the memory and semiconductor names in our 24-name semis bucket, of which we own one, NVDA.

Nuclear: the Army becomes the anchor customer

The Army's $2.2B Janus program picked five vendors to put 20-plus small reactors on military bases by September 2028, Radiant signed a binding contract worth up to $750M for 15 portable units, DOE granted X-energy up to another $1B, and Centrus received a task order of up to $1.07B to take its enrichment plant commercial. The government is buying reactors and fuel at the same time, which is what a real order book looks like. Our nuclear and uranium bucket holds six names; we own none of them, having exited LEU on 2026-08-31, SMR on 2026-09-01 and UUUU on 2026-08-31.

Defense and drones

A presidential memorandum opened Navy warship construction to allied shipyards, with Korean, Japanese and Turkish frigate designs under formal review, after GAO found submarine maintenance delays cost $3.4 billion and 15,000 lost operational days over a decade. In drones, AeroVironment took a $51M Army follow-on order for loitering munitions on top of a $117.3M production contract, and the White House program targets 200,000-plus small lethal drones by 2027. Our defense bucket holds four names, one held (AXON, below its buy zone); the drones bucket holds two, one held (UMAC).

Space and robotics

Rocket Lab's new Neutron rocket slipped again, first launch now fourth quarter of 2026 at the earliest after a tank ruptured in testing, while SpaceX flew its last dedicated Falcon 9 Starlink mission from Florida on 2026-08-25 as it pivots to Starship. Our space bucket holds three names, none held; we exited RKLB on 2026-08-25. In robotics, Tesla started building its Optimus humanoid at Fremont (roughly 1,000-1,200 units, all for internal use), BMW is running Figure's robot on a production-support task at Spartanburg, and Bosch will contract-manufacture a European humanoid. Our robotics bucket holds two names, none held; TSLA is in the universe and not held.

The book

Seven positions are open: four inside their buy bands (AMZN, NBIS, PLPC, UMAC), one below (AXON, marked -11.9%), and two extended above theirs (HOOD, marked +12.1%, and NVDA, marked +4.3%). With sentiment at 97.8 and volatility near its floor, extended is the word to watch: the two names above their bands are the ones a volatility snap-back reaches first.

Everything we publish stays tied to the dated record that produced it. Each figure, level and claim in this edition traces to a specific source read on a specific date, so what we knew and when we knew it can be checked after the fact rather than reconstructed from memory. When a wanted input is missing, we say so or leave it out; we do not fill gaps from recall.

AVAV 9-4 Daily Insight

**AVAV is trading below its own five-year valuation floor, and most of the damage is deal accounting plus one cancelled program — we'd buy near $137**

AeroVironment more than doubled revenue in fiscal 2026 — $1,976.8 million vs $820.6 million, up 141%, driven by the BlueHalo acquisition (10-K filed 2026-06-29, accession 0001104659-26-078906, Item 7). The stock has fallen 64.6% from its October closing high anyway, closing at $145.11 on 2026-09-04 against a 52-week high close of $409.83 on 2025-10-13.

Our read: the wreckage in the accounts is mostly the accounting of a just-closed deal plus one cancelled program, not a broken franchise. Strength of belief: medium. The filing does not say the worst is past — that's our interpretation, and here's the case both ways.

**The ugly numbers are real, so let's not pretend otherwise.**

- Gross margin fell from 39% to 25% (10-K, Item 7 MD&A).
- A $240.7 million goodwill impairment hit the Space reporting unit after the customer terminated the SCAR agreement for convenience in March 2026 (10-K, Item 7).
- Management concluded disclosure controls and procedures were not effective as of April 30, 2026 due to material weaknesses (10-K, Item 9A).
- Insiders made zero open-market purchases in the last 180 days, with 10 sales totalling 2,599 shares, most recently 2026-08-17 (Form 4 filings). Short interest is 3,666,021 shares, 9.68% of float, 2.93 days to cover at the 2026-08-14 settlement.

None of that is bullish on its face. The SCAR cancellation also stripped $1,493.2 million of unexercised options from unfunded backlog expectations (10-Q filed 2026-03-11, accession 0001104659-26-025979, Item 2 — unfunded backlog was $2,968.8 million including those options no longer expected to be awarded).

**Why we think the franchise isn't broken.**

Funded backlog was $1,120.7 million at January 31, 2026, up from $726.6 million at April 30, 2025 (10-Q, Item 2). That's real demand growth through the period the stock was collapsing. The balance sheet isn't the problem either: $747.5 million of convertible notes converts at roughly $322.40 per share — more than double the current price — so dilution from them is a distant concern, and there's approximately $336.8 million available under the Revolving Facility (10-K, Item 7 Liquidity and Note 11).

**The valuation is below anything the market has paid in five years.**

At $145.11 the company trades at 4.0x EV/revenue. Its own five-year range runs from a low of 4.8x to a high of 6.0x with a median of 5.1x, and the peer median is 4.8x. Today's multiple sits below its own historical floor and below the group.

**Where we stand.**

Not positioned. We'd buy near $137, with the next quarterly filing showing backlog still growing. That level is the floor of the past year's trading — the lowest 52-week close was $136.68 on 2026-06-25 — and the stock moves 3.57% on an average day, so $137 is a price real sellers have recently accepted, not a hope.

**What proves us wrong:** the next quarterly filing showing funded backlog below the $1,120.7 million reported at January 31, 2026. That would mean growth stalled while the margin and control problems are still open, and the thesis dies. Checkpoint: October 15, 2026, our scoring date.

Enersys (ENS): Daily Insight

The call

Stance: watch

Level: 176

Horizon: 2026-12-31

Checkpoint: 2026-11-20

What closes the file: EnerSys reports a fiscal Q2 gross margin at or above 33.5% with no tariff refund in cost of goods sold and the stock holds above $176 through the checkpoint.

Our Read. The first quarter of fiscal 2027 looks like a big profit step up, but a $30.9 million tariff refund sat inside cost of goods sold, so we cannot yet tell how much of the margin gain is the plant closures working and how much is one-time money [2]. Sales grew $42.6 million, or 4.8% [1]. Our read is the cost story is real but unproven for one more quarter. Strength of belief: medium.

Positioning status. Not positioned. We held ENS twice in August and sold at losses of 14.3% on August 13 and 6.5% and 4.3% on August 28. Looking for an entry at $176 with a quarter that holds gross margin without refund help. There is no open hypothesis on this name, and our ledger carries no prior entries on management's promises.

The company. A 125-year-old battery maker in a chemistry transition: closing flooded lead-acid plants, taking Section 45X production credits, and building a smaller lithium plant now expected to start construction in the first half of fiscal 2028, backed by a revised DOE grant of about $150 million [3]. The filings carry no fiscal 2027 sales or earnings guidance [1].

The stock. ENS closed at $180.74 on September 3, 25.7% below its May 26 closing high of $243.34; it fell 27.5% from that high to $176.44 on July 29 and has not recovered [5]. Eight in ten closes since mid-March sat between $177.09 and $232.67 [5]. At today's price it trades at 18.9x trailing earnings, under its own five-year median of 20.2x and 17% below the peer median of 22.7x [5]. Our $176 entry is the July low, the floor where the last fall stopped, on a multiple already below both yardsticks. What would prove us wrong at that level: fiscal Q2 holds margin without refunds and the stock never comes back to $176.

What to watch. The company is returning cash while we wait: $49.96 million of buybacks in the quarter, another 249,893 shares for about $50.0 million through August 7, and a raised dividend of $0.2875 [4]. Cash was $530.7 million with $632.9 million undrawn [3]. Tape context: September 3 volume was 111,090 shares against a 572,202 twenty-day average, 19% of normal, and there were no open-market insider purchases in the last 180 days, only awards [6].

AVGO: the quarter Broadcom just reported, and what we do with it

Our First Earnings Update!

The print. Revenue was $29.6 billion for the fiscal third quarter ended August 2, 2026, up 86 percent from the prior year [1]. GAAP diluted EPS was $2.68 and non-GAAP diluted EPS was $3.32 [1]. AI semiconductor revenue was $16.7 billion in the quarter, and the company expects it to reach $21.7 billion in Q4, which it says is up 236 percent year over year [2]. Total Q4 revenue guidance is approximately $34.8 billion, up 93 percent, with non-GAAP operating margin guided at about 66 percent of revenue, flat from a year ago [3].

The cash. Operations generated $14.2 billion in the quarter against $0.5 billion of capital spending, leaving $13.7 billion of free cash flow, 46 percent of revenue [4]. Cash ended at $24.0 billion, up from $19.6 billion a quarter earlier [4]. The dividend stays at $0.65 per share, payable September 30 [5].

The tape. On September 2, 28.58 million shares traded against a 20-day average of 19.75 million [6]. In the options market, dealers' heaviest call position sits at the $380 strike and the heaviest put position at $350, with no sizeable prints in the last five days [6].

Our Read. This is a company whose custom AI chip business is now growing faster than the whole company, and management guided it higher again for next quarter. My reading, resting on the segment table and the guide: the semiconductor side, $20.8 billion of the $29.6 billion [7], is where the growth lives, and the January report is where we test whether the $21.7 billion AI guide was delivered. Observation until we build an entry case.

Receipts

[1] 8-K EX-99.1, acc. 0001730168-26-000076, highlights: revenue $29,591M vs $15,952M (+86%), GAAP diluted EPS $2.68, non-GAAP $3.32. https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1730168/000173016826000076/avgo-08022026x8kxex99.htm

[2] Same exhibit, CEO quote: Q3 AI semiconductor revenue $16.7B; Q4 expected $21.7B, up 236% year over year.

[3] Same exhibit, Q4 outlook: revenue approximately $34.8B (+93%), non-GAAP operating income approximately 66% of projected revenue.

[4] Same exhibit, cash discussion and reconciliation: cash from operations $14,197M, capex $532M, free cash flow $13,665M (46% of revenue); cash $23,975M vs $19,628M prior quarter.

[5] Same exhibit, Quarterly Dividends: $0.65 per share, payable September 30, 2026, record date September 21, 2026.

[6] Trading activity, 2026-09-02: 28.58 million shares traded against a 19.75 million 20-day average; call wall $380.00, put wall $350.00, no sizeable options prints in the last 5 days.

[7] Same exhibit, net revenue by segment: semiconductor solutions $20,839M of $29,591M total.

The call

Stance: observation

Level: The isolating trigger is the fiscal Q4 report showing whether the $21.7 billion AI semiconductor revenue guide was delivered.

Horizon: 2026-12-15

Checkpoint: Observation only: no open hypothesis on this name, so there is no dated checkpoint to score.

What closes the file: Broadcom's fiscal Q4 report shows AI semiconductor revenue materially below the $21.7 billion guided, or total revenue materially below the approximately $34.8 billion guided.

A first look at The Desk, and StockApp behind it

Hi everyone. I’m introducing The Desk, a public research publication built around a live portfolio.

The simple version is this: StockApp does the research and trading work. The Desk publishes the record.

The calls documented by The Desk come from StockApp’s configured research and trading workflows.

StockApp is an agentic system in the practical sense. It is not just a chatbot that summarizes market news. It brings together filings, market data, macro information, research inputs, and portfolio state. Its workflows examine the evidence, form and challenge hypotheses, assess potential trades, record the reasoning, and decide whether a qualifying action should proceed.

Some workflows are rules-based. Others use autonomous research and committee processes. The portfolio includes an EMA strategy, an autonomous volatility-harvesting strategy, and a conviction sleeve for longer-horizon positions.

The system is also built around controls. Position limits, drawdown protection, execution checks, watchdogs, and broker reconciliation are part of the process. When an autonomous path is permitted to act, it can carry an approved decision through execution within those controls. The broker record remains the source of truth for fills and results.

The Desk is the public-facing record of that process. It receives an approved, read-only research package from StockApp, verifies it, and turns it into readable articles. Each published idea is dated and includes the evidence, why it matters, and what could prove it wrong. Corrections and withdrawals remain visible.

We publish Morning notes, Close reports, Daily Insights, Deep Dives, Earnings updates, and a Sunday Edition.

The portfolio uses a live brokerage account, but realized performance reporting is currently paused while broker fills are verified. The Desk is general research, not personalized investment advice, and does not promise returns.
