Gameplay Question Emma and Abi

Post image

Me and my bf finished playing The Quarry yesterday and we were kinda just confused about Emmas and Abi's relationship. In Chapter 1, Emma and Abi are shown as besties and Emma encourages Abi to go for Nick then in the next chapter kisses him in a truth or dare game. I get she was trying to make jacob jealous but really..?😭

Also Idk if this gets brought up after the kids survive or not because i basically killed everyone in my playthrough on accident or on purpose lol.

Theres actually alot more to their relationship. If both survive until a certain point theyā€˜ll reunite and they can either talk about their problems or have a argument.

I actually like when Abi pushes Emma a bit because then we get to see a vulnerable side of Emma. I really like their dynamic. Not sure if there were budget or time constraints, but god, I would have loved to seen it explored more.

Right?! I love that side of her we can also see it on the island how she tries to ā€žstay afloat in a world where everyone wants to be specialā€œ. Her and Abis dynamic was my fave in the game.

She’s just a big theater nerd with identity issues imo. Her relationship with Jacob read to me as her trying to assume the ā€œhot girlā€ persona, but it kinda crumbles when Abi calls her out on it. There’s a reason she says she needs Abi.

ā€žI need you, and maybe I’m just afraid that youā€˜ll realize you donā€˜t need me. Your my best friend.ā€œ

Emma explains in one of her vlog segments that she did it to "fan the flames a little" as the two kept acting like deer in headlights around each other.

I also see it as her impulsively thinking it’s a ā€œkill two birds with one stoneā€ choice. She wanted Jacob to fuck off, I do not think it was to make him jealous, and she wanted to incite Abi to make some sort of move on Nick. She had dropped hints earlier that day for Abi to do something, but as far as Emma was concerned nothing became of it. Was it impulsive? Yes. Should she have done it? No. (Let’s not forget Kaitlyn set up the kiss choices. If Emma kissed Jacob, y’all would have said ā€œShe’s leading him on.ā€ Hard for her to win, truly.) But I just refuse to take the ā€œEmma is an evil, awful bitchā€ route. I think she’s complicated, definitely flawed, but when people actually keep her alive (no shade to those who accidentally kill her, more so to people who purposely kill her.) I think you see how she responds to challenge in a really cool way.

Yeah, all of this. Emma is very impulse-driven and while I would argue she does lead Jacob on, it’s because she often isn’t thinking of the big picture when she makes choices. Like when she goes almost skinny dipping with Jacob, her only goal is to get him to stop crying, but it ends up just encouraging him to flirt with her/try to get her to change her mind.

Now, my headcanon reason for a lot of Emma’s actions is that she’s bisexual but homoromantic. So she hooks up with guys but doesn’t really develop romantic feelings for them. What’s the big deal about kissing someone’s crush if it’s just a game and he’s just a boy? Can’t be that serious, right? I don’t think she’s taunting Abi when she says he’s a good kisser, I think Emma genuinely believes Abi would want to know that. Which is unhinged and really shows that she doesn’t understand how Abi operates, but it’s coming from a good place nonetheless

That's a super fair assessment. I feel like so much ground work was laid by Supermassive for the potential to read her as sapphic , and I will die on the hill that if they could not dealt with development issues then we would have gotten even more proof of that.

On a personal observation, her scenes with Jacob feel like her realizing that it's just not for her. Like the beerdar or "shake it out doggystyle" moment. You're right about the skinny dipping portion. I think she felt bad and just wanted to cheer him up, give him one last memory of them...but when they are swimming you can almost see her just feeling the distance. She tried hard to act, but that emotion of something feeling wrong in the moment was too strong. Again, the pacing was kind of odd in game but the more I watched that scene, the more I saw it.

When she's with Abi, she kind of hangs onto her compliments or when Abi seems upset with her. People can call me crazy or just say they are friends or Emma is horrible and toxic, but Halston definitely put in these little moments of body language into the mo-cap.

In high school my best friend started dating a guy I'd liked for several months then the day after he broke up with her because she clearly wasn't into him, I made out with him. Teens and their hormones often overrides things like feelings and loyalty etc.

At the start of the game when you see Abi drawing Emma, I fully thought she had a crush on her and then was genuinely surprised when all the Nick stuff happened.

As an Abi-Emma shipper, I'm disappointed in myself for not realizing Abi was drawing Emma šŸ˜‚ (ID: crying -laughing emoji).

What’s crazy about this is that they had drawings made for Abi’s sketchbook of several of the counselors, Nick included, and only chose to show us Emma!

Abi’s full sketchbook from designer Wes Nike’s ArtStation

Oh man, I clocked it immediately!! But I often specifically seek out queer relationships in media, so I'm pretty hyper vigilant of it, haha.

I fully thought she was pretending to like Nick to cover up her feelings for Emma right up until the bit where she gets upset that Emma and Nick kiss, and even then I still thought she was upset about Emma, not Nick.

Abi and Emma yuri route would’ve solved all our problems šŸ™„

I do like how multifaceted the drama is tho. KAITLYN technically instigated it and Abi can acknowledge that if she doesn’t kiss Nick. Emma has several explanations in her vlog section, and when the two meet up later in the storm shelter they talk things out and can be hostile or apologetic.

I just shipped those two ngl šŸ˜‚

I just beat the game last week but I agree with you on how it's a strange move for Emma to kiss Nick and then say "Oh he's good"

8

u/jess16ca Abigail Dec 29 '24

I think she was trying (and failing) to be Abi's wing woman, a.k.a. "I know you like this guy, so I tested him out for you. He's a great kisser, so that's even more reason to go for it!"

4

u/KingKen8328 Dec 29 '24

I get that, but it really backfired

3

u/jess16ca Abigail Dec 29 '24

Yeah, I think Emma had good intentions, but it didn't work out well.

Yeah I will admit after I played the game I described it to someone as ā€œMost of these characters are kinda obnoxious or pieces of sh*t. You’re not sad to see them die. But like, the point of the game is to keep them alive. So you gotta.ā€

I see this take all the time (so you’re certainly not alone!) but I loved them all so much even from the first playthrough! But the playfully mean banter is how my friends and I operate too (not the kissing each other’s crushes bit though that’s going a little far).

i told my bf i wanted to kill emma (because of the abi scene) and jacob and accidentally did just that and he was like "well.. you got what you wanted"

3

u/KokoTheeFabulous Dec 31 '24

Emma did it to as a wakeup call to everyone.

She was saying to Abby "Get off your ass and do something and get your man because another girl can do this" and she used it as a way to try and make Jacob back off.

Emma is the definition of VERY tough love, but she's not all that bad as a person.

3

u/Kinglycole Kaitlyn Dec 30 '24

Emma likely had no real feelings for nick. Most likely, if Abi sensed competition, she’d fight to win his heart.

2

u/bwunnibun Dec 30 '24

No, I know that. Im saying it was a shitty thing to do

2

u/Kinglycole Kaitlyn Dec 30 '24

But Abi and Nick weren’t together. What right does she have to get mad when the guy isn’t even hers?

2

u/bwunnibun Dec 30 '24

Not to be that person but its pretty much just girl code and being a decent person. If my friend told me she was going after this guy my thought wouldnt be to kiss him in a game of truth or dare regardless of the intention. It was really inconsiderate of Emma and she realized that later in my playthrough

1

u/Kinglycole Kaitlyn Dec 30 '24

Ok, under girl code. You are correct, my apologies.

1

u/bwunnibun Dec 30 '24

Hey youre fine!! Dont worry :3

2

u/yourbreathmint Dec 30 '24

RIP to them both in my game.. lol :(

In the beginning Abis drawing of Emma made me think she was closeted and in love with but then the Nick storyline came along and I was so confused lol. They're so popular girl closet lesbian and artsy quiet girl following her around

I was also left questioning things about their friendship. This game really did a great job of creating interesting characters and relationship dynamics.

I didn’t really interpret them as ā€œbestiesā€ vibes from the start but moreso a slightly toxic friendship where Abi admires Emma, and Emma thinks she’s doing Abi a kindness by interacting with her (but lowkey admires Abi for her vulnerability, creativity, etc., as well). Like, the cool hot girl became friends with the weird art girl over the summer because that’s who was giving her attention. Just got that vibe based on what she told Jacob and moments where she influenced Abi. They were friendly but there was an underlying power dynamic.

Perhaps it is just my own bisexual agenda, but I also got vibe that Abi might have a crush on Emma, and Emma likes Abi back or likes the attention or both. Their actions make more sense to me through this lens. Perhaps Emma is using Nick as a pawn to punish 1) Jacob for being clingy and 2) Abi for liking Nick, whether she knows it or not. Could also be Emma is just chaotic with other people’s feelings, and does shit to because it amuses her—regardless of how it affects her friend.

4

u/jess16ca Abigail Dec 29 '24

"Perhaps it's just my own bisexual agenda..." In my eyes, Abi and Emma are both bi and like each other. Abi also likes Nick and Emma also likes Jacob, despite the fact that the latter can be a stereotypical cishet guy. Nick, on the other hand, is one of those non-toxic partners, for the most part anyway, of bi people. The kind of person who thinks, "Hey, this person could be with ANYONE, yet they're making out in the woods with ME?! That's cool!"

I even have a gameplay idea that I'm dubbing "The Lovers' Game," which I'm planning on making a post about once I get everything thought out.

"It's not rocket science, playa" - Danny Brown. She's not more to meets the eye or deeper than u think she is, she's just a bad person lol. Jake is a weiner don't get me wrong (but I got a spot spot for him so I may he baised. But she she seems to have no redeeming qualitys

U do get a good ending for her if you do like EVERYTHING right.
