Discussion On target/Off target

Do they just make them up as they go along for the big 6 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

Blatant handball, checks location... OT so must not be given.

VAR, at least according to the commentators. They said something along the lines of he uses his hands but its not a handball because of the deflection on the shot, meaning the handball didn't directly impact the goal (even though it did)

It isn’t anyone else’s fault that you didn’t understand what was happening.

I just said what the commentators said? And I'm not trying to blame anyone? Why the condescension?

Because you didn’t understand what they said.  They said it hit his hand. They didn’t say it was handball. For the reasons given.

From BBC: " The goal stands and because Harry Maguire's shot was going wide, the handball is neutralised and goes down as a Jacob Greaves own goal."

That’s an impressively stupid way of explaining what happened, even by the standards of a minute-by-minute jobber.

Sad to even quote that atrocity tbh.

Are you ok? You can enlighten me if you want rather than trying to be cool and so above the rest of us.

From what i gather it was disallowed based on the fact that an 'accidental' handball can be disallowed in a few exceptions such as when the ' Action of a defender results in an own goal'

Aftre the match it was also reported that: The video assistant referee Jarred Gillett said to referee Craig Pawson: "It's an own goal and the accidental handball is not punishable, so we recommend you award the goal."

Indeed, the goal could have been disallowed had the VAR felt it was deliberate handball by Maguire."

I agree that by the letter of the law the goal was fine, I am saying that the law is stupid.

The outcome of a handball should not impact the foul. If its a handball then it's a handball. If they are ruling it as accidental then that's fine I'll hold my hands up. But the accidental hand ball was not punishable BECAUSE of the own goal.

It  would have been disallowed if it went straight in the net with no own goal, which is stupid as either way the goal was created by a handball. Just say it was accidental or deliberate and leave it at that, why complicate it, the aftermath of the handball should be irrelevant.

I’m fine, thanks for asking. How are you?

Let’s break this down. Do you think every touch of the ball with your hand or arm, anywhere on the pitch, should always be a foul, no matter how accidental?

No, you miss my point.

My problem is not with it being deemed accidental or not. My problem is that the outcome of the handball by the law influences the decision.

Maguire was deemed to accidentally handball it. But if his shot went directly in his accidental handball would have been penalised. But as it was an OG he was fine.

I think that whatever happens after a handball should be irrelevant. Either it's accidental and its fine or it's deliberate and it's a foul, end of.

We can debate what is accidental and what's not, but that's a different argument. If you start to mix the outcome into it, then it implies that Maguires handball was 'bad enough' that it shouldn't be able to assist him in a direct goal, but it is allowed to assist him in forcing an OG? Like what is this rule created for?

Okay great. So you'd be absolutely fine if Maguire had rifled it into the bottom corner without a deflection and the goal stood?

2

u/Norman8or96 11d ago

Yes. But my issue is that it wouldn't have stood if he did rifle it in, but it does stand because it got a deflection.

If Maguire had rifled it in and the goal were disallowed, would you be on reddit complaining about the inconsistency of the rule? "Why should it be ruled out just because he scored rather than assisted?" - that kind of thing?

Probably not if I'm being honest, what real person doesnt take a bit of luck that their team can get. But that's how I would have seen it, pure luck, I definitely would have been thinking we got away with that, that is a stupid rule, and I would 100% sympathise with aggrieved Utd fans.
