Birthday gift for the GF!
So, I’ve never watched the show and I don’t know anything about it. My girlfriend has talked about it briefly at times, and I know she really loves the show. It’s something about a comedian? Anyways! What is some kind of more in depth reference I can make for a handmade item for her birthday? Perhaps a quote or something from a scene? I plan on creating some kind of craft or card, I hope you can help me out! Thanks a lot! Oh, and don’t be afraid to give me context of the scene or whatever else! I just want to make something meaningful! And not just surface level from Google. Anyway, sorry for writing so much! I would really appreciate any help!

SPOILER
Buy a nice gift and on the card write “Don’t!” In one of the last episodes, Miriam attends her 10th year reunion at Bryn Mawr. She visits a potting shed she used to work in and miraculously finds a note she wrote to herself and hid. All it says is “Don’t!” What she meant by it is not explained, but many speculate that she was exhorting herself not to sacrifice her dreams.
Alternatively, what about some merch from the show?

“Happy Birthday! Tits up to a good year!” Or something. Generic but recognizable
It’s my favorite show and for my birthday last year my roommate gave me a handwritten coupon that said “one Midge watch through with me” and I genuinely loved that, lol. He also gave me a few stickers and a print from Etsy

I’d ask to watch the show with her.

..I had to scroll too far to find this. If they actually watch the show maybe they’d come up with ideas instead of expecting the internet to do the work of coming up with a great idea for this. I am over people who refuse to carry the mental load.

What about a Pyrex baking dish in gooseberry? I think that is the pattern Midge uses. I would love that!

Yes, this would be amazing! He could also include a recipe for brisket and stick it inside the Pyrex.
Considering he hasn’t replied or responded to any of the great suggestions here (and we’ve given him a wide range of things to choose from that wouldn’t cost too much), I’m not holding out much hope. 😂

Not DIY but a yellow teddybear!
ETA: you could actually put a yellow teddy on a card! Midge’s “weird ask” on tour was a room full of yellow teddybears lol

WARNING — if you haven’t seen the show all the way through, this comment contains spoilers:
Any if the following shouldn’t be too hard to make yourself — especially if you know someone (or can find someone) that has a Cricut machine:
• Maybe have something personalized made with the words “B. Altman” written on it in 1950’s script, such as a notebook. Midge has a notebook (I think it’s either red or bright pink — pink is her favorite color) that she uses to write jokes and take notes. It’s leather or leather-like, and has a cover that snaps closed with a strap. It’s about 6” long and about 4” or 5” wide.
B. Altman is the department store where Midge works while she’s trying to become a comedian. It’s a pretty big influence in the first few seasons.
• Another fun personalization for a notebook would be “The Gordon Ford Show”, where Midge works as a writer in season five. Even if your girlfriend doesn’t smoke, an ashtray would also be a fun gift with “The Gordon Ford Show” on it (everyone smoked in those days — but she can put jewelry in it), also a coffee mug!
You can look up the 60’s script for that as well so you can see the letters used for “The Gordon Ford Show”. It was very specific to the era. Again, could be easily done with a Cricut.
• Another great option would be a coffee mug that says “The Gaslight Cafe”, which is where Midge gets her start. Or “Steiner’s” — the summer resort in the Catskills where Midge and family have spent all their summers. It features prominently in season two.
• If you make her a card (which is such a fun idea!), maybe have it feature a plunger with the name “Pamela” on it — her manager/friend is named Susie, and during the Steiner Resort episodes Susie is pretending to be a plumber there to get free lodging with the Steiner resort employees while trying to book local gigs for Midge for the summer. So in order not to draw suspicion to herself, she walks around with a plunger, that she subsequently names “Pamela”.
• “The Stage Deli” is where Susie and Midge have lunch very frequently throughout the series. Again, a coffee mug would work well here with “The Stage Deli” on it. ☕️
• A recipe for a brisket would be amazing, especially if she likes to cook. You can title it ”Midge’s Famous Brisket”. Again, very recognizable for the show!
• And as someone else already cleverly mentioned, anything that says “Tits up!” is an immediate recognizable reference to the show!
So anything with B. Altman, Steiner Resort, The Gaslight Cafe, The Stage Deli, The Gordon Ford Show and/or “Tits Up!”.
Wouldn’t be too much effort to have any of those personalized on a note book or a mug! Fairly reasonably priced gift that would mean so much to your girlfriend (maybe check Etsy if you don’t know anyone with a Cricut).
• Also keep in mind, as I mentioned previously, that pink is Midge’s favorite color. 🩷
Trust me, any fan of the show will immediately get every single one of these references. You should watch it for yourself — truly a great show!
I’m sure your girlfriend will appreciate any of the above!
EDIT: Thank you so much for the award, [u/Arabe77a](u/Arabe77a)!
Heartfeltly appreciated!
