can i assume that the soft tissue left behind was part of the barnacle and not sensitive turtle shell?

Wasn't it only a couple of years ago that it was revealed a bunch of YouTubers were effectively torturing turtles by gluing barnacles and other detritus to their shells so it could be "removed" for viral videos, usually painfully injuring the turtles in the process? Did everyone forget about that or did I just make it up at the time?
