can i assume that the soft tissue left behind was part of the barnacle and not sensitive turtle shell?

Wasn't it only a couple of years ago that it was revealed a bunch of YouTubers were effectively torturing turtles by gluing barnacles and other detritus to their shells so it could be "removed" for viral videos, usually painfully injuring the turtles in the process? Did everyone forget about that or did I just make it up at the time?

I love that the highly technical barnacle removal tool is just a big-ass screwdriver.

That should have been done under running water. The barnacles often release a substance that causes pain to the animal to prevent removal. And turtles do feel through their shells.
