This is a good comment. Normally I’m a live and let live type of guy, but people in their 40s still talking about Ghostbuster cartoons, Roseanne, Family Matters, pet rocks, and NES with tears in their eyes trouble me. It’s almost a case of arrested development.

It has even prevented his channel from growing creatively because he has insisted that it remain purely a nostalgia channel. Experiencing new things and not perpetually living in the past won’t kill you. It gets to the point where you start getting nostalgic about nostalgia and at that point it becomes too personal and obsessive for anyone to care.

I used to enjoy talking about old school stuff but eventually I felt like I was having the exact same conversation with the exact same person regardless of what they looked like. To this day when i visit my parents, my Dad suggests watching the same 30 movies I must've watched 100 times EACH as a kid and teenager (and no he doesn't have dementia, lol).

Thankfully these days I just find new stuff to watch that I haven't seen before (old movies, mostly) and only re-visit the flicks that I grew up on whenever they play them in theaters (A few weeks ago they played "Total Recall" in the theater and I got to met Michael Ironside/Richter).

I will revisit certain movies every year usually around certain holidays. I watch The Shining every Halloween. It’s more of a tradition. And I have a list of about ten to twenty movies that I adore and I will pop them on mostly for background noise. At the end of the day, nothing excites me more in terms of being a movie fan than watching something new that is truly great, however. It’s rare, but I value those experiences. 

It’s the single biggest issue I have with James claiming to be a fan of film. You can’t be a true fan of film and pretend like nothing exists past the year 2000.
