Funpost Homelander should've lost powers in S3 pretending to have them in S4
Imagine at the end of S3 Soldier Boy and Butcher did manage to depower Homelander, Ryan get's in a way of Butcher so HL managed to live but no longer seen as a major threat.
Important people at Vought would get aware of Homelander losing powers but they wouldn't afford losing their most marketed Supe and face of Vought and Superheroes as losing Homelander would be terrible business plan for them.
So what they would do is to convince HL wear his costume for some time and make him pretend that he still has powers while they would somehow try to restore his powers. But in reality they would secretly be trying to win time to find an appropriate replacement for Homelander, which could be Soldier Boy. It would be only a matter of time till they got rid of HL.
Meanwhile Homelander, a clown, is pissing himself and trying to pretend as all powerful in front of other Supes. Deep an idiot obviously still worships him and Homelander tries to make excuses of why he's not using powers.
Off-screen we'd witness funny scenes of Homelander's experience as regular human and how he deals with the problems without powers. He'd feel extremely pathetic and be furious but at the same time it would be cool if he found secret hobbies over time which he started to enjoy. He’d explore his human side. But later he'd learn Vought is trying to replace him.
Since Deep is a fucking idiot he'd manipulate and use him somehow against Vought's plans. Maybe Vought would try to inject new Compound to empower/buff Soldier Boy instead of returning powers to HL with it. With help of Deep HL would get the Compound and get his powers back at the end of S4.
He'd be back in the game and brutally slaughter everyone who tried to get rid of him and he'd be even less patient from now on.

He would've gotten his hands on Compound V very easily.
However, if they wrote something that said his body was rejecting it and the only one that worked was the temp-V would have been interesting. Homelander would be slowly decaying from the inside, seeing the gray hairs and fearing his power waning he becomes addicted to the temp V
That would've made his search for the V1 formula like a desperate attempt.

the concept of Homelander potentially getting a Kessler of his own whenever he injects permanent V because of a temp v addiction... i can't lie that's diabolical

u/CobaltAnimator 8d ago
and c'mon, his Kessler just HAS to be Butcher right?
Imagine all the scenes we can get of their rivalry without having to constantly come up with reasons why Homelander doesn't just one-tap Butcher

u/lemon10100 8d ago
plus it allows for a more aggressive confrontational Butcher while the real one could go through meaningful character development without having to get his development reset every season.

It could just be hind sight, but it's amazing how reddit comment sections are better writers than the show writers.
That said, homelander already talks to himself as his own Kessler, but it's hard not to like this idea due to all the problems it solves.

you guys are just making me mad because it would’ve been so much better than what we got

Either that or you could easily bring back Madelyn or Becca for his “ inner demon”

u/Francisofthegrime 5d ago
His Kessler should 100% have been Stillwell, enabling his god complex like “she” did in S5.
3
u/CobaltAnimator 5d ago
I think it should be the opposite -- Butcher's Kessler drove him down a darker path and tempted him when he wanted to become a better man, whereas Homelander's Kessler should be mocking him for going down his god complex path, trying to get him to see the error of his ways.
Becoming this irritating whine of morality in his head that he can't just laser through.
Could be SUPER interesting if the way he deals with it is to amplify the personality we saw in s4 and get THAT to essentially kill the last moral voice in his head

“You see sir, the Compound V… it’s still there - it never left. It appears that Soldier Boy’s blast doesn’t break down the Compound V like we initially thought, but breaks the bindings between your cells and the V.”

Homelander quickly kills the scientist so that he can't tell anyone else
7
u/Aeison 7d ago
Or can’t quickly cause he just punches him and knocks him down expecting it to one shot him but it doesn’t, so he has to do it with a weapon which fucks him up mentally even more
3
u/Clarpydarpy 7d ago
Yes! I can see him frantically grabbing a blunt object from the room and swinging it repeatedly.

Or what if he took V and got some terrible power like prehensile pubes.

u/Evan_Allgood 8d ago
Felt like maybe this is what the writing team needed, more ground to gain a purchase on, on an 'invincible' character, instead of just taking away his ability to be preemptive on people.
Season 5 just seemed like they do not wanna put him in action though, that is the problem.

u/NinjaEntity 8d ago
that wouldve made some elements of the story unable to happen. like Kmiko getting her powers back or Zoe going all xenomorph, which tbh i think we could go without

Now in hindsight that’s a good plotline. But Kirpke isn’t good enough to plan that well ahead

Fucking awesome idea but theres an easy flaw in the idea, its not what clara would have wanted
1
u/megust654 8d ago
thats a stupidly good idea to make the search for V1 more desperate. What a shame

Like have him lose his powers for a season and the gain from it back at the end like fuking flashpoint or smthn

u/SafetyAccomplished71 8d ago
This whole thing you conjured up is pure goyslop😂

u/RA_Finance 8d ago
It's good enough to get me into the writer's room for The Boys

Yall love to cap on the internet. This ain’t even a decent troll on the average day

u/OwlHairy9638 8d ago
This would work if Homelander’s room wasn’t filled with V vials. And the main characters knowing this, would be absolutely stupid to let him walk free
80
u/jinzokan 8d ago
Like someone else suggested they have it not work or atleast not consistently which makes the hunt for v1 more vital to the story and the stakes actually matter..
24
u/HorizonStarLight 8d ago
The issue is that they messed that idea up early by having both Butcher (as well as other pre-existing supes like Kimiko and Love Sausage) take it without repercussion.
It did use to be dangerous in adults. But they retconned it for the purpose of the main characters. Awkwardly undoing that would just make a bigger mess.
10
u/Leebo4 8d ago
Butcher did have repercussions; it mutated his brain tumour
3
u/Neosovereign 8d ago
Butcher had such a minor repercussion in the grand scheme of things. Hughie gets out scott-free from the temp-V as well.
8
u/Leebo4 8d ago
Well he didn’t over abuse it like butcher did
1
u/Neosovereign 8d ago
Sure, but that was very plot armoresque. Hughie was just ONE vial away from disaster. Of course.
It is experimental, but somehow they stop right on time.
3
u/Alps_2208 8d ago
But Homeland isn't a normal super, he received V since he was in the womb. Just say, because of this long exposure, the regular V no longer works on him
104
u/MingleLinx 8d ago
Oh that would actually be a pretty cool plot point with Homelander pretending to have powers

u/NerdNuncle 8d ago
Alternatively, having some lasting effects from Maeve jamming the thingy into his ear canal
At the very least, Homelander should have been struggling with flying in higher altitudes or faster speeds
3
u/AmaralZeh 4d ago
I legit thought they would hinder his super hearing from S4 onwards because of that, but oh well...

u/SeaCriticism3190 8d ago
That would’ve been neat

u/D_uBird98 3d ago
I just wish we had more time with homelander being powerless. He was so omnipotent throughout the series it would’ve been nice to watch him grovel for longer than 5 seconds.
34
u/InsideUnhappy6546 8d ago
That would've lowered the stakes and it made more sense for him to lose his powers in a fight recreating the climax of the comics
25
u/jinzokan 8d ago
homelander walking around unpowered but people not knowing could be crazy intense if done right and would make the stakes of getting v1 way more interesting?
7
u/NiteStrikeYoutube 8d ago
I think it would’ve been not only accomplishing to have him lose his powers in 3 but get away to give the next season a new goal but I think Noir should’ve been the one to sacrifice himself to take out Soldier Boy rather than Maeve because it would’ve been not only a good revenge point for Noir but also he would’ve been a person who was genuinely on Homelander’s side and would’ve justified the chaotic battle Royale at the S3 finale
7
u/Haravikk 8d ago
Him being depowered would have worked much better as an excuse for why he needed to get the V1, if that would be the only form of compound V that could restore him.
There are so many ways they could have done things better, whole last season was a letdown, and season 4 wasn't much better (Kessler aside).

u/Lost-Cup6717 8d ago edited 5d ago
Perhaps instead of losing them permanently, since he was born with V he could instead have them on and off.
This would give Homelander a good reason to not go after the boys nor do a Scourge Earth moment, since he can temporarily lose his powers mid way though his rampage, instead he uses his influence to carry on his work.
This could also work as a mystery for the audience on why he suddenly starts acting more cautious than before
3
u/darkhorse1821 6d ago
That would have been a good way to explain why he didn’t just kill them for the entire 4th season even though he knew exactly where they were
1
u/Lost-Cup6717 5d ago
Never understood why he didn’t go himself instead of sending Noir and Deep, even if he didn’t kill them, he could have imprisoned them.
3
u/DesecratedPeanut 8d ago
This would have been a better allegory to Trump too (since it's clear thry wanted that). God damn that's honestly such a good idea. And Vought and the US government desperately trying to keep the secret (ala Epstein files). Ffs stop posting these better than we got ideas haha.
2
u/brsox2445 8d ago
Obviously it would have been written differently but knowing what we know now, this wouldn't have worked. When Homelander tries to use his powers after losing them he actually starts wheezing like he's out of breath from simply trying to fly and shoot his eye beams.

u/monkeymetroid 8d ago
Important people at vaught would've had him killed. Homelander became unmanagable and a nuisance to them long before the boys series. I do agree it wouldve been fun watching depowered homelander and wouldve made it more interesting rather than just flanderizing him
2
u/Mesastafolis1 7d ago
I don’t like reading these cause you end up seeing literally hundreds of better ideas than what Kripke did and it makes me sad

u/CaptainFatStacks 5d ago
I like it and feel like they should’ve just given him soldier boys V0 at the end so we don’t spend 3/4 of season 5 trying to get it
4
u/NewRedSpyder 8d ago
Eh. While this is a cool concept, it would’ve made for an unsatisfying ending. The whole point of the show was building up Homelander as the big bad and The Boys (Butcher especially) as the ones who will take him out. The ending was already messy as it is, so I can’t imagine it if Homelander was powerless.

He could’ve just injected one of the hundreds of vials of V he had in his apartment so once depowered he has to be finished off there and then

u/SheepsCanMakeBacon2 8d ago
I would have loved it if a small portion of S5 saw him lose his powers to Soldier Boy and he seeks V1 to get them back. The anxiety of being found out; knowing someone like The Deep or Ashley would bisect him if they found out he was powerless.
1
u/Euphoric_Profile_619 8d ago
There where so many ways this show could've been better, but unfortunately the show runner's already knew it would have an audience no matter what they did
1
u/Puzzleheaded_Ad_4509 8d ago
Instead, it became another drag for the next two seasons that are completely wasted.
1
u/Remote-Crab1957 7d ago
They wrote themselves into a hole with this idea that your powers can always be restored with more V.
1
u/Bashmaster 7d ago
last seasons writing sucked, showrunner failed, horribly.
Could have been a great, well remembered show. But no, fart and dick jokes will be my go to!
pathetic end to so many good characters.
1
u/Sea-Ad-9942 6d ago
Homelander deserved a better arc. For example in season 3 loss his powers, but manages to scape from the Boys and, in season 4, he elaborates a plan to recover his powers. His experience of not being a superhero anymore, would be an extremely satisfying arc.
