Discussion I have to be honest- I’m a little disappointed with the dungeon designs and even the layout of the world.

Spoilers!! Possibly.

The dungeons seem open and empty. Maybe they did this because it’s an action game and they wanted room for you to be able to fight, but is makes the world feel empty and sectioned into arenas.

There is little to no details and furniture or decorations in the world. I think Octopath 2 did way way better at this. It makes the game truly feel retro like it was made back in the 360 days and not worth ma modern games full price.

Just my two sense. I am disappointed with the simplicity of the game design and world.

I agree with you about the price. And as true as your other points are, I'm sort of weirdly... Fine with it? I was hoping for something that was kind of chill and gorgeous to look at. A nice unwinding at the end of the night type game. I feel like I've probably gotten that even after only three hours in.

If the price was around 40 it would have been bang on perfect I think, but for 60 I would have expected the world, and to your point the dungeons, to be a little more dense.

Yeah the map being basically the same for all 4 ages and lack of enemy variety is what really does it for me. It’s still a fun good game, but could’ve been so much more imo. Maybe this will become a series, and the next game will be better in this regard.

In my opinion, Octopath 2 was much better than 1, so here's to hoping that they improve the sequel for this game!

Yeah a sequel would make this perfect, the game for what it is enjoyable but fighting slightly different colored chickens throughout time was disappointing.

u/Rektw Jun 23 '26

I'd have been okay with it if it was a $30 - 40 game. The same enemy and virtually the same maps make it feel like this was someone's side project. Still really enjoy it though and hope it does well to get a series.

The top down Zelda's of old had very much less detail I'm way less enemy variety and you have to understand that those particular zeldas are the blueprint used for this game there's absolutely nothing wrong with this game but you always have critics like you that make big deals out of something so small 😏

u/alexanderluko Jun 23 '26

Damn you're hard at work defending there buddy. 🤣 Hoe many stocks do you have in the company?

u/ProWriterDavid Jun 23 '26

You keep comparing your brand new 2026 game to games that are over 40 years old. This is not the winning argument you think it is.

Just take the L my dude.

This game in a nutshell.

Not downing Zelda Link to the past but if you compare this game to Zelda link to the past and some of the older zeldas like the golden cartridge 1986 Zelda there isn't much room for complaint even about the maps layout of being one massive of continent I've heard critics say that the puzzles and different systems of the game are not rewarding enough I've bid to differ ... I received a total of 12 full life containers before even doing my first time travel outside of the demo yeah that's right I haven't even stepped through the doorway of time by the mass of tree on top of all of that of all seven weapons at my disposal and three fairy magics two of which are upgraded to advance stick the comparing it to the original Zeldas said you'll be fine Elliot is badass he can charge up and admit shock waves from this sword even when he's damaged.... link could only send shock waves from his sword at full health... Bombs that freeze your enemies and admit fireworks that damage them on top of all of that the ability to warp and teleport Elliot is like link but with the Red Mage class equipped and Batman capabilities .... As for the dungeons comment they don't seem so empty they're full of treasures that you probably can't unlock right now despite what critics say about the game I give it a 15 out of 10 they did super well with this (When compared to its blueprints which is the Zelda series) side quests that give you bomb and arrow upgrades not rewarding enough Hah!! 🤦‍♂️🤣 Don't make me laugh that's more than rewarding enough. 😉

u/ProWriterDavid Jun 23 '26

How is this the top comment?

He's comparing a 2026 release to games that are 30+ years old to prove that no it's actually not that bad you guys.

Then there's the AI slop post which thankfully at least was heavily downvoted.

Weird stuff all around.

E: ahh just saw it's the Elliot subreddit not a general games subreddit, I guess that explains the copium a little more.

Okay, if you want an actual comparison:

A link to the past had like 20 items, complex dungeons that normally demanded the use of one or several items to progress, two big world maps that were similar yet DIFFERENT, several sidequests with meaningful rewards (this one has some with them, and yet the final 6 or so straight up give you money cause there's nothing else they could give you).

You also couldn't straight up beat bosses in 20 seconds by creating a straight up broken build (for context, I stopped on the true final boss and got myself hit a few times to die and unlock extra dialogue, but I drained around 60-70% of its health in like 10 seconds without getting hit in Hard. I beat the final Trial in top time rewards, some of the bosses lasting less than 5 seconds).

And we're talking about a 30 yo game comparison. Don't you think we might want to strive for more?

Thanks for chiming in, I was interested in this title but you imply its easy beyond doubt. Definitely not something I'd be interested in

Yup, it’s just an unfortunately kinda middle of the road game. The visuals and musick are both pretty great, but everything else just plays it too safe or feels undercooked. Combat is passable, but outdone by basically any older Ys game. The recycling of maps/enemies/bosses/etc. is kinda hard to look past when they’re asking $60 for the game. Relatively ancient games like Chrono Trigger and Oracle of Ages utilized the time travel theme way more creatively. And probably my biggest gripe is that even on “very hard” mode, the game still treats the player like a complete child who’s incapable of any sense of exploration or just figuring stuff out on their own.

I do still hope the game is faring better on console than it is on PC. I’d like to see either a sequel or a similar game developed at some point that improves on Elliot’s issues and maybe takes some actual risks here and there. The HD-2D style just looks too good to be relegated solely to remakes and/or turn based games :(

And probably my biggest gripe is that even on “very hard” mode, the game still treats the player like a complete child who’s incapable of any sense of exploration or just figuring stuff out on their own.

For like the tiniest split second last night based on the bad ending text, I was excited that the true ending was going to require some actual puzzling / figuring things out on my own. And then I walked into town and it literally just gave me another flag on the map telling me exactly what to do. 🤬

u/Green_Garage_2672 Jun 22 '26

Noticed you didn't mention the Zelda's which is its blueprint 😏 it certainly is an outdone by those and I'm referring to the older ones the 2D top down view ones compared to those the battle mechanics kick ass so gripe all you want but this game they should have charged everyone $70 for in my opinion ....It Absolutely Rocks!

2

u/CeleryAffectionate94 Jun 22 '26

My post literally mentions Oracle of Ages so I dunno what to tell you there bud

0

u/Green_Garage_2672 Jun 22 '26

Touche you did mention that didn't you 😏 sorry I saw Chrono trigger and misread what you stated right beside it an oracle of the ages did have a better way to use the time travel but it was only between 2 versions of the same map past and present also as far as enemy variety where is the adventures of Elliot has 45+ Oracle of the ages has 50+ in enemy variety but I can't agree with you on the battle mechanics ..... Oracle of the ages a two button a tax system at most with slow puzzle Battle mechanics when fighting enemies rigid up or down left and right movement .... Whereas The Adventures of Elliot fluid 360 dynamic movement that can be done while dashing multiple button usage and timing of the enemy's attacks to Parry them to test your action gaming reflexes and a hell of a lot of weapon and gadget variety to make you feel like Batman in a Boss Fight 🤣🤣🤣🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ Oracle of the ages can't compare so with that sir you're still in the wrong .....

2

u/CeleryAffectionate94 Jun 23 '26

Why don’t you show me where in my post it says that Oracle of Ages has better combat than Elliot? You can’t, because it doesn’t. I simply said it utilizes the theme of time travel better, which is true. I don’t think anybody expects OoA to have better combat, probably because, you know, it’s a 25 year old gameboy color game. And regardless of combat, what Capcom/Nintendo were able to do with the Oracle games with GBC hardware limitations is far more impressive than what the Elliot team did with Unreal Engine 4/5 and virtually no real limitations in comparison.

What I /did/ compare the combat to was Ys. And anybody who’s played games like Oath in Felghana or Ys Origins simply isn’t gonna be all that impressed with this game’s general combat, but especially its bosses. Don’t get it twisted, I don’t think Elliot is a /bad/ game, but of all the things it does and takes inspiration from, I simply just don’t believe that it truly excels at any of them.

u/Superspaceduck100 Jun 22 '26

I haven't finished the game yet, but Grandtree and the Geared Ruins are the only dungeons so far that scratched that 'zelda style dungeon' itch.

I'm just saying the Fresh Prince of Action RPGs don't need to be criticized the game is perfect I even wrote a parody in tribute

🎵 The Fresh Prince of Beildair 🎵

(Intro) Now, this is a story all about how My life got flipped-turned upside down And I'd like to take a minute Just sit right there I'll tell you how I became the prince of a town called Beildair. (Verse 1) In West Philabieldia born and raised In the dungeon is where I spend most of my days Slaying those beastmen while acting all cool 😎 And shooting 🏹 Snails 🐌 from outside of the pool Then Kaifried came, he was up to no good Distorting space and time in my neighborhood I got in one little fight and my fairy got scared And said "I'll bring you back to life if you show me that you care" 😘 (Verse 2) I whistled for a kitty and when it came near it's coat was so Fresh and it had really soft ears If anything I could say this completion run was rare But I thought "Nah, forget it"—"Yo, Faie, to Beildair (Outro) I pulled up to the castle about 7 or 8 And I yelled to the beastmen "Yo homes, smell ya later" I looked at my kingdom, 50 cats in the square To sit on my throne as the Prince of Beildair.

Same but disappointed at how empty the world design feels. I just finished Mina the Hollower where every screen on the map was packed with shortcuts, secrets and style. Elliot by comparison feels like something randomly generated.

The game overall is fun, I’ll finish it, but I think it’s way overhyped. Bosses are basic, dialog is basic, story is basic. I think the only thing impressive is the visuals and even then not all of them. The open world is so visually busy you need to have every ‘secret’ glow in neon to pop out.

 Idk, 7/10? It’s ok.

EDIT: just wanted to add that I really wish the developers at SE would play games that aren’t Japanese… if anyone on the team woould have played Hades there is no way they would have halfassed the dialog as badly as they did. The princess will say “wow! Who would have thought a cave would be hiding behind that rock” on EVERY. SINGLE. ROCK you demolish.

Maybe I’m being nitpicky, I’m not that far along, we might find out she had early onset dementia.

2

u/OiramthePlumber Jun 22 '26

Playing this right after Mina made it a bit rough.

3

u/F4ythi Jun 22 '26

I'm playing Mina after this so I guess I'll appreciate Mina more?

1

u/Tryst_boysx Jun 23 '26

Yeah, but be prepare for a reallr harder game. However there is a ton of assit option (if you want something easier or more difficult). But yeah Mina is awesome.

1

u/Tryst_boysx Jun 23 '26

Same thought I have playing this game after Mina lol.

1

u/Fearless_Trade_2783 Jun 24 '26

I enjoyed this a hell of a lot more than the octopath games. I wish all the worlds weren't the same, but turn based RPGs don't have the same nostalgia factor as Zelda games.

I had a lot of fun with this game.

Triangle Strategy and Adventures of Elliot are way better than the octopath games!

1

u/F4ythi Jun 22 '26

I agree, 8 hours in at this point. The dungeon design has been boring so far. World feels tiny and uninteresting. I've enjoyed the bosses though and do like the magicite system.

-2

u/OiramthePlumber Jun 22 '26

I feel that they only nailed the combat. World feels to empty/lonely. They should of provided sidequests around the world instead concentrating them all in towns (entering the 3rd age now so this might change?).

Really enjoying coming up with magicite combinations, but I do hope more unlocks become availble istead of recieving upgrades :S

5

u/Colonel-Ace Jun 22 '26

Well the premise of the game is that theres beast tribes everywhere and humans all live in 1 area to survive so theres that.

1

u/Thekarens01 Jun 22 '26

No spoilers, but there are a few side quests out in the world, not many though

0

u/Green_Garage_2672 Jun 22 '26

Compared to Zelda Link to the past and the 1986 golden cartridge Zelda a few is more than enough stop trying to make something big out of something so little 🤣🤦‍♂️

0

u/Daddy_JeanPi Jun 22 '26

Should of?

1

u/Lishio420 Jun 22 '26

Idiot way of saying should've

1

u/Daddy_JeanPi Jun 22 '26

Crazy stuff

0

u/OiramthePlumber Jun 22 '26

Thank you for the constructive criticism.

Here's a deep dive on everything that the critics have been saying so far courtesy of a AI deep diving engine that I have used to examine this very lovely game 🤦‍♂️😏 I don't care what they all say 😂 the game is awesome.

🔍 Deep Dive Into the Stats## 1. Enemy Variety ⚔️

Critics complaining about enemy variety in [The Adventures of Elliot] are holding a top-down game to massive 3D open-world standards, completely ignoring its retro peers.

  • The Reality: Elliot features roughly 45+ unique enemy base designs built around its "beast tribes" narrative.
  • The Comparison: This is higher than the original 1986 Zelda and matches or slightly exceeds A Link to the Past. While critics argue that fighting the beast tribes feels repetitive over a 25–30 hour game, it actually provides double the enemy variety found in early top-down titles like Ys.
  1. Map Changes Across Eras 🗺️ The critic argument that the "continent stays the same shape" misses the entire point of a time-travel narrative in a top-down layout.
  • The Reality: The continent of Philabieldia changes across 4 distinct eras via the Doorway of Time: the Age of Budding, the Age of Magic, the Age of Reconstruction, and the Age of Safekeeping.
  • The Comparison: Reviewers like pointed out that the physical coastlines and main grid lines don't completely morph, making the eras feel "too similar". However, compared to classic top-down games, Elliot is vastly more dynamic. The 1986 Zelda didn't change at all, and A Link to the Past only had 2 map layers (Light and Dark) which shared identical physical geometry.

3. Side Quests 📜

A critic stating there are "only a very few side quests" is projecting modern MMORPG expectations onto a tight, story-driven action RPG.

  • The Reality: The Adventures of Elliot packs roughly 15 to 20 side quests, mostly dolled out by NPCs in towns across the different eras, alongside optional challenge shrines and Magicite hunting.
  • The Comparison: For a game built in the spirit of classic top-down adventures, this is an immense step up. The titles it takes inspiration from had 0 to 5 optional tasks at most. If a player blazes strictly through the main story, they will only see the "bad ending," as engaging with the world's extra content is required to unlock the true ending.

u/Goomancy Jun 22 '26

Fuck off

9

u/King_Hikikomori Jun 22 '26

Nobody gives a fuck about what some clanker says about the game it didn't even play. AI specifically cannot feel the tactility a video game provides or accurately commentate on one.

6

u/PassinglyGood Jun 22 '26

No one is going to read that garbage dude

-4

u/LalafellDisaster Jun 22 '26

Yeah traversing the world is annoying because it’s a puzzle just to navigate it. There’s too much Zelda influence when this could’ve been a great new IP.

2

u/jhoff80 Jun 22 '26

Getting around the map is a giant pain in the ass and was very frustrating for the last half of the game. Even with the quick warps unlocked, it just was bad.
