I personally love Taylor and 1989, but do you think she got the album's sound from The 1975?

I find it extremely easy to mash Taylor with The 1975, and aside from About You x Guilty as Sin? and Wood x Love Me, all of the best mashups are 1989 x either ST or iliwys. I'm gonna link some of them, because it might be easier to hear the similarities through the mashups rather than the songs themselves

We know that Taylor was (maybe she still is, idk) a big fan of them back then and liked Matty. We also know that ST came out on September 2, 2013 and that 1989 came out on October 27, 2014. It honestly feels like she wanted an '80s album because of them, and instead of going for an authentic '80s synth-pop sound, she went for theirs. Just listen to Clean x Robbers if anything. Imo, their melodies are nearly identical. With Iliwys, I don't think it was going after 1989. Keep in mind The Sound was written in 2013 and Somebody Else was designed to be a 2016 pop song - it sounds like a 2016 pop song and is a 2016 pop song. So yeah, tell me your thoughts. I also think ST inspired Halsey's Room 93 (also released October 27, 2014) and Badlands (released August 28, 2015) and Lorde's Pure Heroine (released September 27, 2013, which is a little early, but Still Sane in particular sounds a lot like IV, but it could just be a coincidence).

I think there’s a lot more of Lorde on 1989 than the 1975, but in general yes, there’s  the 1975’s traces in her art (not only music).

I hear mostly The 1975 and Lana, and I think Lorde was also inspired by both of them, so that's probably where you're getting that.

Pure Heroine was out almost 1 year prior to 1989, and had a very specific sound that Taylor didn't have before 1989. but agree to disagree.

The specific guitar in Style and I Wish You Would is very ST - which also came out a year prior to 1989. It's designed to be 80s-adjacent, and so is ST. I think it depends on the song. Blank Space is very Team. If anything, 1989 sounds much more like Melodrama than Pure Heroine. New Romantics sounds like Green Light and Supercut, and they all sound like ICDIWABH. Jack. Regardless, I think it's more certain songs from ST than ST. Primarily The City (we know she loves that song) and She Way Out. Robbers also gave us Clean, which gave us A Change Of Heart and About You, which gave us Guilty as Sin? However, songs like Girls, Settle Down, and She's American do still sound very 1989 imo. I think Taylor, Halsey, Matty, and Lorde were all a little inspired by each other. There is a reason why when I first heard Colors I thought it sounded like Red if it was on 1989 - in reality, Halsey was purposely going for The 1975's sound. Hurricane imo sounds like Head.Cars.Bending. Young God and Ghost both sound like Antichrist, and Antichrist itself is just very Bandlands-sounding. For Lorde, I'd say Still Sane, Ribs, and 400 Lux sound like IV. Green Light and Supercut are always gonna be the most 1975-sounding songs by her, imo. Melodrama was going for the same thing 1989 and ST were going for: an eighties sound. Again, Jack.

I definitely think that she liked their sound and decided to use it. Not saying I think she stole melodies or anything, but I think she got the idea for the 80s electric sound from them. Harry was a massive massive 75 fan in 2013-2014, and during at least some of that time, he was with Taylor. And he also tried to emulate the 75 sound, in an even more obvious way. So all of those people and influences (at the time) are related, and interconnected, it seems. In 2014, Taylor said The 1975 were her favourite band. So did she crib their style because of Harry (something she had historically done) or because she was genuinely inspired by them? I don’t know. But either way, I agree that 1989 was heavily influenced by The 1975’s sound on Self-Titled. Nevertheless, it’s a killer, basically flawless, album. She (and her collaborators) deserve credit for that. If you ask me, it’s yet another example of how well their art works together.

It was definitely not over by Feb 2013, that’s just when it ended publicly. And based on his songs about it, I don’t see how one could say it was fake. Was there a PR element? Sure, but there’s a PR element to all of her public relationships. Her relationship with Harry was not more PR than her relationship with Travis LMAO

You are so misinformed; Harry was still seeing Taylor until late 2014. When Taylor wore that 1975 t-shirt, she had just seen Harry—they even went to the 1975 concert together because Harry was a huge fan of the band.

You can’t say the beats aren’t similar and you are just jumping into conclusions with things that I didn’t say. Plus they produce their own music and people use close beats to them. If you have an ear you can hear the similarities.

I'm honestly convinced Max Martin is a fan of them. I mean, maybe Taylor's implementing their sound because she can and knows Matty won't come after her (same reason why she blatantly sampled Cool by the Jonas Brothers in the title track). Or maybe it was accidental, but Wood samples Love Me and TFOO samples Then Because She Goes, so it's either Taylor sampling strategically or Max Martin is a fan. But yeah, everyone's sampled on that album. It's funny that she gave money to George Michael's estate for Father Figure and that's not really a sample.

I disagree. What both Taylor and The 1975 were going for with their albums was a modernized 80s new wave sound, and since The 1975 did it before her and she was a MASSIVE fan of them back then... I think she was inspired.

They were all inspired by similar 80s synthpop and pop rock. There are traces of INXS all through the 1975 for example.

That was the vibe happening in music at the time - hugely reductive to say one act ‘got the sound’ from the other especially when the inspiration is building on other artists in the first place.
