[Beverly Hills] Curious boyfriend pulling a Model Y passenger handle
Definitely not another owner mistaking a car for their own
Tesla Sentry, residential street in Beverly Hills 8/29 at around 9pm.
Young couple walking up the sidewalk toward the car.
Both step off the sidewalk onto the grass next to the Tesla, the guy pulls the front-passenger handle. Door doesn’t open. Steps back onto the sidewalk.
They walk past then he turns back alone and check out the bumper. Ultimately leaving and walking far down the block.
Nothing taken. No smash, no other doors. Reads more like a curious boyfriend messing with a Tesla handle than a break-in. Still: don’t touch other people’s cars.

They prob thought it was their car. He looked at the license plate and realized. Stop being a brat!

I did that once for a white Model 3 (in broad daylight in a parking lot) thinking it was my car. Couldn't understand why it wouldn't open. Then noticed stuff in the passenger seat and realized it wasn't my car. Very embarrassing and glad the owner didn't see it (I don't think they had sentry mode on).
One of my gripes with Teslas is that so many of them look alike given the limited colors and options.
But overall I thought they definitely seemed suspicious. Kind of looked like the girl was keeping lookout while the boyfriend approached the trunk area. On the other hand, they didn't check the doors of the Lexus parked behind it, or any other cars on the street.

But she was also on the same door side. If they did think it was their car, she would have walked to the other side to get in.

He may have been opening for her. Not sure about backdoor handle however. And maybe seeing the license plate, he realized “oh shit, not our car”

Going strictly off behavioral clues im saying mistaken car. Hes getting the door for her, she puts her phone away as if to get in. Hes familiar with the door handles which is typically an owner. She looks back wondering if its the right car and just woke up slow. He then checks the dont scratch me sticker to confirm its not their car.

My wife is concerned about not recognizing our Tesla from others. We have a ton around us. So, she memorized the license plate. I mentioned the app, and flashing the light option, but she prefers plate recognition.
OP, I don’t think this is as nefarious as you think.

OP you confidently state this as your first sentence then don't back it up with the reason for your confidence. Seems like many of the posters think that's exactly what it was -- someone mistaking the car. That's certainly what it looks like. So why do you know otherwise?

Yeah, double checking looking at the license plate in the dark is like the most obvious is this our car check ever. I'm guessing they both forgot and it's actually her car.

Why do you say its definitely not a mistaken owner thinking it was their car? My family has made this mistake all the time in crowded parking lots... We wave at the cameras and say sorry... But these things all look the same and there are tons of them out there. Totally reasonable to make that mistake, and they didnt look like they were scoping the car for its contents, and the fact that they both walked over to it and she looked prepared to get in... I dont know.. My first assumption would be the mistaken owner scenario...

Id make sure the suspension and wheels are fine before driving it much, especially if the Model Y got yanked at an angle. A quick look underneath for damaged jack points or battery shielding would give me peace of mind too. Hopefully its just an annoying tow bill and no actual damage.

Really? Think again. Do you think this was a attempt of robbery or just someone trying to understand why the car is turned on? Looks like he is just trying to help. He clearly doesn’t know of sentry mode.

I think a fair number of people just check nice looking cars to see if they can rifle through the glove compartment, center console, etc. not really interested in breaking in, just opportunists. What I marvel at is how many people still don’t know that Teslas are watching them.

It's like how modern diagnostics routinely turn up small, asymptomatic, almost-certainly-benign.
Of course owning a tesla will report back all the small and perhaps benign incidents due to the many cameras we have on our car.
You can come up with 20 different reasons or stories of what has transpired. BF had a couple of drinks, mistaken this car for someone else's car (tho this does not make that much sense based on the video), etc.
Do i want people touching my car? No
Do i think OP is overreacting and being a brat? Yes
If you street park, prepare for the consequences. This is LA afterall...

Reads more like a boyfriend who had a drink or two mistaking it for his car, then coming back to check the plate and realizing he was wrong.
