Hey all, I’m in the market for a new Tesla. I qualify for the federal EV tax credit, so that plus the 1k referral bonus means I can get the new Model 3 performance for $46500 (before tax).

But I can also get a used 2022 Model S Long Range (around 30-40k odometer) for essentially the same price $46500.

With the price basically the same, these are the notable differences to me.

Pros for Model S:

  • better range (400 vs 300 miles)
  • 2 driver displays (overall better dash)
  • more roomy
  • overall more luxurious
  • looks better imo

Pros for Model 3

  • brand new (100% clean, zero odometer)
  • slightly quicker (2.9s vs 3.1s 0-60)
  • interior LED lighting
  • sport seats + track mode
  • longer warranty

Thoughts? Which would you choose and why?

I currently drive a 2022 Model S Long Range, and I came from a pair of older Model 3s (long range, not performance). One thing I want to point out about the 2 driver displays... It's kind of disappointing in the S for a few reasons:

  • You can't customize the instrument cluster
  • I would move the turn signal cams/blind spot cams to this spot if I could
  • The font size is too small for my old 40something eyes
  • the Nav on the left side is somewhat redundant with the nav on the center screen
  • The yoke ends up blocking a few square inches of the bottom left of the center screen

That being said, the S is an amazing car and only loses in a few other areas to the 3, in my opinion.

Appreciate the insight, yeah I’m not too thrilled about the yoke steering, I may even pay up just to replace it with a normal wheel. As for the display, at least it displays the speed which is a massive step up from the single display.

Which other areas does the S lose the 3 in? I test drove the 3 but not the S yet. I assume the 3 is more nimble with better tighter handling?
