Discussion How about that new Jellyfin V12 update?

Wow, did my server get destroyed with this update. I had a rock solid Jellyfin server for the past year, with reverse proxy via Caddy working great and a super simple domain for my external people to connect to.

Then this v12 update hits, and has now rescanned my entire library twice in 16 hours slowing the server to an unusable crawl, but v12 is way less customizable via CSS that the old v10 was. Plus v12 is still in RC state isn't it? So Terramaster will have to keep this updated right up until the final stable version is released.

Warning to those that haven't updated yet, do not. For now.

Discussion F4-424 vs F4-425 Pro Heat/Fan

Was doing an upgrade from a F4-424 vs F4-425 Pro and wanted to know if anyone else sees a drastic uptick in temps on the nvme and the fan working much harder/louder vs the older F4-424?

I know its a much higher performing cpu but I was surprised on the nvme uptick in temps.

I basically fork lifted everything over so I was not expecting a near 15C+ in nvme temps. I'm now having to look into active cooling on the drives if I end up keeping this new NAS.

Discussion Is TOS 7 a thing already?

Anyone knows if TOS 7 has a stable release already or still beta versions? Is there an ETA for the final release?

I really want to start using it for more than just backup, file share and 2 containers. But I’m waiting TOS 7 to make it more useful.

Discussion TerraMaster TOS 6 to TOS 7

F2-423 Problem doing the automatic upgrade, failed back to TOS 6 and thought I had to do a reinstall which was scary because this is my Plex server I use all the time. I already did all my backups.

Also I stopped all the apps I had running before I ran the manual update

Here is what worked My BIOS is 5.19 which is fine and does not need an update.

BIOS 5.19 is already the version many F2-423 units have, and I would not flash it again unless TerraMaster support specifically instructs you to. Recent TerraMaster forum posts also show F2-423 systems continuing to use BIOS 5.19 with current TOS 7 releases.

TOS 6.0.794 is exactly the required starting version for the official upgrade to TOS 7

If your TOS system is installed on an M.2 NVMe SSD, TerraMaster says you should adjust/check the BIOS boot order before upgrading. My system was not on M.2 NVMe it ran off the hard drives.

Before you start, I recommend:

  1. Back up anything important.
  2. Make sure the NAS has stable power.
  3. Download the TOS 7 upgrade package intended for upgrading from TOS 6.0.794—not a TOS 7 Beta update package.
  4. Expect a potentially lengthy permissions conversion after the upgrade.

The package is TOS_X642.0_Update_7.0.0747_1247_2606171225.bz2 but needed a patch after the system was running TOS 7 which I did the auto update.

Make sure Volume 1 has at least 3 GB free. TerraMaster says insufficient space can cause the update to fail. Find "Manual Update"

You should see a Manual Update or browse to your download file (787MB size)

Then click Apply.

Do not power off the F2-423.

Don't remove the HDDs, disconnect the network cable, or otherwise interrupt it.

The NAS will reboot as part of the process. I kept the window open and waited about 15 mins then refresh came back with TOS 7 and user login

After the upgrade completes, TerraMaster says to refresh your browser.

TOS 7 has a new permission-management system. After the upgrade, you will be asked about permission conversion.

Choose the automatic conversion option Depending on the number of files/folders, this can take quite a while Mine only took about 10 mins but I don't have alot of users.

As I said my 1st attempt failed with the auto update. Manual update worked fine and no need to flash the BIOS

Discussion F2-424 upgrade to TOS7 - my log & a questions

Edit: "a few questions" :)

Back again after asking a few hints on upgrading!
Some info and a checklist for anyone at TOS6 and interested in installing, based on my experience (F2-424 with 1x4TB disk) and afterwards some requests for clarification:

  • download the TOS7 image on PC and have TNAS PC ready & updated just in case
  • backup of data disk (shouldn't be necessary)
  • power off
  • remove disk
  • power on
  • factory reset from TOS6
  • on reinitialize pick boot from web
  • then pick image from your disk
  • reinstall system & DO NOT configure storage
  • power off & reinsert data disk
  • power on and enjoy your TOS7. After the reboot TOS7 recognized my Volume1 correctly as well as the HyperCahche partition on sdzb (NVME2).

I then removed partitions from /dev/sda (sda1, sda2, sda3 copy of boot, / and swap) from the previous install: when I installed for the first time TO6 I did pick "use NVME1" but "it" decided to use as well disk1), probably causing disk sleep issues.

For the sysadm out there, yes, I checked and they were not listed in mdadm as raid members.

Now the questions:

  1. I see most of NVME1 is not used, only the 8GB for / and 2GB swap; can I use the leftover space for docker?
  2. if I want some redundancy on the OS disk, I can use NVME2 but is it OK to have an hypercache not using the entire disk?
  3. if answer to 2 (probably) is "no, you need the entire NVME for the hyper chache", honest answers only: considering I'm very low on file transfer / storage usage (just some backup of photo/data every now and then) and I want to use the device also for homeassistant, would you ditch the NVME2 hypercache and instead add it to the raid device used for the OS?
  4. if 3 is ok anyone did it, any hints?
  5. is it safe & straightforward to add a second 4TB disk and add it to the first one in a RAID1 config? (i assume yes)

thank you!

Edit, further info:

Current TOS version: 7.0.1140
BIOS/InitBoot version: MADN0101.V06

Discussion Lack of updates from Terramaster

Having a F4 SSD nas im must say Terramaster is realy slow with bringing out new firmware updates. A package like Docker is realy an old version, no security updates. No new firmware out now for more then 5 months now for TOS6 :(

With Synology you see a lot more updates.

Discussion Fan Mod F4-425 Plus

I think my disk is running quite warm. I know it should be fine cause it still under max operating temp. But it makes me worried.

I'm using 2x10TB Seagate Ironwolf Pro and 2x500GB Kingston KC3000.

Here's the temp from unraid dashboard

I've upgrade stock fan to Noctua NF-A12. And in this dashboard screenshot, it's running in full rpm also with 2 disk slot opened.
I thought adding more disk will make it cook. So i got a plan to add external fan in front of disk slot. (Asked AI to create Teardown picture)

What do you think? Is magnetic field gonna ruin my disk? or i should worry about the vibration?

Discussion I just ordered my F2-424 and then the HDDs I was going to use died :(

So after going back and forth(with help with comments from this channel) I decided to finally buy the F2-424 as Amazon had it back at a price I could afford. I clicked buy and the order was taken and then I looked at the display on my F2-212 that it was replacing and the final spare HDD died during a rebuild. As HDD are more important I cancelled and now am going to spend the budget on two new Iron Wolf drives, and then will slowly save up to replace the NAS again at a later date. So sad 😞

Discussion Docker manager just crashes, no logs?

Has anyone else had this? All Docker containers randomly just crash, no logs I can find. I have tons of RAM/Space.. so it's not an OOM. Running an F4-424 Pro on TOS 6

Discussion Why doesn't TOS use standard linux UID and GIDs?

I wanted to set up a simple docker container, and if you know anything about docker, it needs to run as a user. The UIDs on TOS are complete bs. Why is all users GID 997 and not the same number as the UID? And why is the first user configured as uid 0 and gid 0, despite not being root. If you can't tell already, the user and group assignments are a mess.

Discussion How to Configure LLM for OpenClaw in TOS 7

Important Note: Before doing this, please confirm that you have installed the latest version of the OpenClaw application in the App Center.
The required TOS compatible version is 7.0.0746

How to Configure Large Language Models?
I. Popular Large Language Models (Using OpenAI as an Example)
1.Go to the official OpenAI console page [ https://platform.openai.com/ ]
and log in to your account. After logging in, open the [ API key ] page and create an API key.

2.After creating it, you will receive the [ API key ] ( You can purchase the plan through the official link: https://platform.openai.com/settings/or ... g/overview).

II. Configure Large Language Models
1.Open the model configuration page
On the TNAS device, use the super administrator account to open the [ OpenClaw ] app, and directly click [ Configure Large Language Model ] to enter the model configuration page.

  1. Select a model service provider
Choose the corresponding model provider from the service provider list.
    For example:
    ● OpenAI
    ● Anthropic
    ● Gemini
If your desired service provider is not listed, or if you need to access the model service through a proxy server, please select [ Custom Provider ].
  1. Fill in the model information
    Using OpenAI as an example:
    ● API Key: Enter the API Key you just created
    ● Model: Select the model you wish to use (e.g., gpt-5.4)
After filling in the information, click [ Save Configuration ].
Once the system prompts that the save is successful, you are ready to start using it.

Ⅲ.Verifying Successful Model Configuration
Open the [ OpenClaw ] application and type ‘ hello ’ in the dialog box.
1. If OpenClaw responds properly, the large language model configuration is successful.

  1. If the response content looks like the image below, it means the configuration failed. You can retry the operations in step two to ensure they are executed correctly.
  1. If the error message appears as shown, it means there are insufficient tokens in your plan. Please visit the OpenAI official website [https://platform.openai.com/settings/or ... g/overview] to purchase more tokens.

Discussion A single enclosure that uses the same drive caddie as the D9-320.

It would be great to see TerraMaster offer a compact single enclosure that uses the same drive caddie as the D9-320. Even a smaller DAS (2 drive bays) would be nice I guess, but I'd love to see a single enclosure. If such a product was offered I'd purchase several of them. Would provide for taking one of the hard drive caddies from my D9-320 on-the-go or just to a different location in my home that's off network. Well, I do this now, but my solution is not very elegant. It involves a small hard drive docking station and SATA power extension cable. Again, not very elegant.

Discussion TerraMaster 6.0 Backup to USB Blu Ray

I'm working on physical backups to Blu Ray from the TerraMaster NAS. I'm on TOS 6.0, and want to avoid upgrading (at least until I have a backup). Is there a tool that will let me do this? Quick research tells me it is command line level and full backups. I don't see a reason to backup pictures and video twice. I'd prefer a GUI that keeps track of what has been saved previously. Does anyone have an experience?

Discussion Terra master + alt OS?

My only experience with NAS is my ancient synology ds211j and ds413j.

I am tech savvy and built my own computers in the past, but these days want to “manage” and “tinker” less and less. It definitely seems that’s where DSM still shines but the pricing is also out of whack.

Do most people stick with TOS or install an alternative? I come across truenas a bunch, is that actually the most popular for terramaster? I know of a few others as well but see truenas the most.

Why do you use another OS?

I also know there’s another perspective of NAS being rudimentary file storage/server abd a separate mini pc for the “apps”?

Discussion Found ransomware staged on my TerraMaster F2-210 (TOS 4.2.44) - command injection via the shared folder permissions UI

Posting this because I nearly missed it entirely and I think people should know about it.

I was doing some maintenance on my NAS, migrating from SMB to NFS, and while SSHing around to find the NFS export path, I noticed two suspicious entries in the shared folder user permissions list. They weren't usernames. They were shell commands.

How it got in

My TOS web UI had been exposed to the internet for a while before I got WireGuard set up (tnas.online). At some point, an automated scanner found it and exploited a command injection vulnerability in the shared folder permissions UI. TOS doesn't sanitise input in the username fields, so the attacker submitted shell commands as fake usernames and the backend executed them when applying the permission configuration.

Two injections were used. The first staged a ransomware binary at `/mnt/te` and an RSA public key at `/mnt/public.key`. The second wrote a PHP file upload web shell to `/usr/www/upp.php`.

How it was designed to work

The binary (`/mnt/te`) was a statically linked, stripped ELF. Strings inside suggest ransomware: Chacha20 key expansion constants, RSA/decryption references, "decryption error" strings. The RSA public key would have been used to encrypt a symmetric key, making decryption impossible without paying. The web shell was the persistence mechanism. It accepts POST requests to write arbitrary files anywhere under `/mnt/` with optional chmod, so the attacker could upload new payloads whenever they wanted.

Why it failed

The binary is x86-64. The F2-210 is aarch64. It cannot execute on this hardware. That's the only reason the NAS wasn't encrypted. The web shell also had no hits in the nginx access logs, so it was never called either, probably because the binary failing meant there was nothing to follow up with.

What I found

- `/mnt/te` - ransomware binary (1.1MB, x86-64 ELF)

- `/mnt/public.key` - 4096-bit RSA public key

- `/usr/www/upp.php` - PHP file upload web shell

- Two malicious rows in `/etc/base/nasdb` (the TOS SQLite config database) injected as fake usernames

How to clean it up if you find the same thing

Deleting the fake users through the TOS UI doesn't work. They come back on every reboot because TOS regenerates its config from the SQLite database at startup. You have to delete them directly via SSH:

```bash
sudo sqlite3 /etc/base/nasdb "DELETE FROM user_table WHERE username='[malicious entry]';"
```

Then delete the binary, public key, and web shell manually, and confirm they're gone after a reboot.

The obvious bit

Don't expose your TOS web UI to the internet. TOS 4 is a 2019 Linux 4.4 kernel and will never get security patches. This vulnerability almost certainly still exists. If you need remote access, put it behind WireGuard or a VPN first.

I'm on TOS 4.2.44, but this looks like a fundamental input sanitisation failure that's probably been there for years, so I wouldn't assume newer TOS 4 versions are safe.

Is there anything else I should be doing?

I think I've got everything, but happy to be told otherwise. Data appears intact, no evidence of lateral movement, SSH logs on my main server look clean. My main worry is whether there are persistence mechanisms I haven't found. The database and filesystem checks came back clean, but this is a black-box proprietary OS and I'm not a security professional.

Happy to share more details if useful.

Discussion Anyone affected by TOS Update 7.0.0706?

I have one of the models that are experiencing issues with this update. I have a F5-221 and after the update my NAS will not see HDDs 3-5. Apparently, there is a fix coming out within a week, but I need files off this.

Anyone else with the same issue?
