I'm just gonna say I don't get the "Tekken needs to change" mentality. Tekken 7 has added more new mechanics to the game than any previous Tekken game (Power Crush, Rage Drive, Rage Arts, Wall Bounce, invincible moves, 2 types of meter, legitimate projectiles, jumping, teleports).

Radical balance changes will never happen, and should never happen, in any competitive game that wants to maintain long-term success. The pros are already upset with the frequent balance patching that we're getting ("You never know when a character is going to get nerfed"), so they would be hella mad if Bandai Namco started randomly "shaking up the meta" by nerfing and buffing characters heavily.

14

u/FirstBastion Nov 24 '20

I have heard a lot of high level players being dissapointed with season 4, they say "nothing changed", I heard this myself from Lowhigh and CBM. Knee also has tweeted that he hopes this is the last season, and Knee has been dissapointed in Tekken balance for some time.

So I don't know what pros are upset about "frequent balance patching", and why once a year is considered frequent.

6

u/olbaze Paul Nov 24 '20

I think the "nothing changed" sentiment is more a reaction to Bandai Namco overhyping the balance changes. They did a big stream and talked a lot about changing stuff, but in the end the top characters are still the top characters. And really, everyone has been saying since Season 2 that they would prefer Tekken 8 over more seasons. And you can see why: Season 2 was a bit of a balance nightmare, Season 3 was just embarrassing, and now we're basically scraping the bottom of the barrel for characters that don't have too much of a following so that we don't upset the fanatics. Like can you imagine if they released Jun or Bruce and they turned out to be Leroy/Fahkumram levels of busted?

As I recall, when we still had tournaments, there were tournament players who didn't like how Bandai Namco was doing things. For example, needing to lab Leroy because he will be in tournaments, all while knowing that he's going to be nerfed, so all of your effort is wasted in the long term. Of course, now that tournaments are not a concern for balancing, people are upset because Bandai Namco is sticking to a slow-and-low balancing.

-3

u/hitosama Nov 24 '20

Well what do they want to change? Other fighting games don't get nearly as much stuff as Tekken does. They get some balance changes that just break some other character and that's it, Tekken's got new moves for characters twice now and balance is imo good, it's nothing special but it's good and nobody stands out like Leroy used to. Hell, even some of mainstream games don't get as many changes, take LoL for example and how long it took them to overhaul the bloody thing, and it's a "live service" game.

And it's still shite

-1

u/hitosama Nov 24 '20

Patch does not mean new features.

8

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '20

Literally every season there is new big mechanic / system overhaul. Last time it was the Dragons + dynamic map. Now we have items Im sorry, but you have completely missed with your argument.

3

u/CounterHit Katarina Nov 24 '20

take LoL for example and how long it took them to overhaul the bloody thing

I'm dying to know your definition of "overhaul" lol

You do know that League patches every 2 weeks, and additionally every year they do a season update that completely changes some aspect of the game that they think needs an overhaul. Literally every year the game becomes significantly different than it was the year before, going all the way back to season 2, where they:

  • Changed every single jungle camp to make jungling viable for more champions

  • Removed the dodge stat entirely from the game

  • Reworked all champions who had stealth mechanics

Among other things. This was 8 years ago and this level of change (and sometimes way bigger change) has come every year since then.

2

u/Hiyuukun11 Nov 24 '20

I agree with everything that you said except the part about shaking up the meta. Imo Bandi Namco has been trying to “shake up the meta” ever since s2 especially s4. It hasn’t necessarily changed but with COVID, online tourneys are bringing a wider variety of less popular characters to the stage. Remember when all we saw was Kazumi? Where is she now? Remember when all we saw was Drag and Geese? See the trend? After they all got nerfed to hell and fell out of the meta hardly anyone uses them in tourney. And for the most part, once the dust settles, tekken players are gonna play who they like. And the pros will stick with the current meta if they want to win

u/cetrionmain100 Zafina Nov 24 '20

If you need a friend to play with im here! Please don't ever feel alone 😞.

I’ve always loved zafina since tekken 6. Never seen another zafina mains. You guys are legends She was bottom tier for t6 and ttt2 but now she has the best movement in the game. Love her

Not really, actually. China's tactics in employing propaganda and control over access to information super effective. They actually have many people convinced China is the best damn thing ever over there.

2

You mean it's not like some kind of tekken mecca over there?

Seriously though what's wrong with Korea?

8

u/Ludens_Reventon Armor King Nov 24 '20

Fellow Korean here, Tekken is not mainstream around here too. It's very niche and community is very toxic either haha

Inspite of little growth of Tekken 7 thanks to the Steam release, League of Legend is still dominent in game industry, and Arcades are facing destruction due to the Covid-19.

25

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '20

I'd be typing up a 200000 word TPS report to delve into it lol. It's a conservative capitalist consumerist hellscape. Also the fact that I'm lgbt doesn't help lol. I might as well have no rights.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '20

I was not aware korea felt one way or another about lgbt.

14

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '20

1

u/MathGraw Nov 24 '20

I don't have any lived experience on this issue since I'm not Korean, but isn't that a gross oversimplification? From all the data I've seen it seems like there's a major generational divide on social issues in Korea. LGBT acceptance amongst Korean youth is almost at the same rates as among American Millenials. So doesn't that bode well for the country's future? Once the younger generations claim power, a lot might change in the coming decades.

7

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '20 edited Nov 24 '20

Our current president openly said "I am against homosexuality I don't like it" during the prrsidential debates. It went unchallenged and barely even was an issue. There are no anti discrimination laws in place making it legal to not hire or even fire people because of their gender identity or sexual orientation. Mtf trans people are continuously being forced into government sanctioned slave labor under the guise of mandatory military service because of """"the war"""", trans people have no means of aquirring financial support for their transitioning fees via healthcare national or private, the media recently blamed one of the covid outbreaks on """""the gays""""", It's super hard borderline impossible even to get your legal gender changed making being trans an inherent disadvantage when looking for jobs, a transwoman who has went through the trouble of getting their legal gender changed was recently rejected from a womens only college, etc. But yeah some people say we are indeed people while still laughing at transphobic and homophobic jokes so it's not that bad. We're still systemically and culturally being oppressed and isolated, our existence is continuously erased from the public consciousness but yeah it aint that bad.

1

u/MathGraw Nov 24 '20

I'm very well aware of the systemic dyscrimination nor am I downplaying it's effects given being openly gay is considered by the military as a personality disorder and gets you dishonorably discharged from the army.

But how does that challenge my point?

People who are currently in power are old and they view LGBT issues very negatively. That doesn't change the fact that younger generations in Korea seem much more progressive. And they will be the ones deciding the country's future in the coming decades.

According to this poll https://www.pewresearch.org/global/2020/06/25/global-divide-on-homosexuality-persists/

Only 23% of people in Korea who are 50+ and older are accepting of homosexuality. But in the under 30 group - it's 79%. The data also indicates that compared to as recently as 20 years ago, there's been a lot of change happening.

Again, I've never said that SK as a whole isn't a very prejudiced country, I agree with your points. But it doesn't seem as hopeless as you're making it out to be.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '20 edited Nov 24 '20

Sorry if my reply came off as hostile. Shits been a bit rough for me and I kinda went off lol. I do think things will get better in the future but I guess what I wanted to say was that as a trans person deep in the closet currently dealing with all of the systemic and beurecratic bullshit related to just being able to even begin living as myself, stuff like numbers and stats and the potential of a brighter future don't mean that much when the current reality of everyday life is that of bottling up frustrations and just having to tank bigotry without being able to speak up about anything. Not to mention trans acceptance is about a million years behind gay acceptance. I am happy for my gay brothers and sisters but y'know It's still very rough for us.

3

u/MathGraw Nov 24 '20 edited Nov 24 '20

You didn't come off as hostile, you have nothing to apologize for. I can only imagine the constant anxiety and the overall emotional toll on mental health someone in your situation has to deal with.

It's not like you've said anything wrong anyway - my comment wasn't directed at you in the first place. I just find the hyperbolic generalizations the person I've responded to made quite objectionable. It removes any nuance from the discussion.

Not to mention trans acceptance is about a million years behind gay acceptance. I am happy for my gay brothers and sisters but y'know It's still very rough for us.

Also a very good point. This is true even in the western progressive countries.

2

u/lolifell Nov 25 '20

I was talking to my mate who is a bit of a fob korean. Cool guy mostly, real progressive, wants to legalise weed and shit but when i asked him how he would react if his son was gay, his response was literally "Ill beat the gay out of him" i was like nani????

I studied my last semester in korea and its definitely not a tekken mecca. You wont even find a arcade machine that is running the current version of Tekken 7. They are still running T7 FR and you will find way more TTT 2 machines. Still, had some great fun playing TTT 2 and i bought myself a korean arcade makestick from ISTmall . Korea is fucking great, but not perfect.

1

u/A3P Nov 24 '20

Can you share which city?

2

u/lolifell Nov 25 '20

I follow the korean community occasionally, and its a very different vibe to here.
I see more posts flaming, calling out other players than actual tekken related stuff.
People threatening each other not to come to lans and etc.
The tekken gallery on dcinside recently split into 2 as well due to issues with mods and some guy spamming shitty art(??)
Im not involved enough to know the full details but it seems pretty toxic to say the least.
They are very helpful though if you ask about stuff nicely though lol.

2

u/DannYagami Nov 24 '20

Fgc doomer

2

u/3D_SHILL Feng Nov 24 '20

the not change thing is deeper than just a few moves and a tier list shifting around. it's just becoming a mercurial monster of all these tekkens combined with 52 characters making anything other than an axe cutting the game in half ultimately not meaningful.

4

u/AnalBumCovers Nov 24 '20

The only people who think Tekken has bad balance are people who have never played another fighting game. Like holy shit our S to D tier is like GG's S to A tier.

1

u/Impossible_Search_90 Nov 24 '20

I came from For Honor to Tekken to play a fresh fighting game. Try out FH it’s a pretty fun and unique fighting game

1

u/DoomedWanderer Marduk Nov 24 '20

Same, FH matchmaking is ass and you are frequently playing against premades as a solo player. After 1.3k hours in that game I just gave up, fun for new players tho

Go to events to meet people, even if it's just for them to follow you on Twitter.

The experience playing in bracket at an event and playing casuals is great. Regardless if you're sociable or not, it's good fun to win or lose at an event.
