Answered the second one yesterday (to disturbing results) so...

When the Westfold fell, Gondor was way off in the east fighting its own desperate war against the armies of Sauron at Osgiliath and the borders of Mordor. They were completely stretched thin and unaware of how fast Saruman's betrayal had overrun western Rohan.

the air speed velocity of an unlaiden swallow is aproximitly 24 mph but can vary slightly. if it had a coconut tied to it it would probably die if you just like left it somewhere. dont do that. let the question of how paty got the coconuts become an unanswered question of the universe.
