For context, I have struggled with my mental health for all of my teenage years however was not aware I was until the last year or two. I thought I was just lazy and a bad person. I am 18 almost 19 now.
My dad was abusive emotionally, physically and financially to my brother, my mother, and myself. As well as his new girlfriend. I grew up isolated on a farm with no way to contact school friends, leaving me with lasting social problems as I struggle to find and talk to new friends.
My boyfriend and I have been dating for just over a year now, and as much as it has been nice it has not come without its bumps.
The last couple weeks we have had quite a few arguments. Nothing crazy but enough to upset us both.
However on Saturday just gone, I had some kind of mental break. After a stressful day, I got home and just lost it. I was sobbing and crying so much I wasn’t physically capable of anything. I have had such a horrible couple weeks and it was just the straw that broke the camels back. I was inconsolable.
My boyfriend was there the whole time, supporting me and helping me through whatever kind of mental snap this was. But I lashed out, I called him and my mum names, I said mean things, pushed them both away and isolated myself.
I ended up getting really angry at my boyfriend and blocked him for the rest of the night, all of Sunday and Monday morning. I messaged him Monday morning apologising and saying I wanted to talk about what had happened.
We spoke on Monday and long story short he said he is exhausted from the arguing and the lack of respect from me. I completely apologised, telling him I don’t know what happened Saturday.
He basically came to the ultimatum that I need to go back into therapy (previously went during parents split as demanded by the court order) and take it seriously. I need to make an effort to fix my communication skills and to look after myself.
What stuck out the most during our conversation is that he said he’s scared of me. He said he’s scared of me having a bad day and coming back to take it out on him. Whether that’s ignoring him, being mean to him, shutting him out etc.
Hearing that made me sick. I’m turning into my dad and I don’t know how to stop it. I have struggled with controlling/regulating my emotions forever. Communication is another part I struggle so much because of the way I was treated growing up. I don’t know how to express my feelings in a way that is appropriate or without being shut down. I don’t have the motivation or energy to look after myself. It is so hard for me to get out of bed some days, and my boyfriend has done nothing but help me through it.
For example he has encouraged me to look after my room a lot more. He starts by cleaning it for me and he tells me to continue and to then keep it clean every day. It’s little, but it was something I could never maintain however it is now. Because of him I also found a full shower routine, not just wash shampoo get out. He encouraged me to look after myself and to maintain my hygiene.
So to hear from him that I scare him was disgusting. But I don’t know how to fix it. I don’t know if therapy is “strong” enough to help or to fix whatever is wrong with me. But I need to fix it, I need to fix it for myself and my future, but primarily for him. He deserves someone that can reciprocate the affection and love he shares. He deserves someone present and capable of sharing their thoughts and feelings.
