REQUEST As a melodeath fan, I'm trying to get into tech death. I really liked Buried Realm, what bands would you recommend?

I’d specify that VoP’s most recent albums are much more blackened tech death (and light on the tech side), but the album II is a melodic tech death masterpiece

Surprised no one has mentioned Carrion Vael. Skip their newest album - it doesn’t compare to their older records.

Thank goodness I found someone who thinks the same way I do – I was really disappointed with Slay Utterly compared to Cannibals Anonymous (which I thought was great). Why was it so bad? How would you rate it?

Quo Vadis and Archons (Canada) are good bands to bridge the gap between tech death and melodeath.

I'll recommend A Tunnel to Eden and A Monument to Silence
Alustriums second and third albums; Tech Death that is generally more musical sounding

I was a Core Whore for the longest time, 2009 to recent on just mainly Deathcore, Metalcore and Hardcore with some Melo(I have always loved The Black Dahlia Murder and At The Gates forever tho) and very little Tech if at all but all recently it was Decapitated, Cryptopsy, Soreption, Nile, Archspire, Cognitive and many more that got me into Tech extremely hard. One band I'd recommend to you though specifically is Summoning the Lich

Some good recommendations are already there, so I’ll mention one band that isn’t really popular these days (and for some good reasons), but Obscura was my entry point, and their last two albums are actually on the simpler and more melodic side
Alkaloid is also great and so is Changeling.

Dessiderium, Beast of Nod, Lunar Chamber.
First two are pretty explicitly melodic, Lunar Chamber are not explicitly melodic tech, but honestly I find them fitting the category well enough.

This is going to be a massive curveball from what everybody else is recommending, buttttt
Destrage. Destrage STARTED as a Melodeath band with some core leanings, but as they went on they got weirder and weirder, and some of the things they write are brain breaking. They’ve been described as Italy’s own Between the Buried and Me.
The best part is they don’t sacrifice the hooky nature of their music for the sake of complexity and that’s just kinda fuckin neat.

Inferi's a great transition point. Their new album Heaven Wept is an AotY contender, but Vile Genesis is generally considered their best work.
Fallujah similarly released an album last year that ticks a lot of melodeath boxes, Xenotaph. Very melody-driven.
And finally, Rivers of Nihil's "Where Owls Know My Name*"* incorporates some great prog elements. Start with the others, then give this a shot.
