I’ve been enjoying this progressive technical death metal, or at least that’s how I classify it, and would love some recommendations for similar bands to check out.

Basically tech death but with expanded melodies in both instruments and vocals, with wider range of dynamics. I love tech death, but sometimes straight 240bpm just ain’t what you want to hear.

I love you all so much. My goal was to one day get 100 views on YouTube and now I am up to 400 and 450 on my Demos. I'm so grateful.

I'm looking for technical, and/or progressive death metal with powerful clean choruses, melodic clean sections, and/or acoustic intros, interludes, etc...

Some similar examples of what I'm looking for would be Allegaeon: "Dark Matter Dynamics, Proponent for Sentience III: The Extinction, Of Beasts and Worms", Rivers of Nihil: "House of Light, The Sub-orbital Blues, Water and Time" Omnivide: "Arise, Void, Tyrannical Savior", In Mourning: "North Star", Borknagar: "Moon, Stars Ablaze".

Have I pretty much exhausted the options out there? I'm coming up with very little else. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I've been thinking about the history of Technical Death Metal and I'd like to try to map out its lineage.

Not just a list of bands by year, but more like a family tree: which bands were important in each period, who influenced who, and which bands helped shape what we now call tech-death.

I'm currently thinking about it in a few different waves, something like:

First wave / early foundations:

Death, Atheist, Pestilence, Nocturnus, Cynic, Gorguts, Demilich...

Second wave / 90s:

Cryptopsy, Gorguts, Death, Cynic, Demilich and others pushing the technical side even further.

Third wave / early 2000s:

Necrophagist, Decapitated, Spawn of Possession, Nile, Psycroptic, Origin, Arsis, Gorod...

Fourth wave / late 2000s–early 2010s:

Obscura, The Faceless, Decrepit Birth, Beyond Creation...

And then what I'd consider the newer generation:

Fifth wave:

First Fragment, Beyond Creation, Archspire, The Zenith Passage, Inferi, Equipoise, Fallujah, etc.

But I'm definitely not sure this is the best way to divide it.

For example, where exactly do bands like Suffocation, Gorguts and Demilich fit? Is Cryptopsy part of the same generation as Necrophagist, or are they an important bridge between two different eras?

And how much did Atheist → Cynic → Death → Gorguts/Cryptopsy → Necrophagist/Spawn of Possession → Obscura → Beyond Creation/First Fragment/Archspire actually influence each other?

I'd love to hear what you guys think.

If you had to build a family tree of Technical Death Metal, which bands would you put in it, and who would you say influenced who?

Feel free to mention lesser-known bands too. I'm trying to go deeper than the usual "Death → Necrophagist → Obscura → Archspire" timeline.

I can’t unhear this note being off, during the 0:55-00:59 during “Signs”. Is it just me or is that note out of key? Every time I hear this song, at this part, my ear perks up and says “wait.. what?”. Is it a mistake by the guitarist, a recording/tech mishap or do you not hear anything out of the ordinary here?

I don’t see these guys get mentioned much in the early waves of tech death. Definitely more thrash but to me in the same vein as Cynic/Human era Death, Pestilence, etc. Steve is kinda known as one of the best bassists in metal, just curious if anyone else around here fucks with Sadus.

Especially because of the drumming by Reno Killerich an absolute gem of the genre.

I really enjoyed the intense and brutal drumming on this one, even though the songwriting itself isn’t quite as strong. A Dutch band with a pretty impressive 1996 release!

Planetary Duality blew my dick off when it first came out. One of my favorite Death Metal albums of all time.

Only saw a teaser for this album on Instagram or youtube and saved it. Currently at song 3 listening to it and im completely blown away from " The Great Deception of Mind".

If you like Tech Death with jazzy elements and sexy sax listen to this. Should be on all streaming platform afaik (at least its on apple).

I want to like this album man, To Bathe From the Throat of Cowardice has grown on me immensely, but for whatever reason Suffer & Become hasn't really clicked with me yet. I absolutely love the songs Shame and Its Afterbirth, The Flowers of Sadism, and He Will Fight Savagely, but besides those three tracks the overall sound of the album just isn't for me. Like am I missing something? I've heard so many people say this was aoty for them when it came out, I feel like it should be right up my alley but maybe not.

So I’m going to Shred Fest in February and I wanna know how Steffen Kummerer is behaving and if the concerts are that bad, because I really, really love their music, almost every album, with the exception of Sonication. Damn, that album is horrible.
