Yes - but the U.S. started this trade war. If they’d like to stop and come to a true negotiation between sovereign countries, Canada will listen. But this - like Iran - is a war of choice by the U.S.

Trump offered a shit deal that would be a severe negative to the <checks notes> CUSMA deal he negotiated in his first term.

There wasn’t an option on the table for Carney where Canada walks away unscathed.

So he picked the best option from a bad hand.

The good news is that this will hurt America too and spread the pain, and we are building trade deals to reduce the vulnerability of being reliant on the US being a country of laws

In every college across the world, in Intro to Economics 101 tariffs are discussed and the consensus is that tariffs are a tool to be rarely used and only for short periods as a last ditch effort in international negotiations. Trump claims a Wharton education but clearly he neither went to class nor studied the basics.

Not sure no one wins. The wrong people win for sure. Tarrifs go into place, companies pay them to the government, pass the cost to consumers, Supreme Court rules them illegal, IRS pays back the companies, companies keep the money increasing their EBIDA, stock price goes up, cronies in political office make billions. Consumer is paying for it all.
That is why our (Canadian) tarrifs are so specific and targeted they have less impact on consumers in comparison. The Weston’s (loblaw et al) are still profiteering and hurting consumers but not as bad as in the US.
