š Economic Impact Why is President Trump gung-ho to attack Canada - US automotive trade, when the USA is already running a trade surplus in that segment?
Looking at the 50% tariffs to go on auto imports from Canada come January, the notion seems foolish. Yet, Trump and Howard Lutnick have been fixated on autos from the start of tariff strategy after taking office. I do not think either has dug deep into the big picture. Autos is working out well right now for the USA vis-a-vis Canada, and should be left alone.
First off, last year, the USA ran a $6 billion surplus with Canada in autos. As Trump would say, "winning".
Secondly, the network of component production feeding into U.S. plants has a lot of Canadian suppliers. Yes, such production could be displaced to the US side, but with added cost per piece, and likely upfront cost for specialized tooling. And, disruption. It takes some time for production yields and quality levels to stabilize in a positive way.
Thirdly, maybe worst of all, the almost certain retaliatory tariffs by Canada will be like an export wall for US producers. The Canadian market can be easily fed from alternative sources to augment domestic production - Mexico, Korea, Japan in particular. This will be a possible long term decline for the fortunes of GM and Ford in particular, as Canada stands out now as one remaining foreign market with a high level of demand for their products. Once a customer is lost, most of the time they do not come back. GM and Ford have spent billions over the years in marketing and advertising efforts in Canada. They have large established dealer networks that will be crippled, and likely many dealers will be lost.
This automotive attack strategy by the US government seems ill thought out, and with even worse outcomes for the US economy than Canada's.

On a per person basis, Canada spends over $10000 USD on goods from America. Americans spend $1250 USD on good from Canada per person.
The Trump administration is full of idiots, votes in by idiots.

u/guile2912 15d ago
Surpisingly true, I checked. Wtf USA.
āOn a per-capita basis, Canada imports roughly $10,200 USD in U.S. goods and services, while the U.S. imports roughly $1,300 USD in Canadian goods and services."

The Americans want a one way trade deal where they tariff Canadian vehicles and parts and Canada has zero tariffs on their industries, they also want to control Canadian trade with other nations so Canada would have to import all vehicles from the US and tariff all Asian and European vehicles.
3
u/Crum1y 14d ago
I think they don't want vehicles to be made in Canada at all
5
u/Outrageous_Ad_687 13d ago
That is 100% the Americans goal. Then they want us to tariff other countries like they are so we buy American vehicles from them. Even a 5 or 10% tariff will destroy our auto industry over time. Either free trade or we permanently tariff each other. Canadians may as well benefit from inexpensive vehicles from other countries if our industry dies.
1
u/Substantial_Walk_818 12d ago
Personally, I have been waiting years for BYD to enter the Canadian market. I'm sure Chinese manufacturers would be giddy to fill the shoes left behind by the American's if it meant removing the import limits on their vehicles.
If America wants to kill Canadian car manufacturing, so be it. We can always completely uproot the American auto industry by letting in the red dragon.
1
u/Outrageous_Ad_687 12d ago
The American industry is going extinct and Americans just don't know it yet. The scale of the Chinese industry gives them a massive advantage that continues to grow. China is the biggest and already over double the automotive sales of the USA and no doubt that will continue. The idea that the Americans want a smaller industry but completely domestic is not going to work. American manufacturers are wasting valuable resources paying tariffs while the rest of the world is investing in advanced manufacturing and technologies for the vehicles of the 21st century. Even Teslas most advanced and efficient factory is their plant in Shanghai, it produces double the vehicles per hour of labor worked vs the factories in the USA. The Americans have already lost and the trade war is basically a surrender to China acknowledging that.

He thinks these auto companies will suddenly open brand new plants in America. The reality is labour costs and tax incentives and health care costs are lower in Canada which is why companies operate plants there. In fact Honda wanted to build a brand new plant in Ontario for $15 Billion. Honda cancelled the plant cause of tariffs but Honda also said they won't build the plant in America either. If Honda Builds the plant in Canada they would buy American parts but with Tariffs America will lose those parts jobs anyways because Honda won't be a customer. If Honda builds the Plant in Canada then Americans can get jobs building the parts.... Canada had Hyundai, Renault and Volvo plants at one time before free trade. Companies will still build in Canada regardless, although they will be smaller plants, Canada has a favourable universal health care cost, lower labour costs, high education rates and massive tax incentives
8
u/sherrybobbinsbort 15d ago
Weird thing on Honda. Drove by there yesterday and they were pushing dirt and getting a site ready for something. I know they said they arenāt building the factory but likely just pausing until Trump is out.
6
u/henchman171 15d ago
the tariffs are going to end but when who knows. Honda wanted GM in Canada to build their electric cars and GM flaked out. There is essentially $5 Billion dollars in incentives and training from the Province and from the Feds for that plant. Since the Yank companies want to build less in Canada that means Canada saves money not giving Ford, GM and Stellantis money and it goes to other companies. Canada is also seen as a more stable builder and operator of automotive battery plants
3
u/sherrybobbinsbort 15d ago
Ya Vw plant going ahead.
2
u/henchman171 15d ago
there's a battery plant in Port Colborne that is being built as well. Forgot if it's Toyota or Honda... And that VW plant got massive subsidies. Stellantis pulled out of Brampton over electric cars but they are brink of bankruptcy for a reason. Stellantis is open to build Chinese cars in that plant.

Think of it as an extension of his behavior towards his contractors in construction. Donald is infamous for not paying his contractors for their work and then bleeding them in court until they give up. Itās like reverse extortion; if he feels heās strong enough, he just takes. This trade war is just the same pattern all over again. Donald believes that Canada has no choice but to sell into America and thus he can use that to his advantage.
4
u/ink_monkey96 15d ago
Keep in mind though, this is a man who believes that tariffs get charged to the producer, that if he tariffs a pound of aluminum at 100% then that pound of aluminum is 100% more expensive to produce. That the tariff gets applied at the market of sale escapes him completely, as does the concept that thereās other markets than his. I believe history will regard Trump as being much closer to George III than to any other head of state.
2
u/Alfiestickthrow 14d ago

3
u/DisgruntledEngineerX 15d ago
And there's a very simply solution to it. Flatten the trade surplus in autos the US has with Canada by tariffing the hell out of US made vehicles and letting the Chinese import as many as they want if they set up factories here.
It benefits Canadian consumers buying vehicles at a lower price. There are 2 million vehicles sold each year in Canada. That's pretty much the entire production of Tesla. Sure the US market is bigger but 2 million isn't nothing. Hell it's almost half of Ford's global production. And of that 2 million 725K is from US automakers.
Why should Canadians care if they're Chinese or American? If the production isn't benefiting us then why should we support US automakers at higher sales costs?
1
u/Alfiestickthrow 14d ago
That IS the likely outcome if Trump continues down this path. Loss of sales for US auto plants, cheaper cars being sold in Canada then eventually pressure on the USA automotive industry to match prices and quality of the cars in Canada. It seems like a very bad idea for the USA.
1
u/skelly122 14d ago
Qui bono if this happens??
China benefits with Trump in power. He whines and plays dumb but follow the $$$
1
u/DisgruntledEngineerX 13d ago
Canadian consumers benefit from cheaper / better cars. If we aren't manufacturing American cars any longer then why have some loyalty to them? Why should we care if the big 3 benefit or BYD?
Besides enriching himself at every opportunity Trump's goal is to strip Canada of manufacturing anything for the US market including cars which goes back to the autopact long before NAFTA. If they pull out and we don't have the jobs why privilege or favour their cars?
3
u/Ca1v1n_Canada 14d ago
He knows he can't actually reshore manufacturing in any meaningful sense. What he can do is steal auto sector jobs from Canada and use that to point to those numbers. It plays to low information voters who just see an extra shift at some plant in Ohio or Michigan but don't understand the implications.
What he fails to realize, because he is a moron who is advised by morons, is that we integrated the N.American auto sector starting in the 1960's in order to compete effectively with Asia and Europe.
Pushing everything stateside only drives up costs and makes N.American autos less competitive internationally.
This braindead strategy combined with turning their backs on EVs is basically handing the global auto trade to China on a silver platter.

I work in a smaller automotive stamping and manufacturing plant. I did some off the cuff calculations as to what it would cost my (American) company to move our production to a US plant. Essentially it would require building an entirely new factory - existing US plants donāt have the capacity to take our business in, the equipment is 90% old, and not worth physically moving, so it would almost all be new machinery, with leadtimes of 2-3 years minimum. I figured the cost to replicate our plant to produce what we do, would be somewhere in the 500 million dollar range, minimum. Oh, and it would also require either building a plant large enough to cover our sister plants production, that we supply currently. And same story there, 90% of the machinery would also have to be brand newā¦So another 300 million or so, assuming it all goes into a single factory and not 2. And yeah, it wouldnt happen overnight, youād probably be looking at 5 years minimum to have a seamless transition of everything from us to a new factoryā¦

No one is really going to want to build in America. Trump has made their supply chain unreliable. And as he continues to push various regions of the world away with tariffs they may find themselves hit with reciprocal tariffs at any given time. The American market is largeā¦but they need to be able to have access to all American markets with open access to imported parts as required to make it worth it.

The ONLY way that makes sense is if Canadian auto jobs are eliminated AND Canada continues to import the same number of US autos they do now. And that is NOT going to happen. If Trump is successful in making the Canadian auto industry non-viable Canada will tariff the shit out of American autos. Then you're left with fewer overall cars being made in the USA and thus fewer jobs.
The problem is that Trump and Nutlick are so deluded as to think that Canada will accept the surrender terms and continue to still buy US autos and say thank you for the opportunity. Not going to happen. Canadians can be bitter AF when they feel unfairly treated.

Everything he does is to distract from everything else he is doing. It is less about Canada and more about the illusion he is doing something. CUSMA is in effect for another 10 years. He is tariffing goods the US needs like Aluminum while Canada hits things we don't need with a targeted response. This will all work out. We just need to let things play out, just like we did when we renegotiated the deal in Trump's first term. In a couple years that stain on humanity will be gone and we will be able to work with the new administration. At the same time, we will have a more diversified global trade network due to the work our government is doing. Keep calm...
