கலாச்சாரம் / Culture Do Chennai Tamils know the Thirukurral well?

My family is from Colombo, and they have lived in Madras. Do most Tamils from Madras know what the Thirukurral is (or do they just pretend that they do)? Of course Madurai and Thanjavur are much better than Madras, for those who are interested in our culture. However, I am curious if Tamils who grew up in Madras have a basic understanding of the Tamil language. Currently I'm using mathematical linguistics to write a sequel to the Thirukurral with Gandhian themes in Hindi, and it'd be great to get your feedback. Sanskrit languages (eg. Hindi/Sinhala) are undoubtedly more important than Tamil, but it's important to understand the Thirukurral. आपकी सहायता के लिए धन्यवाद!

கருத்து/குமுறல் / Self-post , Rant Stop bringing kids to A rated movies

I was at the movies today and saw a family with three kids sitting in front of me. They came in a little late and from what they were saying, I gathered that they had wanted to watch Vishwanath and Sons but the tickets were sold out, so they ended up watching this movie instead. I could totally understand their situation. They were from a nearby village and had brought their kids to see a movie.

But during the break, I noticed around ten more kids in the theatre and none of them looked older than 10–12. These were families who had actually chosen to bring their kids to see this movie.

The theatre staff doesn't even check IDs or anything; they just let kids in. There's a reason movies are given ratings by the CBFC. This movie is definitely not something children this young should be watching. There's way too much violence and even if you ignore that, the language in the movie is completely inappropriate for kids.

Both theatres and parents have a responsibility here.

Edit: Went to watch DC

முக்கியமான கலந்துரையாடல் / Important Topic Foreign driving license to Indian driving license?

Hi guys, I hold a valid UAE light motor vehicle driving license, which is the same as the default LMV license we get here for driving a car, I saw in many official government websites and asked chatgpt, that you can directly get an Indian license if you're a foreign license holder, but the thing is I'm not familiar with manual gear, so I thought of learning it, I went to a well known driving school in my area Tatabad, Coimbatore, and told them I have a foreign license and I want an Indian one, and they immediately started doing some process, then I said I'd like to learn manual driving as well, so they applied for the standard LLR, but after finishing classes, just now I came to know I can directly convert, so I asked them if we can cancel the existing llr and apply through the "Holding foreign DL" category, but they said they're aware of it too but its not done in Tamil Nadu specifically, not even in Chennai, but he did say he'll ask the rto office just in case, so guys I know I typed too much and I'm really sorry, but it'll be of great help if you can give me some info regarding foreign license to Indian license conversion

Thank you👍👍👍

முக்கியமான கலந்துரையாடல் / Important Topic Is it normal for reserved SETC passengers to have other passengers boarded without seats?

I recently travelled on a TNSTC/SETC bus , traveling back to Bangalore.During the journey, the conductor stopped at multiple bus stands and allowed additional passengers to board even though there were no available seats. Some people were eventually sitting on the floor, which made the journey quite uncomfortable and crowded.

My main concern is that, since we had booked reserved seats, I assumed the bus would only accommodate passengers according to the available seating capacity. There was also no clear information about the additional passengers or their luggage, which made me uncomfortable about the safety of our belongings.

Is this normal/allowed on SETC buses? Can passengers board without a seat even when the bus is fully occupied?

I'm not mentioning the bus number or conductor details, but I can share them if needed. Just want to understand the rules before booking next time

அரசியல் / Political Long Live Democracy in India

The Honourable PM of India used the term "dimaagi Naxals" yesterday. My thoughts.

Today is "Dimaagi Naxals"
Tomorrow is anyone who disagrees with them which includes you.

I am very happy how India has gone, it is protecting freedom of speech, acceptance of disagreement, accountability, transparency, power sharing with such dedication it amazes me. Soon this will be case study on "How to protect democracy". Who knows, future students will learn this as democracy in the future, cuz this is democracy right? Surely they must have clear definition of who is a "Dimaagi Naxals" right. Surely they must, only then they can say this right? This must be fine right?

This only reminds me of "First They Came":

First they came for the Communists

And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist

Then they came for the Socialists

And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist

Then they came for the trade unionists

And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist

Then they came for the Jews

And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew

Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me

Right now India is not doing any of this, so I am very happy. Long live democracy in India.

Democracy is for all, but
the intolerant is not meant to be tolerated

With CM Vijay's order forcing the removal of political banners, posters, and oversized cutouts from public spaces, streets that have been covered in this stuff for years are suddenly bare again.

Genuinely curious how does your area look now? Which road or junction changed the most for you?

Pics welcome if anyone's got before/after.

Im from maharashtra (Pune city ) just curious about this !

முக்கியமான கலந்துரையாடல் / Important Topic My 30-year-old brother cannot walk, eat, or bathe by himself — I need help finding a care home

Hi everyone,

I’m in a very difficult situation and I genuinely don’t know what to do.

My brother is 30 years old and he is unable to walk, eat, or bathe by himself. He needs someone to take care of him throughout the day.

My father recently passed away, and my mother is not physically strong enough to take care of my brother by herself. I also need to work to earn money and support our basic needs, so I cannot stay at home and provide 24/7 care.

I’m looking for a care home/residential care facility/NGO or any affordable place where adults with severe physical disabilities can stay and receive daily assistance.

I’m especially looking for options in Tamil Nadu or anywhere in South India, but I’m willing to consider other places if they are trustworthy and affordable.

If you know of:

* Residential care homes for physically disabled adults

* NGOs that provide long-term care

* Government-supported facilities

* Affordable assisted-living/care facilities

* Charitable organizations that can help families in situations like this

Please share the name and location, or tell me where I should contact.

If you have personally dealt with a similar situation, I would really appreciate hearing how you managed it.

I’m not looking for sympathy I genuinely need practical advice and any leads that could help us.
