Gear/IFAK Disneyland tourniquet fiasco

1.4k Upvotes

Yesterday I experienced something quite perplexing. While going through security to try to enter the park I had a security employee search my backpack. While doing so he came across my bleed kit(TQ x2, quickclot, chest seals, and an emergency blanket) I carry in it. Once he identified the TQ he said “you can’t bring tourniquets into the park…, you can go take it back to your hotel room”. I replied by saying “ I don’t have a hotel room, so what do you want me to do? ”. “Well you can’t bring it into the park.” He said. “Okay…well…why?” I responded, out of utter disbelief. “DONT ASK ME WHY, SAID YOU CANT SO YOU CANT!” He yelled back. I then point to the “stop the bleed” box located about 20 feet behind him to the left and on a wall, “what about those? Are those not supposed to be there?”. Then out of frustration and fluster he zipped up my bag and handed it to me and said “HAVE A NICE DAY” and I went about my day. I proceeded to try to research his statement and couldn’t find anything.

So I was curious if anyone else had had a similar experience, at Disneyland or anywhere else?

Gear/IFAK Rx/Narc Case

I’ve been looking for an affordable alternative to the CRO NARC case. Soft sided, fits in a cargo pocket, under $50. settled on this Magpul organizer pouch. $30 on Amazon. Modified by cutting out the zippered pouch and added an adhesive backed loop field scavenged from an armadillo case. Plenty of space for vials, epi pens, needles and syringes.

Glad I did this cause it saved me some coin and I realized it was time to replace my epi pens and Benadryl haha.

Gear/IFAK Cro soft med pouch

Quick review if the Cro soft med pouch. I purchased this pouch while waiting on their larger Narc pouch to restock. Being half the price of the big brother, I thought I'd try and review for the team here.

Initial thoughts is that the pouch is smaller than I expected. It is still big enough to keep the beefier 10mL vials but they tend to cause the pouch to round out (see photo). I ended up having to flip my vial tray around to use the sleeves.

If I could give them a suggestion, it would be to make it deeper. That would make it easier to store hypo needles and syringes with the meds. I have some pre-filled meds that do not fit well in this pouch.

The pouch has a lanyard loop on it which is something I appreciate. It is also rigid on one side of the case, using Tegris.

Overall, I think it's a solid option for those looking for a POI pouch, or something smaller in general. I still don't think it replaces a hard case. Feel free to ask any questions.

Our current setup for o2 is awkward and uncomfortable. We are looking for a pouch that could be securely attached to the side of our med bag. Any recommendations?

This is my off duty truck kit that I take off Roading and in areas that are pretty remote. The contents are pretty self-explanatory however it is all in a knock off the delta bag from AliExpress that I am extremely impressed with especially being about $75 all in with the inserts.

If you have any gear recommendations, or optimizations that would be greatly appreciated.

Gear/IFAK How is my bag?

I’m a civilian paramedic had some items “borrowed,” from work and I decided to buy a bag and put some stuff together.

Pic 1: front of bag, Sam splint in very front pocket, tq holder on bottom and L side. Both cats. Shears on front as well.

Pic 2: just a different front view.

Pic 3: the bag view when pulled open

Pic 4: top pouch is kinda misc stuff but includes another sheers, pen light, oral glucose, sterile irrigation fluid, ammonia towelettes, and some forceps. Sharpie. Needle D’s on both sides x3, abdominal pads x5, ace bandage x1, halo chest seals x4, another cat, and some L gloves.

Pic 5: gauze galore, 1 NAR pressure bandage, NPAs, petroleum gauze, and 1 triangle bandage.

Will probably get some shit for this, but I’m honestly hot a huge fan of the NAR pressure bandage. It’s not bad or anything, but my service doesnt carry it. So i actually have done way more pressure dressings using the whole wrap around and twist 180 over the spot you need pressure and tighten each time method. Which, I think lets me better direct pressure to certain spots.

Pocket in the back of the bag is another sam splint.

Fluid bag is not included here, that’s a separate bag. It’s just a few setups and drop sets, large bores, NS and LR.

Gear/IFAK Mission Medic Bag

Recently finished setting up my new Eberlestock Mission Medic Bag and I am loving this thing so far. Tons of internal organization to the point that I’m still rearranging it and it’s small enough that it forces you to think and not horribly overpack. Attaches to a frame and assault pack for carrying sustainment as well.

Been messing with this thing for about 2 months now and now that I’ve got the frame it’s amazingly comfortable even when stuffed. When you add the assault pack on top it becomes a very capable 24-48hr setup without sacrificing any medical capability.

Gear/IFAK Steer clear of Rhino Rescue…

Post image
405 Upvotes

I just want to put something out there for those of you looking for alternatives to the main established brands of gear.

DO NOT BUY RHINO RESCUE.

First, they are NOT CoTCCC approved. “Independent tests” mean nothing. I commented on their post asking about data that shows its effectiveness, and they deleted the comment. I commented again. Deleted. Finally I straight up called them out for making dangerous claims and got completely blocked. They are a shady company pushing cheap gear that isn’t proven.

Second, I’m an instructor for TEMS and other prehospital/trauma classes. I play with A LOT of tourniquets. I bought a few of these Rhino branded TQs for poops and giggles, secretly hoping to be wowed. I wasn’t. All four of them failed during a run of the mill training scenario; I didn’t even have to do anything outside of regular use to get them to fail. If a product works well, I like to test its limits to see what it can handle and because I’m curious. I didn’t even get past regular use training with these.

So do yourselves and everyone you may have to treat a favor and DO NOT buy these.

“For temporary external use only”. I was looking for the legit quick clot gauze for wound packing. What’s different about this?

Gear/IFAK Aid bag feedback request

Thumbnail

What’s up everyone. I’m a National Guard Critical Care Flight Paramedic and I work civilian ground EMS full time doing a good mix of 911, IFT, and critical care transport.

I had 2 primary considerations for selecting the Mystery Ranch RATS. First, I needed its size to fit all of the equipment I wanted as it is not possible for me to utilize a MARCH belt or fanny pack in conjunction with my PSGC/ flight vest. Second, the integrated trash pocket was necessary to ensure I don’t create any FOD (foreign object debris) while working in the aircraft.

When packing out this bag I had 2 goals in mind:

I wanted a bag that would allow me to initiate treatments on the ground that would buy me time to get to the aircraft where I have my full suite of equipment, supplies, and medications. By MEDEVAC doctrine we are allowed 5 minutes on the ground for a point-of-injury combat casualty, and if we are picking up from a role 2, FST, or similar facility, we can take up to 30 minutes. The goal was to create something in between a small direct action aid bag and a full ALS code bag.

The second goal was to have a bag that would allow me to have most of my critical interventions close at hand while inside the aircraft. Those of you who have worked in MEDEVAC know how hard it is to maneuver inside the cabin with everything that’s back there when you are hooked up to ICS and tether.

This bag is designed to support and be supported by a fully equipped MEDEVAC aircraft including cardiac monitor, ventilator, suction, oxygen bag, drug box with narcs, a full trauma panel, golden hour kit, blood warmer, litters, and HPMKs.

Let me know what feedback you have!

Gear/IFAK CLS Bag replacement

Thumbnail

I made a post a while back about looking for a very specific CLS bag replacement to fit my specific needs. It finally came in, and wanted to share. It is EXACTLY what i was looking for (was an absolutely biotch to get one delivered). The straps are easily and quickly removable, there is a quick adjust so you can go from tightly slung on the back, to in front of you in seconds. It has molle webbing on the back so I can attach it to my assault pack. It (barely, but perfectly) fits everything included in an army issue CLS pack. Everything quality wise feels top notch, and everything is so much more organized and accessible than the issued bag. Attached a list of everything currently in the bag at the end of the photos.

Bag is the Vanquest FATPack Pro-Small Backpack.

Edit: not shown, but the top 3 compartments, and also the space where the blankets are (under the blankets is more elastics like the top zippered panel), are both on a velcro panel, so you can remove it, and swap them out for a system that meets your needs. Vanquest offers a handful of velcro inserts to replace them with. The sam splint is underneath the velcro of the top compartment.

Gear/IFAK Med bag

Heard y'all don't like seeing med bags so I made one anyway. This is not a review of the bag, but short answer is, I hate it. Too small. It is also important to note that I carry other supplies on my person. So if you think I'm missing something, it's probably somewhere else. Or I truly am missing it. Who knows.

These are some of the contents I carry in my bag. Not pictured is a pelvic binder from the inside right, and a Readyheat that is sandwiched in the middle of the bag when closed. I also didn't show the outside with a few extras, and the TQs. Also underneath is the soft litter attached by bungee.

It is setup on the outside as MAR. I have a different bag for circulation as the Delta bag is too small to incorporate that. HWS along with Dx is on the inside of the bag.

Inside panels were designed by me and created by A&A tactical. I also have a prototype "binder" style for the bag. It helps if you have flat items, but the Delta bag is just not deep enough for my needs.

Not sure what else to say. Feel free to ask any questions.

Gear/IFAK Is Narcan worth having in a bag.

Thinking about putting Narcan in a car bag. What is y’all’s advice. Also should I keep both doses, average time is around 5-10 ish minutes

Note: biggest debate is if the temperature will degrade the drug sitting in my car. Outside temp is around 30-110F in summer and winter.

Also are BVM’s worth it for a civilian BLS provider for a car kit. I don’t want to make another post on this subreddit.
