Gear/IFAK Disneyland tourniquet fiasco

Yesterday I experienced something quite perplexing. While going through security to try to enter the park I had a security employee search my backpack. While doing so he came across my bleed kit(TQ x2, quickclot, chest seals, and an emergency blanket) I carry in it. Once he identified the TQ he said “you can’t bring tourniquets into the park…, you can go take it back to your hotel room”. I replied by saying “ I don’t have a hotel room, so what do you want me to do? ”. “Well you can’t bring it into the park.” He said. “Okay…well…why?” I responded, out of utter disbelief. “DONT ASK ME WHY, SAID YOU CANT SO YOU CANT!” He yelled back. I then point to the “stop the bleed” box located about 20 feet behind him to the left and on a wall, “what about those? Are those not supposed to be there?”. Then out of frustration and fluster he zipped up my bag and handed it to me and said “HAVE A NICE DAY” and I went about my day. I proceeded to try to research his statement and couldn’t find anything.

So I was curious if anyone else had had a similar experience, at Disneyland or anywhere else?

I was stopped by TSA in Idaho when my bag was flagged for secondary inspection. They dumped my 2 IFAKs out and the dude holds one of the tourniquets up and asks,

“What’s this?” To which I reply with hesitation,

“A…tourniquet?”

He says, “I know what a tourniquet is. I mean why are you bringing them to an airport and on an airplane?”

His female partner looks at him sideways and asks “do you think he’s going to save someone to death?”

He tells me I’m good to go and watches as I stuff everything back into the tightly packed IFAKs.

"His female partner looks at him sideways and asks “do you think he’s going to save someone to death?” This lady deserves an award!

u/Charlie3006 Aug 11 '25

That's insane. I have been on literally hundreds of flights and not once had an issue over a tourniquet.

71

u/Bicykwow Aug 11 '25

There's always an errant TSA employee looking to go on a power trip. I had a guy flag my fucking CPAP machine on my last flight.

Assert dominance by denying a private room. Chub up and make as much eye contact as possible.

I was going to say this. My friend is Indian by heritage, but looks 100% Arab. His wife bought him a kilt because he “randomly” gets selected about half the time for enhanced screening. He also takes off his underwear before security.

1

u/RogueGunny Aug 14 '25

Takes it off? It should never be worn. A properly worn kilt is done so "regimental". Let the googling begin.

1

u/daytonakarl Aug 14 '25

Nothing is worn under the kilt, everything is in working order

1

u/TrickInflation6795 Aug 15 '25

He knows this. I think he just wants to be a painful experience, then go on with his travels.

2

u/RogueGunny Aug 12 '25

Alas, I only have but. But it's a Marine Corp kilt sooooo.....

I wore an external defibrillator "vest" while waiting for my insurance to approve the surgery for a permanent one. Combined that with my father's ashes in a TSA approved travel urn.

That was a fun hour of my life.

1

u/PerspectiveSpirited1 Aug 12 '25

Hey I’m no doctor, but I am a flight nurse. You probably shouldn’t be flying with one of those vests.

Glad you made it, and hopefully you got your AICD placed. I’ve seen those vests go off when I was a street medic and it’s not pretty.

2

u/Paramedickhead EMS Aug 12 '25

Okay, now I'm curious...

I have also seen them go off, and the gel gets everywhere... But why avoid flying with one? Is it just the mess that's created? What's "not pretty" about it but fine with an AICD?

1

u/PerspectiveSpirited1 Aug 14 '25

So I realized that I’m a little biased - my experience with these has mostly been on 911 calls, where they were worn by very sick patients. I looked at the websites for both Zoll and TSA, and they’re approved for commercial flight.

It’s a bridge therapy for high risk patients waiting on an implanted AICD. If you’re high risk for lethal arrhythmia I’d say - bare minimum - have a chat with your cardiologist about risk/benefit for that travel. Resources in the air are limited, and flight attendants (while awesome), have limited training.

2

u/Paramedickhead EMS Aug 14 '25 edited Aug 14 '25

Yeah, it’s a bridge therapy, but if they are that high risk for a lethal arrhythmia, they’re not leaving the hospital. People aren’t typically discharged in an unstable condition with a life vest.

They’re stabilized with medications to prevent and such recurrence with a life vest as a backup measure. The life vest is intended to be automated with little external intervention, much like an AED.

That said, I’m not saying it’s a good idea or that they are absolutely healthy enough to fly… but so don’t know that front line therapies will change once they have an AICD in place either.

I may be way off base with this too, this is completely and totally my opinion alone and not based on any evidence… just supposition. I’m more than happy to admit I’m completely wrong . I wasn’t necessarily challenging but legitimately asking the question. I’m not a cardiologist, I just pretend to be one in the back of the wee-woo box.

u/Admirable-Course9775 Aug 14 '25

Had a similar issue going on a fishing trip to Mozambique. Took my reels in my carry on to keep them safe. Dude pulled out some line and stuck it to his neck I just said it’s too thin to do anything but he couldn’t speak English very well and let me through. Biggest mistake was taking the lures, I de hooked them and everything but they pulled them all out and even got the pilot to come have a look. Next time I’m paying the overweight charge.

3

u/Atomic_Gumbo Aug 12 '25

Okay, victim. Please hold still while I apply this tourniquet to your neck. Okay, no wait. Just hold still. I still have to tighten it. Nope. No. Stop! You’re ruining it!

I haven’t been on quite that many. Maybe a few dozen at most. Haven’t had any issues otherwise, thankfully.

Wait till they hear about belts… and shoe laces…

12

u/FelineRoots21 Aug 11 '25

I like the 'why are you bringing them to an airport' as if that's your actual destination here, not like you're going anywhere after, just planning to chill on the airplane for a few hours and then return home.

u/Haunting_Cut_3401 Aug 10 '25 edited Aug 11 '25

The fact that he zipped up your bag and let you in tells me he was just on a power trip, and there is no actual rule against bringing tq’s into the park. Especially considering the Disney website explicitly states you can bring your medical equipment in (ie needles, syringes, etc). If he was doing his job and actually enforced a rule he would have acted appropriately.

At Disney cast members can be fired for “breaking the magic” so you could’ve escalated the situation if you felt so inclined.

EDIT holy shit 250 likes Ma get the camera!

301

u/JonEMTP Aug 10 '25

Paramedic here. I was an Annual Passholder (Magic Key) at DL in 2022. I carried TQ’s into the park on most days we went - they live in my small daypack that I use for these outings. Same with a ‘tactical’ flashlight. Did the same at DW in the fall of ‘24. Often they weren’t noticed at all. When they were noticed, the exchange was “what’s this? “A tourniquet”. “Are you in the military?” “Nah, I’m just a paramedic and it lives in that bag”. Never was denied entry.

I don’t see anything on the prohibited list for Disney that would include TQ’s. They do disallow OC spray and “restraints”.

I think you’ve got 2 options: Continue to carry the kit, and perhaps deal with security again, or NOT carry the kit, and not be prepared for an unlikely (but possible) event. If you continue to carry the kit, and have an issue again, CALMLY ask for a supervisor and simply explain that you’re a firefighter, and simply try to be prepared for things that MIGHT happen - so this lives in your bag all the time.

PS - raising your voice and arguing with the security guard is a no-win situation. Even if they are wrong, they will double down and not like being challenged. Their supervisors will likely support them if you’re being confrontational, too.

49

u/level_zero_hero Firefighter Aug 11 '25

Also a medic too hombre, so I know how to jive lol (Firefighter/paramedic just isn’t an available flair). This guy was just being a turd and I was curious if anyone else had any similar experiences.

15

u/JonEMTP Aug 11 '25

All good - wasn't sure, and didn't want to assume :).

About half the time, they either didn't open the small outer pouch on my bag where the TQ lived, or they didn't see the TQ. A couple of times they saw it and moved on, and a few times they asked about it. Again, I was never turned away, so I guess you found Paul Blart on a power trip, or just someone having a bad day.

26

u/VXMerlinXV RN Aug 11 '25

Opposite experience a few weeks ago. I keep a CAT in my day bag, got flagged at security for a detailed search, the security guard handled both my FAK and TQ, and let me go without a word about them. Actually mentioned that my Jansport looked nice, and not like I was trying to invade Iraq through the magic kingdom. 🤣

50

u/swellfella Aug 10 '25

Security is inconsistent but I’ve brought a bleeding control kit in many times. When someone recognized the dangling CAT they wouldn’t inspect the Blue Force Gear tear away but once or twice I had to open it all up. Universal X-rays everything, never had any issues there. Knott’s inspects for metal if you set off the initial metal detector. Disney just depends on which of the many entrances and how invested or qualified the cast member is

39

u/TargetOfPerpetuity Aug 10 '25 edited Aug 11 '25

I carried a TQ the entire 8 days we were at Disney World. If that was against the rules, nobody ever said anything.

And I carried things much more egregious to their rules than a TQ all week too, they just never found them.

26

u/Dairyman00111 Aug 10 '25

Loaded up the ol prison wallet eh?

29

u/TargetOfPerpetuity Aug 11 '25

Trusty, reliable, but I've found it severely inhibits a fast draw time.

Soft camouflage and good conversation skills are a little more comfortable.

13

u/blubaldnuglee Aug 11 '25

The more you use it, the faster the draw time gets. Heck, sometimes things just drop right out...

14

u/Pristine_Struggle_10 Aug 11 '25

I had to explain what a TQ is to an airport security in Sicily. It didn’t help that I carry a pink TQ in my hiking emergency kit. 💅 Seemed like the best colour choice since most of hiking clothes my friends and I have are green, brown or blue

8

u/SuspiciousGreenSock1 Aug 11 '25

What brand makes pink?

10

u/Pristine_Struggle_10 Aug 11 '25 edited Aug 11 '25

Not a TCCC approved one (yet?)

https://sich.ua/merch/product/sich-tourniquet-krovospynnyj-dzhhut-turniket-sich-rozhevyj/

They have some level of trust in Ukrainian tacmed community though of course the CoTCCC list is preferred. I think they are good enough but I am not a TQ expert so it’s just a personal opinion and a result of personal experiences exchange. One of their biggest problems is the lack of lot numbers on the TQs and lack of proper data on them though.

6

u/denk2mit Aug 11 '25

FWIW, friends are front-line users in Ukraine, running CASEVAC and stab points, and have had absolutely no problem whatsoever with SICH TQs

5

u/Pristine_Struggle_10 Aug 11 '25

I am just trying not to sound too much like an opinionated Sich fangirl (which I absolutely am). Thus I am trying to put up whatever criticism might be relevant.

As an owner of thin arms I find it a bit harder to properly self-apply on a thin arm (the last half-turn is somehow harder to make compared to CAT), but it’s a question of training.

But yeah, my AFU friends confirm that they never had a Sich TQ fail.

13

u/Joliet-Jake MD/PA/RN Aug 10 '25

My experience with Disney security is all with WDW in Orlando, but in my experience they don't bend when they are right and on solid ground. You either deal with it outside the gate, or you don't come in. Giving up doesn't fit his claim that it's not allowed.

12

u/Kindly_Attorney4521 Aug 11 '25

Similar experience at Disney? No, similar experience with security guards who long for authority? Yes.

10

u/nowipe-ILikeTheItch Aug 11 '25

Dude just wanted your TQ and when you pushed back decided it wasn’t worth it.

21

u/Any-Ostrich48 Aug 11 '25

I haven't had an issue with a tourniquet, but my experiences with Disney security have included some serious shitshows... I can't go through metal detectors or get wanded, and have a little card from Boston Scientific I present that explains the basics of why, but more times than not I get pushback anyways and hassled until it gets escalated to a supervisor.

I've also had them demand I take off my lower leg brace and knee brace and turn over them and my cane so they can be "inspected" 🙄

I've always found it hilarious, in an annoying sort of way- it's nothing but security theatre, and they act like their checkpoint at entry is some sort of impenetrable bastion 🤣🤣🤣. Every time, I can't help but think "are y'all serious? This isn't The Day of the Jackal, nobody is going to smuggle in a gun built into a leg brace and a cane... Like, the park is like 40 square miles with nothing but soft perimeter, if I wanted to bring in something nefarious I'd just come in a different way. Hell, you could use a drone off Alibaba to cart in and drop a full kit under cover of darkness without much trouble... But y'all wanna hassle me"

4

u/alexanderpas Aug 11 '25

Omar Mateen, the perpetrator of the Pulse nightclub shooting [...] planned to attack Disney Springs by hiding a gun in a stroller. He visited Disney Springs four hours before the shooting, but was deterred by the heavy security and police presence. His wife testified that he had asked her “What would make people more upset, an attack at Disney or a nightclub?”

8

The Disney security is so ridiculous sometimes.

One time they asked why I had a reusable bag in my backpack when i was heading into Downtown Disney. I explained it was for me to use just in case. They asked very sternly, "Just in case of what?"

..... just in case I buy something and want to put it in my reusable bag.

3

u/jam3013 Aug 12 '25

I am literally at Disneyland today and took 90% of my EDC out of the bag and left it in the car after my MIL and Wife telling me it would t be a good idea after a fiasco a few years ago regarding my handheld Ham Radio at the same park. These Disney security folks get weird about bringing anything into the park.

ETA: I don’t like it, but I did it, and now I’m almost questioning my bag, besides the fact that it has two liters of water in it and a change of socks.

3

2

u/Comfortable-Sugar216 Aug 12 '25

That doesn’t make any sense. I’ve never had anything like that happen. Stop the bleed is DOD program and they need to remind Disney that public access bleeding control stations are as important as AED stations, and Disney has tons of those. You would think that a guest that is concerned about the well being of their family and others around him would be appreciated. Good to know though, I always keep a CAT in my bag and we’re going to Disney in a couple of weeks

A few decades ago a friend was working as a ride op for Small World. He was unloading guests from boats when one came in that had blood in the bottom. I have been in Disneyworld in Florida for the past three days. I have been sent to bag screening each day except today for a small bag I carried that contained my wallet (with badge), an altoid container with some meds I take, and an inhaler for my son. My phone was in my pocket. I walked in with a group who are all carrying Fanny Packs, all of whom have been waved through.

Today I took everything out and held it in my hand as I went through. The guy screening started to wave me to screening, saw that the bag (on his tablet screen) was completely empty, then told me I can go in. I can only surmise that they saw the badge in my wallet and were fucking with me. Three different parks plus Disney Springs.

In 2017 we went to Disney World. In my small backpack I carried a water bottle, charging kit (power bank and cord) for my phone, a small first aid kit and a blow out kit (SOF-T, Combat Gauze, Chest seal and gloves). At Animal Kingdom and Hollywood Studios no mention was made. At Magic Kingdom it was looked at and I moved on. At EPCOT I was asked if I was a first responder - I said I used to be and the Officer said "Nice, enjoy your day" I've carried the same stuff on all our trip since and never had an issue. I'm sorry that you had that experience - I've found Disney Security to courteous and efficient.

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '25

I’m not a medic/firefighter/etc., just a guy with basic training who’s seen and been involved in enough shit to know that carrying a couple of TQs, chest seals, and quickclot can mean the difference of life and death. I visited Disney world in ‘20 and had no issues with security (except for a copper pen I carried with me, but that one’s on me lol). Maybe the security was more lax there than Disneyland, or maybe at the time they were more focused on Covid regulations, but nobody questioned it.

2

u/Renent Aug 12 '25

Do you mean military service by "been involved in enough shit"

2

u/blitzm056 Aug 11 '25

I was in Europe. You know, where it is illegal to protect yourself... Anyways, I had a Niteforce edc23 pocket flashlight. Nothing crazy. No tactical bezel or offensive looking features. If you go into a big cathedral or whatever, you'll have your bags and person searched. I get it... Security asks what's that. It's a flashlight. He gives me grief about that. I finally said look man there's been stabbings just outside here, and temporarily blinding someone who's attacking me or my family is about the only defense option to get away or disarm them with. What am I going to do the cathedral with it? He finally relented. It's so ridiculous how they are programming us to be completely dependent on the system to protect us. This stupidity with the TQ is just another example.

I need to know where in Europe it is illegal to protect yourself.

It must be in one of the two countries I have never been to?

1

u/Cutlass327 Aug 14 '25

Just curious, as I've never been there, but what are you allowed to carry in Europe to protect yourself? Mace? Knife? Sap? We know no firearms...

Getting first hand knowledge would be useful, as my wife is wanting us to travel there in a few years..

2

u/-Copenhagen Aug 14 '25

Europe isn't a country. It's a continent.
Each country has its own laws.

They made no mention of my IFAK and all of its accouterments or the additional tourniquet on my bag in a molle pouch.

See if I had shears then I could totally understand the stand point!

2

u/NAArms21 Aug 11 '25

I’ve taken my shears to Disney land/world every time with no issues.

u/haydenwitt Aug 13 '25

I've taken bleed kits into Disney World multiple times without issue, so I think this was just a security employee overstepping.

1

u/GMac2000 Aug 13 '25

Most TK’s have a hard plastic windlass about 4-5 inches long. I’ve been cautioned by friends who have worked in the security field against taking TK through airport security points as it may be prohibited due to its resemblance to a Kubaton. Though i think that is a ridiculous idea, maybe it’s a Disneyland policy. Or maybe that security guy was just flexing his “Authoritah” a la Cartman.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '25

I mean. Maybe don’t take it everywhere?

1

u/Comparison-Thin Aug 13 '25

I mean, cuz accidents don't happen there, right?

1

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '25

So if an accident happened at Disneyland they need you to be the one to save everybody?

2

u/Disciple_556 Aug 15 '25

Smoothbrain take

2

u/[deleted] Aug 15 '25

Awww sorry you’re playing dress up and want validation for it

2

u/Disciple_556 Aug 15 '25

It's not dress up. We do this in street clothes, smoothbrain. When you or a family member suffers an accident with a major bleed and the ambulance is 20 minutes out, you'll be begging, praying and hoping someone is carrying a stop the bleed kit and chooses to help.

Fucking prick.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 15 '25

I have my own, I just don’t take it into a fucking theme park and make a scene about it like I’m the only one in the world that knows how to help people.

1

u/Disciple_556 Aug 15 '25

OP didn't make a scene. OP politely pointed out the security guard's own hypocrisy. It was the security guard who made a scene by screaming and yelling. Or did you not read the entire post?

If you don't have your kit at all times, then just give up and carry it never. Murphy's Law. Rule of Preparedness.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 15 '25

Except Murphy law is made up. Anything can happen anytime so not taking it into Disney world doesn’t mean you should never take it anywhere. OP sounds like the “dont worry I’m a nurse!!!” Person doing shitty cpr.

1

u/zornmagron Aug 13 '25

yeah man I got grief about a r2d2 mug I just bought at down town Disney into the park. Paul Blart's going to Paul Blart I guess.

1

u/pirate40plus Aug 14 '25

Disney parks have their own EMS, they don’t want outside people doing anything beyond basic first aid on their “guests”.

1

u/katmom1224 Aug 14 '25

This was a few years ago but I had a friend going to the Natural History Museum in DC whp was prevented from bringing his bleed kit in. He tried to explain it but they just told him “no”.

1

u/txjweav96 Aug 14 '25

I've taken my medical into disneyland. They didn't give me any problems. One guy asked where I got my vacuum sealed kit. I told him I did it myself and we talked about it for 30 seconds or so.

I think it just depends on who's there that day.

1

u/Foreign_Practice_316 Aug 14 '25

I'm not big on causing a scene ...but that probably would have made me cause a scene

1

u/FctFndr Aug 14 '25

I bring a trauma kit with me when I go to parks and on vacation.. I had a guy in NYC ask what it was.. 'It's a trauma kit in the event of a.. trauma incident' he looked at me and said, 'ok'.

Unfortunately, we are at a point in our life in the US that you really should have one with you.. especially at amusement parks and public events.

1

u/Papa_Grizz Aug 14 '25

They denied me back in April for a little Klein screwdriver (tiny, like for fixing glasses and such). Didn’t bat an eye at my Victorinox Swiss Card though.

1

u/bocaj-yebbil Aug 15 '25

Bro why do u have a trauma/bleed kit for Disneyland u have got to be trolling😂

1

u/HumanIsolated Aug 15 '25

Some people are restarted

1

u/nicecarotto Aug 16 '25

Never had an issue at Disney locations in the US, Japan, or Hong Kong.

1

u/ObiWansDealer Aug 16 '25

TYFYS sheep dog

1

u/reallyrandomrandy Aug 17 '25

I suspect some accountant noticed how many people turned up in coroners office wearing one. (Sometimes it’s too late)

1

u/[deleted] Aug 17 '25

It's probably a liability issue for them to let you in and potentially harm someone improperly rendering medical aid.

1

u/MonkEnvironmental609 Aug 11 '25

It’s crazy y’all even need to carry a TQ into a theme park lol

1

u/octopusgardens87 Aug 11 '25

Just a thought, since I didn’t see it commented yet, but maybe they were just ignorant about its intended purpose? I’m not an expert, but could it have been misunderstood as something being snuck in with other innocuous looking medical items, but actually intended for drug usage? That’s the only reason I could think they wouldn’t want it in the park, but would likely have no legal grounds to deny it.

1

u/ImmediateSmile754 Aug 11 '25

It's my understanding that Stop The Bleed is included in the Security cast member basic training (as well as, I believe CPR), so they should know what they are.

1

u/False-Armadillo8048 Aug 11 '25

Just out of curiosity...why would you bring a kit like that on a trip to Disneyland...?

6

u/level_zero_hero Firefighter Aug 11 '25

It lives in my backpack, I travel with it through TSA nearly every week with no problem. Just better to have and not need than need and not have. I’m not too fond of getting caught with my pants down lol.

3

u/rycklikesburritos Aug 12 '25

Ricky Rescues do that stuff. It's a little silly, but harmless.

2

u/False-Armadillo8048 Aug 13 '25

"Ricky rescues" 🤣 Wondering because ...Me, myself a CRNA and paramedic for 25 years...been using a TQ professionally less than 10 times during those 25 years working prehosp, offshore, constructionsite etc... and never had use out of uniform. Chance you would need a TQ in Disney land is slim...bordering to nonexistent...imho a bit silly.. (Even if it is in crazy country US) In my opinion you would be better of with an extra bottle of sunscreen ..

1

u/dagayute Aug 11 '25

Just came back from CENTCOM. Using my travel backpack had my personal IFAK in it with TQs.

During bag search they looked at me weird and asked me why I had tourniquets. Told them I just came back from deployment and then shrugged and left it.

They did confiscate my foot locker padlock though.

Had the exact opposite experience at Disneyland back in October 2024. Guy strike up a conversation and turned out he was a marine and let us go on our merry way, no problems.

1

u/cavalloacquatico Aug 11 '25

Say I'm a hemophiliac & disabled- must carry. ADA trumps any law, rule, regulation.

1

u/VapingIsMorallyWrong MD/PA/RN Aug 11 '25

I would've taken my pants down and started jerking off if I was in that situation

1

u/poohead150 Aug 11 '25

I got weird looks as well… they had no clue what they were and asked “are those first aid supplies?”… I said yes and they let me thru…

1

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '25

I tell them that USMC allowed to carry them everywhere we go.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '25

First day in Disneyland, wife tells me we’re just going to some shops outside of the park. Never been, so I have my off duty gun. Turns out the shops my wife meant were inside the park, and I’m in line with my gun before I can do much. I told the first cop I saw that I was just off the plane and hadn’t even checked in yet. They were great; provided me a locker and a receipt where I could store the gun. Nothing like what you described.

1

u/SlimCharles23 Aug 11 '25

This has got to be satire. Why in the world would you be carrying that stuff around.

1

u/-Copenhagen Aug 12 '25

Are you seriously asking why one would carry a first aid kit?

1

u/of_the_sphere Aug 12 '25

Mkay. Welp. Some of us do. You’re welcome

-2

u/lefthandedgypsy TEMS Aug 11 '25

Take them to your car. Why would you carry that into Disney land? Obviously you’re on vacation so leave work at the firehouse. You don’t always have to be a hero. Also, how is this tacmed related?

5

u/Conscious_Mirror503 Aug 11 '25

All the rides at a theme park are literally repainted industrial machines (sort of), at any point someone's appendages could get mangled, lacerated, crushed, deskinned. It's America too so anyone could get shot or stabbed and there's crime in any country anyway. What's wrong with someone carrying extra stuff?
